View Full Version : CheapyD on ESPN2's Cold Pizza - AGAIN! (Thursday 2/24/05) GT4 & MVP 2005
CheapyD
01-30-2005, 09:42 PM
Looks like I'm going to be back on Thursday, 2/24/05 to talk about Gran Turismo 4 and MVP Baseball 2005 (I had a chance to play both last week).
The show airs from 8AM-10AM EST on ESPN2. It is repeated immediately afterwards.
Last time, the segment aired around the 1 1/2 hour mark, but I don't know what time it will really air.
Old Post
The fine folks at ESPN2's Cold Pizza were kind enough to invite me on their program to discuss video game shopping, epecially online shopping.
I'm not sure when it will air, but I am taping it (EDIT) next week.
The show will air Airing Thursday, Feb 10th from 8AM-10AM EST on ESPN2
Thanks to guyver2077 for providing the video stream:
 Click here to watch the streaming video... (http://www.themiamifamily.com//Videos/CHEAPYONTV.WMV)
EDIT:
Ok, we are now doing a straight up preview of NBA Street 3/FIFA Street instead of the shopping segment. The had a little problem with "the ass" so we are going with www.CheapyD.com , which will get people here regardless.

As long as those lurkers and hoarders click CheapyD's links, they're good for the site. May not be good for you, but they're good for the continued operation of the site.
And yeah, your talking points sound fine. They're common sense to us, but like you said, you won't be addressing the typical CAG.

Cheapy the points look good, but one suggestion: I'd add a "Waiting a while for new releases" point. Maybe mention the virtue in waiting for pricedrops. Since most people are busy anyways, waiting a few weeks and saving some money might seem like a plausible idea. Or maybe just include that minor point in your last section, "Buy older titles."
Other than that, goodluck.

Cheapy, congradulations on getting on to Cold Pizza, I'll make sure to record it as I mostl ikely will be working.
I think you should also mention to watch for special deals on pre-ordering games. You can usually get some great swag if you pre-order games and on the bigger games you can get free overnight shipping. This is great because in my experience most of the gaming stores don't get the new releases until the day after their target date, and you don't have to go out to get the game, it comes right to your door.

First of all, congrats! Tell us when it airs and remember to comb your hair. From the look of your avatar it seems like it needs it badly. ;-)
I think those topic points and the responses that you have laid out for them are great. You might want to add in the "turning unused games into money" point that looking at local, independent or small chain stores can yield some great deals and give more cash than major chains on trade ins as well.
In relation to GameRankings.com, Warner Bros. announced that that it will vary the amount it asks for royalties on video games based on game reviews from sites like GameRankings.com and MetaCritic.com so even companies are now using the internet to help prevent bad game development. I'm not sure if that was mentioned on the Game Industry boards or not, but just a FYI...can't help to remind at least. :P

Using the Internet to be a smart video game shopper
Video games are expensive, especially when you consider new DVD releases typically cost $20 and most newly released games cost $50. By using the Internet, you can easily educate yourself, and take advantage of the best deals on the best games.
That's a great point. You may want to throw in some numbers about comparative amount of time spend, about how you may watch a good dvd 2-3 times, but a good game will usually keep you entertained for almost 20 hours.
{If allowable/acceptable: The best way to educate yourself is to check out CheapAssGamer.com. CAG is a video game shopping community whose members are always on the lookout for the best video game sales and deals at online and local retailers. The members share their discoveries with each other on the site’s message board. This means you will always have the latest gaming sale information right at your fingertips.}
Brilliant. Short, concise, and not overly self-serving. If they allow it, say it.
Roll with the punches if they decided to call you on it... well all know you can :)
Here are some general tips that can stretch your gaming budget farther:
Using online resources to find the best quality games
There is nothing worse then spending hard earned money on a game that is a dud. Websites like GameRankings.com takes reviews from major gaming news sites and give each game an overall average review score.
You can get lists of the best-reviewed games according to genre and console platform, making it much easier to find well made games you might be interested in.
Good. That's solid advice.
Buy used games and save money.
Some online retailers offer used games for sale. EBgames.com, in particular has especially good deals and provides the original game box and manual for current generation games. They give the same return policy on their used products as their new products (30 days) and you can even go to a local store to return it there is a problem.
In addition, there are coupon codes and other promotions, which enable you to receive substantial discounts and free shipping.
Great. You may even want to mention old school stuff here, talking about the current rise in popularity of nostalgia driven franchises, and mention that the internet is a GREAT source for hunting these down.
Online rental services offer good value
Online rental services such as GameFly.com allow you to rent video games by mail, similarly to DVD rental services like Netflix. For $22 a month, you can have a 2 games out at a time. When you get tired of the game, you simply place the game in the supplied mailer and drop it in the mail box. Best of all, if decide you want to keep a game, GameFly charges you a reasonable price, and will then send you the next game on your rental list. They also sell used games at good prices to non-rental subscribers, but members get a small discount.
Sounds good.
Turning unused games into money
Major gaming retailers like EBgames, GameStop, and even Blockbuster will give you cash or credit for your trade-ins. Generally speaking, you will receive less than if you sold the game on Ebay, but it can be more convenient. Try to wait for special promotions to maximize your trade-in values. You can even trade games directly with other users on websites like CheapAssGamer.com
Great. I really like how you're keeping it general, and bringing in the names of specific companies only when necessary.
Buy older titles
There are literally hundreds of games available for all the current generation systems. Just because a game wasn’t released in the last few months doesn’t mean it should be ignored. Retailers will often try to clear these games out at a loss, just to make room for new inventory. These are the sales that get my users at CheapAssGamer.com the most excited as you can pick up great games for just a few dollars.
Mention the new tiered models that the companies have here... Player's Choice, Platinum and Greatest hits.
You may want to mention watching for those hidden gems, the games by smaller developers, even if published by major houses that can be found released at a budget price, but offer a full priced game experience.
The Sega Sports line is to mention here, as is Katamari Damacy.

Another point you may want to bring up...
Low release price (or price in general) does not always mean low quality software.
It's a stigma that exists, and will at times will scare away people from promising software, because it's been so drilled into people's minds.
There's a couple great examples of this, the best of them being things released recently at the 19.99 price point.
KingDox
01-31-2005, 12:43 AM
You should mention that Dvds and games are usually on sale the first week they are out. If you don't get them the first week then you usually have to wait like a month before you see another price drop. Some times if you really want an item you should buy it the week it comes out.

You may want to touch on sports games. Good info for the ESPN2 crowd. Since they're yearly, sports titles get "obsolete" quickly. If you don't care about having the most up to date rosters, you can buy last year's hot sports title for just pennies on the dollar. Also point out that because of this, don't expect to get anything other than sympathy bucks when you trade in that outdated sports game.
My advice is:
1. Have a lighthearted conversation that is simple. I hate listening to long boring plugs on TV interviews.
2. Make points about how gaming is not just for the kiddies anymore.
3. Have a funny gaming story to tell.
4. Try to see if you can pull some strings with an affiliated company (EB, Outpost, Gamestop, etc.) to have a new sports title for 10-15% off for a few days to get sport gamers to sign up for the site.
Good luck Cheapy

A few things you could also mention (if not already) apart from the companies and retailers that we get deals from, you could mention how CAGs tend to find ways to trade or sell hardware and games to other fellow CAGs.
We tend to give each other heads up on reviews, opinions, strategies, and even daily news that, although might not be relevant to gaming directly, it sure keeps us entertained.
Good luck and make sure your fly is up! :D

My suggestion would be to never pre-order a game unless you get some added benefit (i.e. free guide or tshirt). Otherwise you set yourself up for a guarenteed $50 purchase.
Also, like it was mentioned, if you can wait about a month someone is bound to discount the game just a little and you can save a couple of bucks. Buying on release day is dumb.

Ok, there has been a change in plans!
I'm taping tomorrow morning.
We are no longer talking about game shopping, but are now doing a straight up preview of NBA Street 3 and FIFA Street (which I played today).
Also, they are a little weary with the "ASS" so we are going with www.CheapyD.com
If I play my cards right (and don't choke) hopefully ill be back!
See I was wondering about that... this has a more general feel to it, which could be very good for you. If Cold Pizza sees its key demo as people that love videogames, and you go over well with the viewership, they could possibly have you on in a recurring basis... which would be great for you.... plus, CheapyD.com could end up being more than just a simple redirector to Cheapassgamer. Considering what you've posted, you obviously have personality... hopefully you have stage presence as well.
It would be great for you if this could become a normal thing.
Not only do you get hits for your site, you'll probably get on lists for press copies of games for developers and somesuch.
I mean heck, look at the tools they have on G4... you couldn't be any worse than them :)

As long as those lurkers and hoarders click CheapyD's links, they're good for the site. May not be good for you, but they're good for the continued operation of the site.
And yeah, your talking points sound fine. They're common sense to us, but like you said, you won't be addressing the typical CAG.

I thought this show was 2 hours, you only had a 2 minute segment? Good thing I didn't get up that early, phew. GOOD CALL ON NHL STREET. EA or not, if this was on XBox and was on Live, i'd throw down $50 for it in a heartbeat. Good job.

I turned it on at just the right time. The dude kept talking about sports franchises getting sallowed up but forgot to mention EA started this mess. Also your voice is so deep.

Having played video games so many years with Mr. CheapyD.......I new that he would slip in a reference to the NHL somehow.....hahaha.
Great job......I can't remember when you've been that clean shaven.
However, I do think that the light gleaming off your head was a plot by EA and ESPN to hypnotize viewers into buying NBA Street........which I did later that day.
Mwahahahahaha!!!

I haven't read the 12pgs of this thread, so maybe this was the gameplan all along, but you didn't seem like you knew much. That other guy wasn't great but still blew you away. You should have been more prepared to really put yourself out there...Maybe next time.

If his goal was plugging the site, he probably failed, but I don't think thats why he was there. He didn't look terribly out of place, he looked like just another guy that you'd see on G4 or anywhere. He looked a little nervous, but we'd notice that more than anyone else, since we're watching him and not the show. As for not knowing much, this wasn't exactly politics, he did what was asked of him and made some good points. I don't think I would have been able to look that good on national TV.
A lot of people would have just said that the soccer game was great, since everything EA touches is gold. Even the other guy couched his comments a little bit.
I'm sure if he wanted to, he could use this to get more spots on cable, something like G4, maybe one of the shows thats getting cancelled soon. He didn't look nearly as stupid as some of the people on that station. He did fine for someone who isn't on TV regularly, or was never on TV before.

Not only did Sundance outperform me on air, but after the show, he kicked my ass in the parking lot and stole my bike and my socks.
Seriously though, I know there is lots of room for improvement, but I was fairly satisfied with my performance. I hope I get the opportunity to work on my skills.
Thanks for watching.

Well if you would have read the entire thread, you would have realized that the original segment was going to be a discussion about buying videogames (and obviously getting a good deal):
The fine folks at ESPN2's Cold Pizza were kind enough to invite me on their program to discuss video game shopping, epecially online shopping.
That was scrapped and they decided to go with a preview of the new EA "street" games; quite a change in subjects. Cheapy is not a game reviewer, he is, to quote the Coen Brothers, the paterfamilias of CAG.
Given the situation he was put in, I think he did a great job. Hopefully they will bring back the cheap-ass buying topic so Cheapy can go back on CP again.

I just watched the feed and I thought Cheapy did great. I also didn't read all 12 pages of this to see what others thought. Sure, the Sundance guy talked more and got to get more in depth, but he's the regular and Cheapy's the guest. Cheapy did a good job of shutting up when he was clearly supposed to.
By the end of it, though, the two of you were starting to look more and more alike to me.
Hope they have you on to straight-up plug your site some time.

02-11-2005, 09:40 PM
thanks for jumping on me. Not sure why he would go on Cold pizza to talk about buying video games cheap. I agree he made good points, but there definitely could have been more. I like the direction though of his dialogue though. Anyhoo, nice job for a 1st timer.
And to the haters, not everyone watching the show visits cheapass and reads the 12pgs of support. I gave an objective view from my perspective. Didn't mean to be harsh at all cheapy, but I'm not here to waste my time and be the 100th person to make a comment about your bald head.
btw, this cheapass name must be a pain in the butt for you by now!

I think the only problem with the segment is that it was too short. Sure it's a sports show and everything, but you could see there were two gamers there just dying to talk at length about the issue of sports gaming and there was only 2 minutes or so to cram everything in.

Cheapy was doing at least one thing completely right that the other guy was doing completely wrong: talking down to the audiences level. Basic sports gamers dont care about the rest of the industry. Cheapy got some points about the games accross, while the other guy was throwing out things about the EA merger, something that no one outside of gaming gives a crap about.

Looks like I'm going to be back on this week (Week of 2/21/05) to talk about Gran Turismo 4 and MVP Baseball 2005 (I had a chance to play both last week).
Taping is tomorrow (Wednesday) and it will likely air Thursday, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
