Hey, I just completed the Half-Life 2 Demo I downloaded yesterday and I totally want this game now! Here are my questions:
1.) Where can I get the best deal on Half-Life 2 (best price)?
2.) What different versions can you buy; how're they different?
3.) How long/how to you install Half-Life 2?
4.) Is Counter-Srike: Source free if you purchase Half-Life 2?
5.) How easy are "mods" to install and use?
This'll be my first PC game purchase so I'm very clueless as you can see by my questions above. :D

This was my first PC game purchase too! Don't know too much but here goes
1) Don't know
2) There's a collector's edition and a regular one, the collector's has Half Life 1:source and other stuff.
3) It was easy to install, maybe took a little longer than most games but it wasn't that long
4) Yes
5) Yes IMHO, don't have a lot of mods yet, just garry's mod and that was pretty easy

1. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=32-128-127&depa=0
Best price I know of.
2. There's the retail version (just game and CS), collecter's edition (w/ game, CS, HL 1: Source, art book, & t-shirt), and the three versions you can buy off of Steam (more info here (http://www.steampowered.com/)).
3. Eh, it takes a little while, but not too bad, if you have a little patience. Unless Steam is acting up, which has been known to happen.
4. Yes, comes with every purchase option
5. I'm pretty sure this will vary from mod to mod, but I know that the game is pretty mod friendly, so I'd guess that most should be pretty painless to install.
Oh, and congrats on your first PC game, guys! Welcome to the club, and hope you get many more (I have over 300).

the mods are really easy to install, just like a setup program, the hardest would be to locate your hl2 directory.

Okay, two more questions:
1.) How is Day of Defeat?
2.) The Half-Life 2: Deathmatch thingy comes on the version on NewEgg, right?

I haven't played DoD:Source, but the original was pretty fun... think of it like a CS but World War2 based.
As for HL2:DM, that should be a free download for everybody, reguardless of what HL2 package you choose.
This is one heck of a first PC game purchase... welcome to the club

So could anyone tell me if Day of Defeat is a good game? Also, can you communicate with a mic on Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Counter-Strike: Source, or Day of Defeat: Source?

I know for a fact you can talk with a microphone in CS:S, but I'm not sure about HL2:DM nor DoD:S. Truthfully, 90% of the people who have mics missuse them, and it takes away from the fun of the game. But that 10% who use it to direct commands, etc make for good CS:S games.

DOD:S isn't even out yet. You can use a mic in all mods, including Team Fortress, HL2DM, etc. But some servers disable it.

It took me about 10 minutes to install with me coming in and out of the room. As for mods, usually they come with instructions on how to use and install them if it is even necessary to.

Well, on the Half-Life 2 site with all the versions, it says Silver and up gets a copy of Day of Defeat. So if you bought that before it was released, how would you get your copy?

I'd say one of the major differences between the regular and collector's edition is that the collector's edition is in DVD format, which is only 1 disc, but you must have a DVD-ROM. The regular one is CD format and it is 5 discs and you do not need a DVD-ROM. I got mine for $29.99 on newegg.com with free shipping. Don't know what it is now.

Does the silver edition come with a DVD? I have a DVD-ROM and I'm much rather install one disc than five.

What "silver edition"? If you're referring to buying it over Steam, Steam doesn't ship you out anything. You download it and play it.. you can choose to also back it up. The retail collector's version is the ONLY version that includes the game on a DVD.. but as far as I know, you don't get any discs, CD-Rom OR DVD, if you order it off Steam.

I got the CE from amazon on friday (for $45 shipped), but now I'm not so sure that was a good idea. Is the silver version worth the extra $15? I kind of like the idea of having an actual copy of the game, and it seems that all the free games in the world would be useless without the time to play them (and I haven't played HL1 or CS, so it's kind of like having three new games anyway). Any thoughts?
