I know that Firefox is its own independant browser and that Avant is a shell on IE but what else is different? Which would you recommend?

I'm giong to put a poll on this just to see the tally for which is recommended more.

Hint: any IE-derived browser is likely to inherit all of IE's security flaws.

I haven't tried Avant but Firefox has kept me happy so I'll go with that.

 Yaeh I know but most of the reviews I read for Avant say that most of the problems seem to be fixed or not to occur as much. Just wanted to hear what the people on CAG say though.

I use Avant Browser as my primary browser. I like the way it handles tabbed browsing better than Firefox. It saves your tabs every time it closes, so you can pick up browsing where you left off (even when your system crashes or loses power) or leave pages you visit frequently open for viewing. You can drag and drop your tabs and group/order them any way you like. You can set each tab to refresh at a set interval to get the latest news or file on a site. You can arrange your favorites to appear any way you like as well, or have it sort them for you.

My favorite feature is URL aliasing, where you can replace any URL with anything you want. For instance, I have type cag in the address bar and it takes me straight to www.cheapassgamer.com. You can also alias searching, such as typing g cheap games, which will bring you results for cheap games in google.

You can set it to block pop-ups, ads, pictures, movies, flash, scripts, java, or active X, with an exceptions list for the things you need.

It has support for mouse gestures (hold the right mouse button and drag left to go back, etc).

It also has a built-in RSS reader, but I prefer using an external RSS reader.

It's faster and more stable than vanilla IE and blocks more pop-ups.

Sure most of these things are found in Firefox too, via plug-ins, but I've had a hard time finding everything I want for it.

Firefox has Live Bookmarks.
"Live Bookmarks is a new technology in Firefox that lets you view RSS news and blog headlines in the bookmarks toolbar or bookmarks menu." I'm not big enough into RSS to really use a dedicated RSS reader [although I did dl/install Abilon.]
I've been using Firefox for years and love it. I've tried one IE overlay, and didn't like it, but it was quite some time ago.

I use Avant Browser. I agree with all the things radjago said above.

I used to use Avant but recently switched to Firefox. I also like the way Avant handles tabs better and has buttons to toggle stuff like flash and popups on the toolbar right from the get-go. What I DIDN'T like is how much Avant loved to lock up on me, or better yet when it would take several minutes for it to load a page after I had woken it from sleep mode, whereas Firefox doesn't give me those issues. Maybe later versions of Avant fixed these things but unless Firefox starts to annoy me I'll probably just stick with it.
