False Hope

Name or list your favorite classic games that, no matter the advancements of modern videogames, will never die , never be beaten, or simply can never be replaced. Anything ranging from the 2600 to the Dreamcast, however 2-D games are preferred.
My own personal favorites, (since I am an RPG fan), are Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III (or VI or whatever.)

Console only?
Or are we really opening this topic up with the PC based games?

So many good games... I think I'll go with the NES classics Megaman, Bionic Commando, and my traditional Thanksgiving game, Wizards and Warriors.

Arcade Ms. Pac-Man w/speedup chip.
There has never been a remake, simulation or emulation that comes anywhere near equaling this, the greatest of all arcade machines.
Where else can you experience pure gaming bliss for only 25¢?
I think the OP meant 'can't be beat' as in the game is so good no game will ever top it, not as in you can never beat this game. I think... :-k
For me it would be SMB1 and Mario 64. Both games seemed like such an amazing advance to me over what I had played before them.

i don't think it qualifies as classic, but my entire life will be incomplete from the hours i spent on the final character of Sword of Vermillion. i feel like i cruised through that game, and that last character still torments my dreams 13 years later. there is no ending that could have justified all the work i put into trying to off that monster--even if I tried again today and won, i could never have peace.

Er... Yes, that was the general idea. Sorry for any confusion, onetrackmind. :)

x-com, with Civ a distant second. X-com is digital crack, pure and simple. Naming team members after friends and family takes it to another level.

Mike Tysons Punchout - Tyson is basically impossible for me... he always smokes me in a matter of 30 seconds.
The trick I use for Tyson-Don't thow any punches in the first round, just avoid. Then he gets tired and is easier to hit in the second round.

Er... Once again, the main idea is to name games that, despite advances of modern videogames, will always have a place in your game line-up, but, uh, whatever you want to say, eh?

Dragon Warrior IV (my favorite game ever despite its flaws)
Chrono Trigger
FFVI (except the fights get lame when everyone can throw spells and Ultima around - but what a rockin story and battle system until then)
SMB3 (or world---pretty great too)
Secret of Mana (played multiplayer)
Civilization II (talk about bleeding eyes addictive)
and its nifty fantasy spinoff Master of Magic, and sci-fi spinoff Master of Orion II
And you know what else is still a good damn RPG? Betrayal at Krondor for PC. Ugly as hell but still awesome.
Baldur's Gate II
And possibly Devil May Cry. Have to see if it stands the test of time.

Thats prett damn funny if true. As much as I still follow Tyson in real life and wish for his comeback (that would 100% seal him as a great champion) Its still damn ironic.

I disagree a bit with the title, only because I'm not convinced that classic games are neccesarily better. I think the great games of the past hold their own with the best of today, but I definitely think there are games today that will be classic and playable 10-20 years from now..
That being said. Games like Mike Tyson's punchout (here is what's sad, I have beaten Tyson, but I can't beat Super Macho Man to save my life. Every year or so, I pop it in, get up to him, get royally spanked, then I'm done), Super Mario Brothers (almost all of them), and the Zelda games (especially 1 and LTTP) are games that will always have a place in my gaming collection.

Tyson always takes his first swing at either 3 or 5 seconds (I forget which one).
He stops the 1-hit knockout punches at 1:30
If you just try to dodge it will throw your rhythm off. Get a good start by dodging his first punch (once you figure out if it's 3 or 5 seconds) and nail him. You can take off 75% of his energy by 1:30 with some practice.

Dude, we must be related. I totally agree regarding Baseball Stars by the way. To add to the list:
Gyromite and the Robot (For those of us who actually used it)
Gyromite w/out the Robot (For those of us who "cheated" an either had a friend or were especially coordinated using 2 controllers at the same time)
--Not a great game but certainly an experience not likely to be duplicated.
Double Dragon Arcade Game
Super Mario Arcade Game
-- The first 2 games that opened my eyes to the possiblities of games with a destination/ending/actual point (though I do love the pac)
Operation Wolf Arcade Game
Street Fighter 2 Arcade Game
--IMO, these 4 games are the grandfathers of 90% of non-RPG games today.

The entire SEGA MASTER SYSTEM library.
My friends had the SMS and I had the NES growing up. It is impossible to define exactly what set the Master System apart but the games are in a category of their own. They're not necessarily "better" than NES games, they're just unique. Like if you walked outside and the sky was a light shade of green and the grass was a light shade of blue. For those of us who played the SMS, you konw what I mean. It will likely never be duplicated.
