This could get entertaining . Even if it was the 1st game you chose [e.g. when you were younger and do not have a job , etc.] . Just list name of game and include the system , or computer it was for . :P Mine's , Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back , for 2600 . http://www.atariage.com/2600/carts/c_StarWarsEmpireStrikesBack_end.jpg

It's a tossup between Pacman for Atari, or some crappy RPG from Sierra Online in '82 or so when I got my first computer at 4.

EDIT:

Thinking about it a bit more, it was definately Pacman and some other Atari games. My parents bought me the computer when I took apart the Atari to see how it worked.

If it's the first game that I bought with money I earned myself, it'll be Zelda. Did chores at my grandfather's for quite awhile for that, though he'd paid generously.

The first game I bought was Breakout for the Atari 2600. Good memories. Of course, the first game I technically had was Combat, but that came with the Atari (back in the day when consoles always came with pack-ins).

The next game after that, I believe, was Missile Command. Both games were bought with b-day money and whatever else I saved.

I think it was Star Raiders for Atari. Actually I didn't buy it, my mom did. I was only about 2-3 years old when I first got my 2600. I'm glad my parents got me started so young. The first game I bought with my own money was the original Metal Gear for NES, which I think came out around Christmas when I was 5.

Zelda II was my first game I ever picked out. I admit it was a blind buy solely based on my love of the cartoon. Now its my all time favorite.

Mario 3 is the first game I actually paid for. Birthday money and a trip to TRU after a successful visit to the dentist. Great way to reward a kid for not having cavities. I still remember looking for the ticket and how nervous I was paying the cashier. We have had a previous trip where they ran out of the game but still had tickets on the floor. Those bastards...

I can't believe no one has mentioned this already. It was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that was ported to the NES from the awesome arcade game (I don't count Super Mario Bros. or Duck Hunt since those came with the system). Paid $35 bucks for it at KBtoys. It's the first and only game I bought for the system, sadly since I didn't have the money for games growing up. But I'm more than making up for that now, having discovered this site from reading EGM.

The first ones I can remember are Mouse Trap and Donkey Kong for ColecoVision to go along with the Donkey Kong Jr. the system came with.... IIRC .... those would be the first console games.....the Coleco Mouse trap had the keypad overlay and different keys to switch the doors and turn into the dog....it ruled the Atari version where 1 button did everything....fond memories.

Either way, I think it was during the big game crash of 1983 because I remember lots of 99 cent Atari 2600 cartridges at that time and being only 7, that would be at my price range.

It was a game from Broderbund for the Atari 800 on cassette tape back in 1981. I can't remember the exact title but I remember it was at the Big Ben's music store on Ventura Blvd. in Encino. Back in those days you had to drive a ways to find the stores that handled computer games.

I can't find a listing through Google but I believe the word 'lunar' was in the title. The game was a variant on the 'Lunar Lander' genre in which you had to land on one of three locations with a stranded astronaut so he could scamper into the ship. The major complication was a big lizardoid monster that would show up. If you landed on the opposite side of the monster from where the astronaut was, he would still try to run to your ship and leap into the monster's mouth en route. The monster had some cute masticating animation that would cause us to feed it repeatedly instead of playing the game correctly. Big novelty value back then.

You didn't have any weapons except for your ship's thruster. If you hovered over the monster close enough it would be killed but this expended fuel, of course. I could probably put together a clone with immensely better presentation in Flash over the course of an afternoon but it wouldn't have the same specialness as it did.

After that I got a few other cassettes and cartridges. Shamus, Star Raiders, Missile Command, Centipede, Galaxian, Miner 2049er, and a few others. Then I fell into the world of piracy and ruined my appreciation of game purchases for years.

Mine (and my brother's) was Ghosts N Goblins for the NES. I remember thinking the two screenshots we saw were the best graphics ever. This was during that brief time Nintendo replaced Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt with an 'Official Players Guide' that featured 50 or so NES games as a pack-in with the system. We cried over that purchase, as it was physically impossible for an 8-year old and a 6-year old to get past the second level in that game. I doubt I could do any better today.

a 2600 title for sure, I bought plenty and got my folks and such to get many.... but the one I remember really pushing for was Star Raiders (even though this one came later in the life of the system, I must have gotten other games before this), which I thought would completely open up new vistas of gaming goodness for me.

My first video game was a Pong system that used static plastic graphics of a tennis court, hockey rink or soccer field. Billed as 3 games, but it was the same game with different plastic overlays. This was replaced when we got a TV too big for the overlays with the National Semiconductor Adversarry game system (Pong).

First cart based game was Baseball for the RCA Studio; still have it today; big yellow box.

First game my Mom would play was Pac Man on the 2600, I would come home after a hard day at school and hear pac-man going once I got to the porch... for some reason that would piss me off that she got to stay home all day and play. :) Now at 60 she stays up all night and plays Zumba.

Paid $35 bucks for it at KBtoys. It's the first and only game I bought for the system, sadly since I didn't have the money for games growing up. But I'm more than making up for that now, having discovered this site from reading EGM.

My first game I got with my own money was TMNT 2: The arcade game. It cost me 50 bucks (birthday money). And I got it from Fedco. It came with a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. I thought it was cool to get pizza and not have to read a Book to earn it.

Great game, and I even got my name as the top score in the old SWAT PRO magazine. It was something like 1140.

The first game I ever got was SMB/Duck Hunt when my mom bought me an NES as a birthday gift in the late 80's.

The first game I ever bought with my own money was a loose copy of The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past for SNES for $14.99 back in the late 90's (the price is still the most I've paid for any SNES game). I still have it in my collection. :)

The first I saved money for and bought myself was the NES (Mario/duck hunt) and Double Dragon.

It wasn't my first, but I distinctly remember buying Chopper Command for the 2600 and I also remember buying Super Mario Bros 3 with my christmas money. That was after I lost interest in games for a couple years and I haven't lost that love since SMB3.

Good thread, OP.

I think Contra. Whatever it was, I remember I had to save my allowance for a very long time.

My brother had an NES, which later became my NES. He had a few games. The first game I bought: Metroid! I was six. It took me so long to earn that much money! I remember the first system and games I truly purchased for myself (through a job) was my Sega Genesis and its games. I paid $80 for my Genny, when I was 10-12 years old. I bought it at Aldi, if anyone knows what that is! :D

Ghost house for the Sega master system is the first game I saved money for and bought. Unless, you count the double dragon tiger handheld :D .

I remember when I got my Atari 2600 for Christmas, I had to be 5. Then I remember when my best friend got an NES for Christmas and we played Kung Fu for a week straight. Good stuff.

We had a ton of games for the Commodore 64, but I don't recall ever buying any on my own. Same for the Atari 2600, except maybe a game or two at a garage sale.

The first game I remember buying with my own money was the Sega Master System II (~$60 in ~1990). I didn't even have enough money left over to buy a game with it, but luckily it came with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built into the system.
