View Full Version : How do you say "Suikoden"? And other game names?

The only thing that bugs me more than saying "Suikoden" and knowing I am probably wrong, is hearing other people say it, because they really sound like crap when they say it.
Can someone tell me what the proper way to pronounce this word is? Possible pronunciations include:
1) SUE (Like the girl) kuh (rhymes with "duh") den
2) Swee (Like you're going to say "Sweet") kuh den (see above)
3) Sue - WEE kuh den (Like #2, but you sound like you're on the farm calling pigs)
4) sue KOE-den (emphasis on the KOE, which rhymes with "Toe")
and the one that I really think makes people sound like they have a mental deficiency...
5) Sue COY (Like that imposter with his buddy Vance on the Dukes of Hazzard for a year, rhymes with "toy") den
6) SOY (like the ninny milk-substitute) koe den
Those are just off the top of my head. I know there are other games that have given me a hard time in the past as well, feel free to post those as well. But does anyone actually know the correct way to pronounce this name?
Speaking of which - is it "Dis - guy - uh"
Or is it "Dis - Gee - uh"?
Dis guy uh
They pronounce it in the game.
And I think Suikoden is #4. At least that's how I've pronounced it forever.

How do you pronounce Ninja Gaiden, Panzeer Draoon Orta, and Ikaruga. I have heard multiple pronounciations of each of these, and I don't know which is correct.

I don't mind being wrong either.
Besides, I pronounce lots of those different ways. It's fun.

I've always said "Suh-koo-den." It's the most elegant, I think .. rolls off the tongue nicely. But I know it's wrong. Oh well.
I also pronounce "Sephiroth" wrong, too. I called him "Suh-fear-oth" for years until finally weening myself to "Sef-er-oth."

If "Suikoden" is Japanese, then it would be five phonetic characters, I think:
su - i - ko - de - n
each pronounced
sue - E - Ko - day - un
You wouldn't make a big emphasis on each syllable, though, and spoken quickly it wouldn't be quite such a mouthful as I am making it seem.

It is Ninja Guy-den. They've said Panzer Dragoon Orta a million times in the commercials so I don't know how anyone can mispronounce it. Panzer is easy. Dragoon is dra-goon. Orta is Or-Tah.

If it doesn't work for you (it won't work in Media Player Classic), open up Windows Media Player, and paste it into the open url box.

Correct, except for the pronounciation of 'de' (day) and 'n' (un). De is no different than 'te' in "ten" and 'n' is always sharp. Sue-E-ko-de-n. There is no soft E in KoE as I saw some people add.
In regards to other posts, I always laugh when I hear people say Ninja "Gayden". heh. It's closer to Guy (Ga, as is GaGa and E... GaE-den).
The more pressing question is... how do you pronounce his name Ryu? RaEYou? RYou, ReeYou? :) Ever since Ninja Gaiden (NES) and the SF2 days, the name Ryu has been Ra-E-You to me, though that's wrong. $10 says most others pronounce it RaEYou too!
I will say this - I used to get annoyed to hell by people saying "pokey-man."
Then you need to stay far far away from my mom! The queen of Pokeyman for sure... When my little bro was infatuated with Pokemon, she would always ask me what Pokeyman stuff she should get for him :)
She also pronounces Robot as Rowbutt. heh.

I think Ryu is like RYou (one syllable) since it's Japanese, like Ryo (which is RYoh, one syllable) in Shenmue, which was said in the game a bazillion times. I remember back in the SF2 days everyone pronounced it Rai-yu.
Okay, how do you guys say Baten Kaitos? (I haven't played the game yet, so maybe they say it in the game?)
(Edited for slight clarification)

I always said R - eye - oo (as in "you") so it comes out in 2 syllables - "Rye" - "You"

Ehv-an-jeal-yun
If that's for Evangelion, I think it's phonetic a la Japanese... meaning it's more like eh-van-geh-lee-on.
Ryu from Street Fighter is pronounced as:
Ree-you
They say his name in the anime series and such. That is how I have always pronounced Ryu's name in Ninja Gaiden as well...
