View Full Version : just bought an xbox hdtv pack need help

so i just bought the hdtv pack and plugged it in the back of my tv. i then went into the xbox settings to adjust the HD settings. the first few games i played looked great, then i popped fable in and the picture is all scrambled. i then threw in another game to see if the problem was the game or not. and it seems that i am only having problems with fable. all the games i have the support HD all support it at 480p so i don't know why i have problems with fable. any insight?

First....
Do you have an HDTV?
Did you use Component cables?
Did you enable 720P inthe dashboard and does your TV support it? It is does not, turn it off)

Also, Fable has a bug where the game will sometimes play in progressive scan and sometimes it won't. They talk about it in the penny-arcade review of the game. They didn't mention the picture being all scrambled though. I think you must have a setting enabled that the tv doesn't support, like doubledown said.

I'm sure you could....not sure what difference it would make though. Maybe a little, but it won't be HD.

Wouldn't he have to disable the various resolutions in the menu GUI for xbox. Since it is not a "High Definition TV", I do not think it could run the different resolutions. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, it's just to use the componant cables. he would have to disable all the resolutions

Makes a big difference. The picture is clearer, brighter, and the colors are sharper and more vivid. You'd be amazed at the difference, even though it still doesn't compare to true HDTV.

Fable is going to be random and put 480p throught the cable and your tv cant handle it you have no recourse other than play with svideo

so is it just plug in and play, or will i have to change some stuff like people above were mentioning? since i am just using it for component, if figured there would i wouldn't have to change anything in the dashboard.

i'm sure it will, but a cheap ass like me can't afford an HDTV right now. after i get out of graduate school in about 6 years i will definitely be grabbing one.

Same here with Men of Valor. My tv supports all three 480p 720p and 1080i. Plugged in my HD pak from xbox straight into tv. I turned off 480p and it worked just fine. Anybody else have a problem with Men of Valor in 480p?

I concur. My TV (not HD) has component inputs and s-video inputs. I've tried both connections and the component input definitely boasts a more better, and clearer picture (although, just barely noticeable). And since HDTV is becoming the standard in TV viewing, there's no loss in investing in component cables as oppose to s-video cables.

I'm dissapointed in the HDTV support of most games. While many do 480i, few do 720i and only 7 games in all do 1080i.
One of those 7 is Atari Anthology! C'mon, a 4-bit game has the highest HD signal, but games that you would hope to be HD aren't.

I just purchased a HDTV today that supports 480,720,1080. Does the HDTV pack support optical audio out? I use the advanced AV pack now, but I'm going to go buy the HD pack if it supports optical. I'm guessing I'll also need component cables too correct? I have a generic set of component cables hooked up to the box for the time being. Will the games look a lot more noticable with the HDTV box? Anyone?

Crap, its no different than DVD movies... they're not really made for 1080i at all. Thank the DVD Gods HD DVDs should start hitting shelves soon, just sucks theat there may be multiple formats. The closes thing we have now is the super-bit DVDs with less compression (and no extras) that does look much better on a HD TV.
I'd give games until next year before really taking advantage of HD.

Yes, the HD Pack has both Optical Digital Audio & RCA Stereo output and it only has Component Video output (no S-Video output). You will need Component Video cables, the generic set you have now will work fine. The games will definitely look better, just remember to turn on the HD options in the Xbox Video menu.

I bought the HD pack from EB today. It already has component cables built in, and looks different than the one MS shows on the Xbox website. This one is a MS product and was $19.99. Are there any differences in the two that anyone is aware of?

They redesigned it recently, but the functionality should be exactly the same.
To the OP, try disabling 480p, 720p, and 1080i in the dashboard and see if you still get the scrambling in Fable. Your TV may not support progressive scan.

it definitely supports all formats. everything else running at 480p is perfectly fine, it's just fable that's the problem.

There is a very simple trick to making fable work each and every time (worked for me)
Turn on the xbox without a disc in it. Boot up to the Dashboard. Then but the disc in, play as usual. Worked for me each and every time.
Oh yeah, and as was stated earlier, make sure only the first Pro scan 480 is ON. Mine is usally that way anyway so i didnt think of it.
