(Please no flaming)
My cousin modded his Xbox and was showing it off to me. He had tons of SNES, Genesis, and MAME. It was cool and all and it didn't bother me until I saw that he also had at least a dozen or so Xbox games burned on his Xbox hard drive as well. I asked him about where he got these games from and he told me he bought these games from EBgames, burned them and then returned them. I am a real cheap when it comes to buying games, but I don't think I would ever stoop so low as to burn current generation games instead of buying them. I feel that it is really wrong to do this. I will eventually mod my Xbox, but only to be able to run Linux on it and to play SNES roms.

So my question is, where do you stand on the issue of playing backup Xbox games on a modded Xbox?

Emulation of older systems is A-Ok with me. However current gen is a no-no

that makes me feel dirty. i mod systems for ease of use, carrying around 100 dvds for my ps2 and xbox, plus all the snes carts and various other games i own with me would just blow. modding for legal purposes is a great thing.

I'm pretty much the same way basically cause its very difficult to show the publishers are losing money on emulating older systems, IMO.

I don't really have a problem with people emulating older games... unless the people making the games have made them available by some other method. They are the people who made the games, and they deserve to be paid for that.

Piracy is a terrible thing, but so is art being lost to time because no one moved quick enough to try to preserve it.
It's a shame how much source code has just been destroyed, and how some of the last functioning copies of games are just sitting there decomposing... and as soon as those copies die, the game vanishes.
It's really a pity there is no group actively trying to preserve the games of the past, like people do with paintings and literature.
I wish that some of the companies could get past thier overprotective nature of thier IP and at least allow people to archive and make available some of the older games, just like people have done with books, painting and recordings for years.

Does anyone here have a modded Xbox? I got a second Xbox, and I think I will mod it and turn it into an arcade.

That's pretty cool. With the surge of great fighters that have hit/are hitting the Xbox, that could definitely be fun.

Right, but I will mod it and put a few Arcade classics in it. I was thinking about doing this with a PC instead, but doing it with an Xbox seems more efficient.

I'd rethink that... most places will sell old arcade cabinets complete with functioning control rather cheaply... just take an old PC that still has enough power to run the most powerful thing you think you'll be running, and then do a quicky solder job on an old keyboard and boom, done.
Usually rather cheaply.

I'd rather just have to deal with an average pc that have to putz around with an Xbox.

I wouldnt ever mod my games system, Not that I care if anyone else does. I would rather have complete original games. that my opinion.

If the complete original game is from another region, you'd need to mod your system to play it.

Yeah, but I have 2 problems with that. 1 is that the most powerful computer that I am not using is a 300 MHZ PII compuet with a 4GB hard drive. And the second thing is that I would like to play games SF aniversary collection online with it (it is the main reason why I am doing this). Also MK:Deception seems to be another game that should be fun using the arcade set up.

Not going to work nearly as well as you think. If you built a standup and wanted to play Xbox games on live, you would have to have it be an unmodded Xbox. That means no MAME, and pretty much kills any reason for going through the trouble.

So you'd rather see 20 year old games disappear because no one is doing anything with them, the source code has long since been purged from the corporate systems, and the last few working copies of the title are about to die... and only because someone still holds copyright?

Piracy of new software, or something someone is still selling is wrong...
I'll agree with that.

But to let art disappear just seems wrong.

I don't think anyone could come up with a good argument that it is somehow not immoral to continue to use something after returning the item for a refund. Once compensation is accepted, either in the form of a refund, or from the sale of the item to another person, all rights to use said item are forfeit.

Well, it would have a swith on it that would deactivate the mod chip when I want it to, that means I could play on Live (I don't have Live yet so I am really not sure). I have heard though that Microsoft has been cracking down by trying to find unusually large hard drives.

I have no problem with people Modding their consoles and putting games they own on them. But If you don't own them you shouldn't have them on the HD.

I personally have Modded my Xbox so I could have XMC on it and play imports. And as of lately I have been copying all my Games on to it so I can access them alot faster and not have to change discs or worry about disc problems. also it cuts down on load times.

As long as you own the game legally then I see nothing wrong with it.

Wow, talk about splitting hairs. Good versus great. I know there's a difference, but when I saw you put up those rankings it felt like you were supporting the original comment that there has been a surge of great fighting games on the Xbox. I really don't see too many glaring holes in the Xbox fighting game library. What is Xbox missing? Virtua Fighter? Smash brothers? Tekken?

Both the Xbox and the GameCube lack great fighting games in comparison to the PS2. The Xbox though does have a few good ones though that should keep most happy.

You can play on XBOX LIVE witha modded box IF you have a toggle switch to deactivate the mod chip before connecting to the network.

Beware of HALO 2 if have upgraded your HD and if you play on LIVE. They put something in the software that searches your HD to verify that it is factory stock. If its not, you are screwed. Best thing to do is keep a cheapass xbox for LIVE play...especially on new games, and use your modded box for your other gaming activities.

I got a Xbox with a Thompson drive for cheap from one of my classmates ($20 + Skies of Arcadia (GCN) mint (I got it for $5 at CC)). I wanted to use that for my "project."

I do not believe in any modding that will be used for piracy. Anything that hurts the video game industry is bad for gamers in the long run, even with the effects only hitting us later.

I know how hard video game developers work to make a product and I think they deserve the money because they often are underpaid for the massive amount of work and long hours.

Without our purchases to support their industry, watch the prices climb until all that is left is a few big studios, mainly EA.

That being said, I firmly believe in modding for playing other region games and for performance upgrades. Region encoding is BS (we all know it).

I upgraded the ATA cable in my Xbox and now my games load 30% faster. Sweet.

Well, I personally think it's a "neat" idea....although, I have NOT done it. It is pirating the games.

I thought about doing it at one point, since my old XBOX was giving me DDE, but I passed...didn't want to take the time and effort to do it. Plus, I usually buy only LIVE games lately....

It's funny this should get mentioned. I'm going to be buying an XBox (hopefully soon), and I'm trying to decide if I should get mine modded. I'm leaning heavly toward doing it. I just don't have any idea how much that will cost me. And who can you trust to do something like that?

There are some sites online that you can send your box to, they mod it and ship it back....all for a fee of course. Don't know how much, but their work is usually top notch.

Some places sell modded boxes online, but I am a little unsure of the legality. They may leave out a key piece (flashed BIOS?) to make it all nice and legal. Otherwise do it yourself via http://www.xbox-scene.com
