Just got around to reading the letters section of the latest OXM (KOTOR II on the cover) and they printed a letter from a reader describing how to boil a non-working demo disc.

I've had to boil 2 OXM demos out of 10 or so, including the one in this issue  I wonder why they have such a high occurence of this problem with their discs?

Letter in the issue is different from my method (told to me be a fellow CAG) I just hang the disc from a spoon and dip it in still boiling water for about 3 seconds.

Parboils it, silly.

If you just put it in the oven without boiling it, it doesn't come out al dente.

myke.

I see the humor in your topic line, but I just wanted to add, this is OXM's reply to that letter:

We say: Thanks Walter. While we can't officially endorse this procedure, it's great to see what creative Xbox owners will come up with in order to get their game on. For reference, though, should you ever receive a non-working demo disc from us, we'll replace it for you at no charge. See www.officialxboxmagazine.com/faq.html for details.

What about PSM discs? It was my first issue this month and my PStwo refused to read the disc. It can't be my system now, can it?

Does it hurt to ask since my question is along the lines? Did I offend you somehow?

and what does the boiling do?

To prevent scratches in the polybag the disc surface is coated in a layer of wax. Boiling melts this wax away, allowing for better readability by optical drives.

(At least that's what I understand.)

Just ignore him. I've never tried this boiling tecnique, so I can't tell you if it'll work on OPM discs, hell, even the OXM discs. If you don't mind the hassle, I'm pretty sure you can call OPM and ask for a replacement disc.

I had the demo lying around for a bit now. I just stuck it in boiling water for ~10 seconds and it actually worked. Cheers.

I've used it on an Xbox Music Mixer disc that wouldn't read at all. After boiling a few minutes, it worked fine. I can't say the boiling was what did it, but it couldn't hurt as long as you do it right.

The way I due the boiling thing is I get a plate and pour really hot water in it. I then place the disk in the center of it and keep pouring water on it. I then use a kitchen utential to pick it up. It works really well.

That's a good one. Did you hear that if you dip your pecker in boiling hot water it'll grow an inch ? You have to do it 3 times a day for a week, it's guaranteed !!
