If you are using a credit card, most double the standard warranty for free.

Whichever one permits you to hit the sales clerk in the head (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/comic/comic1.php).

actully the guy i spoke with in the store was amazingly nice and helpful, and even knocked 30 bucks off the price for me.

doest matter at all. Just check with your credit card company and make sure they offer a double warrenty. You have to put the entire purchase on the card. The warrenty works like this. During the free extended warrenty period, you pay for the repairs, then submit the bill to your CC company and they cut you a check. AMX paid me back for my CD changer that crapped out on me during my move. Saved me $150 on repairs.

hmm, not sure about that one. There should be a 800 number on the back of your card, give them a call and find out.

ok heres how it worked...every time i would mention that hp had cheaper warranty prices, or that i couldnt affor the 2 year plan ($240) this guy was squirming and kept lowering the price of the notebook to get me to buy the screen warranty!
i could tell he wanted his commision so i kept playing along for a while and we ended up with an agreement of the laptop for $530 if i bought the $240 warranty. which i was more than happy with because i walked in the store ready to plunk down 750 on just the notebook, 2 years of accident protection for $20 extra is just icing on the cake ^^
i have to beef up the ram a bit tho, theres only 512 with 128 ot it being shared with the video card, so actully 384...but its a p4 2.8 so it runs pretty smooth on just that...anyways thanks for all your help guys!

Wait...on that warranty thing, is that standard practice for most credit cards? I didn't know about that. Please enlighten us some more. Thanks.

Excellent job punq. You paid the same and got more. Most credit card companies do offer more benefits than you would think. American Express is the best one with additional benefits. Just call the 800 number on the back of the card and ask. You will be surprised at what they can offer.

I just bought a laptop over the weekend for $1,706.
Compaq Presario X6000 for $1379-$30 rebate+$199.99 (3 yrs warrenty)+taxes = $1,706 @ frys.
At first I didn't want to buy the warrenty, but the salesman was convincing my dad to get it. My dad then told me he will chipped in $1,200 and I chipped in the rest, only if I agreed to buy it with a warrenty. so yeaah, I took it. I had to cough up $500. There goes my PSP.

You definitely got pressured into buying the extended warranty. They're like bulldogs when they're trying to push the warranty on you. I wouldn't buy the warranty, especially for a 2 year plan on a $530 laptop, because in 2 years, the value of your laptop is basically at the level of the $240 cost of your warranty. All that said, a laptop is one of the only things I'd even consider an extended warranty for, depending on the fine print on the number of dead pixels they'd consider serious enough for an exchange/repair.
