Should I work at Gamestop-sort of? (Poll)

So, here's my story. I'm 38, have two kids, a wife, and am a public school teacher in Chicago. Everyday after school (or work) I go to Gamestop to talk about games with my friendly Gamestop employees. We joke, we laugh, we break bread. In any case, they are saying I should work there part time since I'm home by 3:00 most days, and will be off in the summer. The more I think about it, the more it sounds like a decent idea. I spend too much on games as it is, it would be nice to 1) get the discount, 2) earn game money by selling games and not have to spend my "real" money on games, and 3) tell people that their children shouldn't be buying GTA:SA...

So should I do it, should I start now...wait till the summer? Help me out, give me your opinion.

just alot of shit, hell you could find 3-5 stories on people who were treated like shit at these stores while workign there right here on CAG, and a big one is the story of Realty Frige or whatever his name is.

It'll be the weirdest thing (for me at least) if I saw any of my old school teachers working at a game store. It'll be even weirder if I saw my professors at Gamestop...

Since you spent a lot of time at Gamestop anyway, I think you should just take the offer. You get paid for spending time at Gamestop, isn't that good enough? You might want to start a little before summer because you can try it first before doing it full-time in summer.

I've been working at Gamestop for nearly two years, make sure you get to know the 3 guys in charge before you take the job though (manager, Assistant and the 3rd key) because you will barely see the other employees. If you get along with all of them, go for it. Don't expect a lot of hours, but you do get first dibs on stuff and a better discount than pretty much every other game retailer (15%) plus a 30% discount at Barnes & Noble.

I don't think he was soliciting anyone's opinion regarding his lifestyle when he asked our opinion on the job thing. :roll: I would like to assume that the small amount of time he would be working at GS would coincide with time that his kids are playing with friends/doing homework/with mom/etc; either way, its not our business, and there's no need to be a jerk.

As for my opinion regarding the OP's question - I say go for it if your lifestyle allows. I'm a married 28-yr old grad student/teacher, and i got a part-tim job in my buddy's pizza place the same way. I was always hangin out in there drinking beer and eating, so he offered me a job. Now I make pies for about 15 hrs/wk, get some extra cash, and some free food and beer - everyone wins, especially since my wife is so busy with her own career that she wouldn't be home during those times anyway.

So hey, if it works for you the same way my situation works for me, give it a shot - if it sucks, you don't have to do it for very long, and i'm sure your buds there will understand!

If you've never worked retail before, a part-time position could be an eye-opening experience. But to echo some of the other posts here (sort of), I'd say give it a try, so long as the hours coincide with the time you spend there anyway. Otherwise, I'm sure your family would appreciate it more if you kept the GameStop visits not for business but purely for pleasure. Your love of this hobby, if not your pocketbook/potential paycheck, might appreciate it, too. :wink: Balancing games and family can be tough sometimes.

As for those telling me I should spend more time with my family...for the record there are very few people who spend more time with their wife and children than I do with mine. I am home every night, all weekend, and all I do is cook dinner, play with my two children, and correct 7th and 8th grade compositions.

I change diapers, give them baths, sit at the dinner table, take Master's classes and write lesson plans. I throw out the garbage, read bedtime stories, watch Elmo and teach my son how to play Mario DS.

He worked retail for quite a while until about 10 years ago when he started refereeing soccer,basketball and softball. he always uses the money he makes for vacations and other extras and it always seemed to work out well. Working retail does suck. It is a lot worse than you think it would be. You get to meet some real a-hole customers. Still, I think you should at least try the 4 hours a week first and go from there.

I'm in the same situation as you (school teacher & gamer). I recently took a job at EB Games part-time for 3 reasons. 1. My EB paycheck helps pay for some games. 2. The discount helps, also. 3. (the biggest reason for me) I get to go to E3 this year!
I only work one or two days a week at 5-6 hrs per shift. It's not a lot of time away from home. But, like I said earlier, it helps me pay for some games & I get to go to E3. This looks like it might be the best E3 in years, if all three companies reveal their new consoles!

I used to be a manager at Software Etc./Gamestop. I loved Software Etc., but hated it when it became Gamestop. But even then, I'd still do it for the following reasons;

a) You'll only be a grunt. You won't need to deal with the higher-ups with the exception of your keyholders.

b) You're only there for a few hours a week. No matter how few hours you get, you'll still get the discounts, and if you get a lot of hours, that's just more cash for games.

c) You don't really need the job, so if you don't like it, just frikkin' leave.

If you're there already.. might as well get paid. As a fellow Chicagoan.. just curious as to which store you're at - For your sake, I pray it's not the one by North/Western Ave. All the employees I've seen there have been unhelpful, clueless jagoffs (most likely taking a cue from management.)

For me, it would be worth it just to get first crack at penny guides and incoming used games with the paycheck as a nice bonus. :-)

I'm here, it's just that I try to avoid any topic that contains the phrase "work at gamestop" because it brings back so many memories of being screwed over by incompetent management, dumb-ass customers, a steadily decreasing discount (it was 30% only about 2 years ago, I believe), and trying to make a car payment on three hours a week for over a month despite having high numbers. MY advice to you is that, if you don't need the job, don't do it. Please. 15% is shat comapred to what you can get from Target/waiting a month or so. If you're concerned about older or rarer games, then I wouldn't bother too much because at only 4 hours, I'd suspect you wouldn't be there enough to snag anything and the three keys/ASM/SM have dibs before you as well.
Ultimately it's your decision, but in my experience there (about a year and a half) I've found that getting 30% off books, or coming across a slightly rarer game isn't worth the hassle, torment, aggravation, wearing of loafers, or the often times irrational and mean customers. Whatever you choose, good luck.

Why not. If you're there anyway, and it won't take any more time away from your family. Convenient, a little extra cash, gaming discounts, I'm assuming an environment/coworkers you like. I might do the same if the hours were decent and there was one convenient to me.
Working retail does, or can, suck, but I would think there's a difference between working at GS and working at Target, Best Buy, Dollar Tree.
You're a public school teacher, so dealing with smartass/rude kids would be nothing new ;), and I'm sure you're just as familiar with BS 'corporate' [BoE] policies, etc.
