Final Fantasy you can come by for ~$20, I've never seen a decently priced Dragon Warrior IV though

I could never get in to the Dragon Warrior games either but my girlfriend absolutely loves them. She's working her way through 7 right now with about 50 hours done so far

DW1 is pretty suck ass. I remember loving it as a kid, but I recently got it in a lot and had to set it aside after a while. An hour or two of random battles to level up to where you can get to the next dungeon/area. Do what you need to do there (generally fairly quickly) and repeat. Plus you can only save in one place in the entire world.

Probably would be more enjoyable on an emu since you could save state anywhere.

Also have DWII, but I haven't cracked that out yet. Hope it's better.

I imagine I'll have a similar experience with FF1 (also part of that lot) but I'm pretty sure you can save in any town in that one at least.

Don't know if it's good, but Day Dreamin' Davey seems rare. With a name like that, it's gotta be <insert punchline here>.

I was going to mention Faria. I remember seeing that in some magazine years ago and thinking it looked like it would be fun. Never played it, sadly.

DW2 is a huge improvement over DW1. It's the first RPG I remember with multiple people in the party. I think it came out before FF1? Anyway, it's a good game.

I'd say Earthbound is a rare NES RPG, since only one prototype exists. You can get the rom anywhere though.

The Dragon Warrior series is my favorite of all time. The first game is a little rough, but give them a break it was the first console RPG ever made. The next couple were huge improvments.

DW3 is tied with Doom my favorite game ever.

Ditto DW3. Best 8bit RPG ever. You can't judge the Dragon Warrior franchise on the first game. The rest are much cooler.

DW II is a lot better than DW I. I loved it... until I got the ship. The game looses all sense of direction after you get the ship, IMHO, and requires a walkthrough for the rest of it.

Final Fantasy is a common game, not rare.

The hardest to find NES RPGs are things like

Dragon Warrior III and IV
Faria
Legend of the Ghost Lion
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom

Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom

I remember renting that a LONG time ago. I didn't really like it too much, and not because of the weirdness. It was just kinda hard to do anything in the game.

Not rare, but easily one of my favorites is Star Tropics.

Dragon Warrior 2 is much better than the first one. You have a party of 3 people and you can save in any town if I remember correctly.

It's fairly hard to find from my experience, and that is over years as a NES collector. However, it's not expensive due to there being virtually no demand for the game.

I think Ultima: something or other came out prior to DW1 and you had a bunch of people in the party. Not popular, though.

Although most of those are definately rare, most were not released to the public. Tengen tetris used to bring in big bucks, but I noticed the prices have come down in the last year.

I had no idea Snow Brothers was rare. I picked it up at a yard sale a few years ago for like $.50!

Final Fantasy isn't rare if you are just looking for the CArt, but if you want the box and manual and original inserts & in good condition, its going to cost you around 50$ if not more!

As an NES collector, you should be aware that rare is not the same as valuable.

Nope, most of those were released to the public. In fact, all of them could be got by the public except the Nintendo World Championships carts. Some may have been a very limited release or mail-order only like Stadium Events (only in the NE U.S.) and Cheetahmen II, but they were released.

And Tengen Tetris isn't rare, just hard to find and somewhat valuable. There are ~100,000 copies around according to most accounts.

I've have all the domestically released Squaresoft games BOXED and complete (only one or two are missing instructions):

Final Fantasy
King's Knight (no instructions)
Rad Racer
Rad Racer 2

Also:

SMB
Legend of Zelda
Hogan's Alley
Duck Hunt
Castlevania
Metal Gear
Golf
Ice Hockey
Startropics
Startropics 2
Gyromite
Adventures of Dino Riki
Maniac Mansion
Adventures of Tom Sawyer (I thought it was the Squaresoft game, but later realized that game was only released in Japan)
Superspike V-ball
Monster Party

Wanna know the best part? I picked up 90% of these games over the past 4 years for under $5.

God I love Music Recyclery.

I don't get why it would go for that much. I have the original with the box and manual and I never thought anything of it. It actually sold a lot of copies in the US despite the misconception that Americans only got into FF after 7. I can actually think of a few people who have the game.

Also, although it's not rare, Crystalis is the best RPG on NES. Willow and Star Tropics are also decent.

People actually keeping the instructions and box is a rarity with anything. As time goes by, your box and inserts will become more and more rare. Since most people who owned video games during the NES days were kids, they weren't cared for well or even kept. Why keep instructions when you know how to play?

I kept all of mine because I was/am a freak. The only things I pitched were the foam block and the posters/ads. I had to pitch the posters because I was a kid and they were hanging on my wall. Pretty gnarly decorations!

They really need to add posters to more games these days and still have them look retro.
