I was tired of debating Nintendo dropping the DVI outputs from the system. So I wanted to discuss why didn't they add digital surround sound to the system to begin with.

Yeah like sabotaged Sony and Microsoft so that the superior system would be the only system

No body knows why, maybe they didn't give a damn, but again no body really knows. Frankly I could careless if it came with audio digital out, theres tons of other features the cube could have supported but didn't. Nintendo always been hard pressed to put "trendy" technology on there systems, which is a shame but that's Nintendo. At least they support Pro Logic 2 (which is what I use).

They did/do produce the most affordable console. I think that they try to shy away from the $300 lauch level as much as possible and if that means that a few technophiles don't get to use all of their equipment hooked up, oh well. How many sales did they lose because of this? Probably very few. They found plenty of other ways to lose sales.

Imagine some of the games with surround sound:
Resident Evil series
Metroid Prime series
Zelda
Rogue Squadron/Rebel Strike
etc...

Dolby Digital 5.1 would take up lots more room on the disc, and since the gamecube discs are small to begin with, that wouldn't work out too well. Almost all the games do have surround sound as Dolby Prologic II. If you have a system that supports this, it still sounds bad ass. RE4 sounds awesome in DPLII.

I know this is kind of one of those "what if" kinda topics, but I can't help but think how great Metroid Prime 1 or 2 or maybe even Eternal Darkness would sound in 5.1. And even in Pro Logic II, games sound much better on an optical cable in comparison to standard RCA cables. Although it is Pro Logic II, playing REZ on my home theatre system is one hell of an experience. But then again, so is Ninja Gaiden in 5.1

The GameCube already supports surround sound. Pro Logic II supports 5.1.

Huh?
Dolby Surround
Dolby Pro Logic
Dolby Pro logic II
and
Dolby Digital 5.1 are all different.
The gamecube doesn't output dolby digital 5.1, sorry. Any regular stereo system can support standard "surround", it's a matter of wiring the center channel speakers correctly. However, Digital 5.1 is a completely different animal. First, you need a source(which the GC doesn't have) then you need the receiver.

That's correct, it doesn't support DB 5.1, but it has virtual surround which act's like 5.1. Although 5.1 is better, virtual surround (with PLII) gets the job done and is how I have my gaming room setup. When someone walks from behind from the left you hear it from behind from the left, and so on.
