does anyone have any tips on beating the 1st gym leader?

Wow, the first gym leader? That would be Roxanne of Rustboro, and she specializes in rock types, the two she uses are Geodude and Nosepass. So I would recommend water and grass types, which are strong against them. Surely after all the pokemon games, this would be common knowledge? :3

Another Ruby related question; Has anyone caught any shinies? I've logged in over 350 hours, and have gotten a shiny Crobat (Golbat on Victory road) and a Shiny Linoone (zigzagoon on route 118.) Crobat is pink and green, but Linoone is only a lighter shade of brown with brown eyes.

Nope. Never really cared to. I'm happy enough finding regular ones with good IVs that I can EV train into uber powerful jugernauts of death, or well rounded hazing annoyers.

Well, its not like you purposely go out looking for them. seeing a shiny is totally random, like rolling an 8,000 sided die each time you see a pokemon and hoping it lands on JUST the right number for it to be shiny. :3

It's an alternate color palate for a pokemon, and when it goes into play it has glittering "shiny" effect to go with it.

I love shiny pokemon. some are better colored than norm, some are worse. A better one is a Blue gardevoir with orange horns. :D a bad shiny is Meowth. There's barely a difference! Here's a link to the whole palette of shinies:

Edit: Black and Red Charizard is teh Roxxor. I plan to get Fire Red when it comes out and restart as many times as I have to to get shiny Charmander.
