A fan friendly company would find a way to promote projects like this or the Chrono Cross remake as well as protecting their IP. Of course, Square isn't fan friendly, though we all knew that after FF8, so it's a moot point.

But you notice that, say, Valve or Id have a much more friendly policy towards modders. Or Raven, they've officially allowed a Doom3 total conversion remake of Hexen.

The Chrono Trigger thing was not a mod. It was a recreation of a game Square had made, and was still selling (in FF Chronicles). You can't compare what they were doing to a mod.
Valve gives people the software to design mods; Square does not give their characters to everyone to recreate the games.

They're both fan works. They're perfectly comparible in that.
And Valve gives the tools, but also actively supports fan made works. They distribute Counterstrike and Day of Defeat themselves. If Square would have had the sense to be a similarly progressive they might have ended up with a nice featurette for the next CT re-release/collection's bonus disc. Instead they just got bad press out of it.

I hate it when development of mods are stopped by companies. It happened to the Middle Earth Morrowind Mod, and I was looking forward to that. (http://www.memod.co.uk/)

I think the fact that neither has shut down any M.U.G.E.N website in all of it's history is enough evidence to support that statement.
And I agree that Square should allow the mod. It's more like a free advertisement rather than something that will hinder their game sales.

Well SNK I agree with, but Capcom gave up on the 2-D fighting games years ago. Capcom cares only for money.

Not jsut that, but Valve has said they will actively support any modders who want to make a true Source powered version of Half Life 1, and will let them re-do the entire original game in the new engine.
