January 12, 2005 - Addressing concerns and challenges in the game industry workplace, the International Game Developer's Association (IGDA) will host a Quality of Life Summit at this year's Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco.

The Summit, scheduled for March 8, will address industry issues such as long hours, high pressure on developers, and the way both employees and companies are affected. The Summit comes in a rising tide of concern over how developers are treated at some of the industry's most powerful companies.

"Tackling quality of life issues and maturing production practices is necessary for the industry to move forward," said Jason Della Rocca, Executive Director, IGDA. "Attendees of the Summit will be inspired by the reality that there is a way to be successful in the games business, while enjoying a sensible work/life balance." I doubt this will do anything, but at least people are talking about it.

Don't be so sure. What will happen is that there will be a company (probably a smaller one) that will offer 40 hour work weeks for a bit less pay. If some good talented developers make that trade, more companies will offer it. If money is the only thing that the developers care about, then nothing will change.

But, as companies fight to survive during consolodation, this is something that could really make a company stand out to the work force.

That would be an interesting summit to go to.

I was thinking about going to GDC, but I'm not sure if I can foot up the money to go. It's a big trip for the school, but I'm waiting for news on a trip to E3.
