View Full Version : I never played Resident Evil before....

Until today. I've been bored all day. I played some Firefighter F.D. 18 earlier but that got boring quick...

So I told Trakan about the games I was thinking about playing next and he suggested Resident Evil: Code Veronica X (that I got for free at TRU).

I played for about half an hour.. mainly checking out the FMV's and stuff. But I died and it made me start all over. I got beaten up by those monsters pretty quick. I'm sure I'll do better on my next try. To me, this game seems like a half assed Silent Hill though. It's all colorful, and it isn't scary at all. Maybe I should try Fatal Frame 2 or Siren next...

Just wait till you get a little further in Code Veronica, it gets a lot better. You will probably end up liking it.

RE was around before SH was. Code Veronica is not the best one to get started on playing, especially when you don't know the background story. I got bored of CV very, very quickly, but pick up RE2 on PS1. The soundtrack is amazing, the gameplay is awesome, it's just one of the best games ever. SH does the scary thing very, very well.. RE never really was too scary, more of a "hey, that's weird.." followed by an expected suprise moment.

Code Veronica X is the worst game to start with, since that is easily the hardest in the series. One reason is that there is not enough bullets in this game. It is best to look for RE1 Dual Shock to start off.

What about outbreak, how is that?

Go with RE 1 or 2 first... 2 is my favorite.

I think they're all pretty hard, 2 you can manage even if you're new to the series though, same with the first game.

Also, should I use the d-pad or the analog stick?

OK, I read a FAQ and it told me that sometimes it's better to run than fight... I just gotta get used to the fighting mechanics and stuff.. I'm sure I'll figure it out. Maybe I'll even enjoy the game, but how can it beat my beloved Silent Hill series? :p

Crap. Especially online.

"Hey! Here's an idea! Let's pit four players in a city where they must work together and have to use pre-set comments with no option whatsoever to humanly communicate! That's awesome!"

In all fairness, I love the RE series, but Outbreak was a good idea with a bad plan. I look forward to the second, it might make me pick up a cheap PS2 sometime. If you can gather four friends near a PC to play and hop in a chat room, it's actually an alright experience - even better if you can find a PC chat program with a microphone while playing. It's a little extra work, sure, but it works.

I liked Outbreak even though the loading time is bad. If you get it and go online I'd be happy to play with you

Maybe I never gave Silent Hill the chance it deserves, but when it is scary Resident Evil is far scarier for me. Code Veronica is never really scary though. RE2 had some "oh shit" moments, REmake certainly did, and RE4 does at the beginning when you don't have many supplies but still have shit loads of not-zombies coming at you. Personally Code Veronica is my second favorite, but it definitely isn't a good starting out point.

Code Veronica was my first RE game (Dreamcast Version) which makes it my favorite (besides 4 of course) and I didnt think it was too hard...except the Tyrant fight. Just make sure you save 30 explosive bow gun arrows and you will be fine......

You have a RE avatar :P

I'll try to pick up RE:CVX again but if I don't enjoy it I'll just give up and go to the next title... I've haven't played DMC either (also.. free from TRU). But if I do like it, I'll try to find a copy of Outbreak... I've been looking for something fun online that isn't an RPG, a sports games, or a FPS.

I'm going to bed now, but thanks for the all the replies everyone. As always, it's appreciated.

You haven't played DMC and you own it
Bow your head in shame...Tsk Tsk

And yes I have a RE Avatar....because RE is my favorite game series.

Seriously, do not judge the Resident Evil series on Outbreak. Outbreak is kinda like the brother-in-law that wears speedos to the pool party. Part of the family, but we don't speak of him much....

RE:CVX is awesome. I put like 4 hours into it the other day, and could not stop playing it. I had played it before, and never got all that far (I would put in like 3 hours and then get stuck and quit)

Right now I am on Disc 2 (playing the DC version) and will probably try and finish it this weekend. Really really enjoying it (I would almost say as much as I did RE4)

personally, my favorite is RE2. Though, I haven't played it in years, I remember it having a great storyline and some excellent moments. Code Veronica was okay, but not a great one to start out the series with. And yeah, always try to run first, fight second, save ammo and health for the bosses.

I liked RECV a lot, but it was also the main series' first attempt at full 3D (instead of static backgrounds). Needless to say, Capcom was still experimenting with 3D in the series at that point. You probably should start with the original RE on PSone or REmake if you have a GCN. That's where the story begins.

I didn't even bother with DMC2. All I know is DMC the first was the most mind numbingly repetitive game I've ever played with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Also:Trish: "Looks like we have a winner..."

Dante: "JackPot!"

Worst ending dialog ever.

That wasnt the very ending dialog, and it wasnt as much story as it was for the gameplay. Did you even get past the first 2 missions? Did you play it on Easy-Automatic?

Oh yeah, and "Devil Never Cry" was a real high point.
