I got an invite to the PSP press event on Wednesday, and there's also the Bill Gates keynote address with potential Xbox 2 info. Good stuff :P

I'm undecided. My car started overheating on the way home last night and I have to see if it's a major repair or not. It's just a 3.5 hour drive from here and I already have the badge but at the moment just the distance to the mechanic is looking infinitely far.

What kind of car? Mileage etc? Could be as simple as a thermostat.... $20 bucks and an hour of time.

2000 Saturn SW2 coming up on 80K. I'm just about to get dressed and see if it will behave long enough to get there. At least it isn't pouring rain like yesterday.

What does CES stand for and how do you get an invite?
Yes, my boyfriend's car would overheat too. The sensor went bad and the dummy light didn't work but we didn't know that. It was a Delta '88, but made in 1977 or something weird like that. It didn't have an internal temperature gauge, so when it overheated, we didn't know what was wrong and that's what eventually killed the car. (Or rather, that's how my boyfriend killed the car.....)

Well dont let them rip you..
I cant count the times someone got a load of crap (big or small) shoved into their face for an auto repair that was inaccurate...
is it leaking or is it just overheating? Does the coolant fan kick on, is the rad cap on tight? is the resevoir full? Sorry i am hijacking this thread... mY winter car did this to me yesterday and it turns out its a $4 nipple that connects a coolant hose is broken from age..

Well, much to my stunned amazement, when I went out to put some water in this morning before crawling to the dealership, I found that the resevoir cap wasn't on! It was lying to one side where I'd probably put it when I put water in a couple of days ago. Maybe it isn't my fault but I cannot imagine how it got that way otherwise.
No telling how I messed up the engine driving around yesterday. I'm now amazed that it took so long to start having a problem. I filled the resevoir and put the cap on properly but barely made it to the service center without another overheat. I just got home and now I get to wait a few hours for them to offer their diagnostic.

CES is the Consumer Electronics Show, which has been running since the late 60's. Before E3 started, CES was the main venue for video and computer games to be shown to the press and dealers.
Getting in is pretty easy. If you have the slightest vestige of an involvement in the creation or sales of CE products you can wrangle a floor pass. The best passes are exhibitor, which gets you onto the floor a lot earlier, and press, which gets you a lot of suck-up value for gettting all the good tchotkes like t-shirts. In the last decade I've mainly attended as press but when I started going in 1984 I had all kinds strange fakes names and businesses to insure that not only would I have a badge but also whoever was with me since there was a good chance they'd be driving back then.
I've had a lot of odd experiences going to CES over the years. That first time was great because Coleco had announced that morning they were getting out of the video game and home computer business. This came as a big surprise to all those people manning the booth and showing some really good products that actually might have turned things around for them. Since they knew they were all looking at pink slips the following week they didn't care what anybody did in the booth. One of the displays was an internal modem for the Adam (which was an S100 system at heart) and they didn't care when I used it to call up bulletin boards at very long distance to write reports about the stuff at the show. By my estimate it probably cost about $300 for the calls I made, especially since one was to a BBS in Australia. The cachet of filing a live show report in that era was considerable.

It probably filled the resevoir and blew that cap off. Which could be a good sign at least the pressure is holding inside the system. Sounds like an electrical problem if indeed the resevoir did fill and knock that cap off.

Thanks epobirs and rynomite!
I wonder if Ohio is one of those states where you don't have to file any paperwork to declare a sole proprietorship......hm... :-k j/k Well, I won't be able to get to Las Vegas, but it sounds like it would be fun! Weren't most of the Adam computers defective and had to be shipped back? Sorry I don't know much about what happened in the 80's. I did have a Colecovision though, though.
If you go to their website, a company that buys and maintains brands and other intelluctual property wants to get into the gaming market. #-o (http://www.colecovision.com/).

I'm going, work-related. I'll be at the PSP thing, but I'm only going to the actual show one day. Budget problems...

You should put a warning on there. Website may cause permanent eye injury.

Not really. It's just a matter of paying. E3 is much harder on press credentials because they have horde of teen-agers with fansites trying to claim the same consideration as MSM folks. Since E3 is much more specific than CES it's also easier for them to determine who is legit but inevitably there is always thousands of underaged acnemongers making it a pain to get a look at anything.
It can be hard even if you are from a legit publication. I was just settling into my hotel room in Atlanta for the second E3 held there when I checked my e-mail and discovered the BYte the magazine no longer existed. I already had my badge but now instead of having someone buy my coverage I was now on an unpaid vacation.

I wonder if they would consider me Videogame press if I write videogame reviews for my school's newspaper. :)
