So I was browsing through Gamestop yesterday and I noticed a hand written trade-in sign.

Trade in Madden 2004, receive $12 store credit and get Madden 2005 for $40.29.

I agree. Not because liking or playing this game is somehow wrong, even though I don't care for it. But the idiots that trade in last year's game for $5 towards this year's slightly changed game with roster updates (oh yeah, that costs a full $50 too!) are really, really stupid and keep the EA "minimal innovation/effort, maximum profits" model going. I can't believe the numbers of people that do these kind of trade-ins, and they certainly are just asking to be ripped off.

Really... I haven't seen any Madden churches around. Maybe its part of the non-denominational service.

I don't get the killing Jews connection Mr. Unoriginal? Maybe you watched the new South Park episode.

What's up with hating things that are popular/ mainstream on these boards lately? Personally, I like Madden the video game, think Madden the person is an idiot, dislike Titanic (unless there's girls around) and haven't killed any Jews myself. Its a damn game, like any other game, either you enjoy it or you don't. I don't see how more free-thinking you can get with that.

In fact that's pretty hypocritical in itself to form the opinion that a game sucks or has its own sexual preference just because a good number of people like to play it.

'Nuff said.

My point was that just because 50 million people buy the game doesn't mean its the best game ever. Lots of people have done lots of things, such as watching titanic and the holocaust and that doesn't mean anything. I'm obviously not comparing a Madden fan to the holocaust directly but just the 'everyones doing so its right' mentality.

What I find ironic is that the majority of the people who frequently bash Madden (or any sports title for that matter) don't actually play Madden. (Five minutes does not count.) You have no place voicing your opinion if you don't even know what the fuk you are taking about.

That being said, Madden was not the best football game 3 times in its history. The first time was when the first Gameday hit the scene. The second and third times were when Sega released NFL 2k1 and 2k2 on Dreamcast. Unfortunately. the latter two did not have the exposure they needed and therefore were dismal flops in terms of sales. Since then, Madden has reigned supreme.

And this trade-in deal is still just as lame as it was when I posted it. :)

Tecmo Super Bowl was a great game.

I sold my Madden the week of the Super Bowl and got 30 dollars for it. I played it non-stop, but I became addicted to Morrowind, and I knew I would be craving the next edition in August when it gets here. I am hoping they add some of the features EA put in their baseball game. Things like managing your practice squad and NFL Europe players would be a great addition to owner mode. Also, team chemistry would add a new dimension to it all.

don't hate on madden. just cause they outperformed and outclassed every other football videogame developer doesn't mean you have to piss all over them. look, the fans have spoken. ESPN gave madden the best shot they had, and madden still outsold it 14 to 1. call it brainwashing, call it whatever you want, the bottom line is if it were that easy to convince people to give you $50 we'd all be multi-gajillionaires. get over yourselves and stop hating on the biggest and greatest 3rd party videogame company in the history of the world.

dude, did you ever think they AREN'T blindly throwing away their money? did you ever think that they honestly and seriously LIKE madden? come on man, not everyone buying madden is a successful business man that makes 80k a year and has money to throw around. i remember when i was a kid i had to scrounge up money for weeks and weeks to be able to afford a $50 game, and i know there are still kids and peeps out there like that. you think they're just going to chuck that hard earned money away on a crappy product? the answer is no. EA delivers a quality experience everytime, and that much is guaranteed. what more do you want? true, you pretty much know what you're getting when you get madden (there are no outrageous changes to the gameplay engine every year, although there are sublte changes) and i think that is a good thing both for people who like and dislike madden. you don't like it? don't buy it. there are plenty of people who actually enjoy the game

I don't dislike the people that play Madden because I hate the game. I dislike those people because they're willing to spend $50 to get what's basically the same game with minor updates. For all you Madden haters: Why is it so bad? You've said multiple times how much you hate it but I haven't seen one reason for far as to why it sucks and is so "gay". Oh it sucks because it sells so much? Well that's a bit counter-intuative. I would argue if it's good it sells and if it sells they make more copies.

daphatty
04-07-2004, 09:54 AM
To expand upon what gamefreak is saying, here's a classic example of what happens to a good sports game that goes bad.

Gameday.

First release of the game was awesome. Blew Madden away. Subsequent releases were a different story however. As people saw Gameday get worse and worse, they stopped buying it. If Madden had the same problem (which most of you Madden haters seem to believe) then it too would have the same fate as Gameday. This is simply not the case.

EDIT: Of course, this is WAY OFF TOPIC.

People who are willing to buy the same product twice are morons and need to be removed from our gene pool as quickly as possible.

1. I buy both ESPN Football (and have every year since NFL2K) and Madden every year. I guess that makes me twice as moronic? I'm a huge fan of pro football, playing a game with outdated rosters just isn't the same. One of the high points of the year videogame-wise for me is when pro football season starts and the new football games are out.

2. I prefer Madden's gameplay. Sega will fix a bunch of things with their game every year, while at the same time introducing a whole new set of glitches. Madden 2004 is darn near perfect, I've sunk dozens of hours into that game. I just wish Madden had Sega's presentation, or Sega had Madden's gameplay.

3. Your post is the most self-righteous thing I've read in weeks. Who are you to knock what people like to play? I think Anime is the dumbest shit ever, MTV should be taken off the air, and people who buy the Halo XBox "just because it's cool" are making a stupid financial decision, but I don't go spouting off about it because what other people do with their entertainment time and dollars is *none of my business*.

I can see where you're coming from - as a non-basketball fan, I'm perfectly happy playing NBA Inside Drive 2003 today when I want a basketball game fix - but give us football fans a break.

I wouldn't mind madden so much if, right after the new one came out, we didn't have 30 people coming to trade it in and expecting to get $25 for it while managing to complain to me about it. You'll be lucky to get about $7 at that point, so take it before it goes to $1. or keep it.

That cracks me up. I usually end up giving my "last year" football titles away to broke family members. My brother in law will happily play a 1 or 2 YO Madden, but he MUST own the newest NCAA Football the day it comes out. Which I think is odd, because NCAA doesn't even have the player's names, right?

I should append my earlier post by saying that updated rosters isn't the only reason I run out and buy the newest ESPN and Madden every year. If that was the case, I would just keep updating rosters using an Action Replay, lord knows there are plenty of football sites which offer rosters for old games. Nah, it's a tradition, just one of the things that gets me pumped for football season.

04-10-2004, 03:15 PM
Not to mention that each year's edition improves glitches, tweaks, graphics, adds new modes, and gets closer to becoming a more accurate sim. I think most of us understand that sports titles just don't hold value, so any type of trade-in seems okay to me. But I do understand people getting upset about it. When Gamestop only buys it for $7 and then sells it preowned for $40, I feel a little ripped. 30% seems fair to pay for my game eh? I personally want the most updated game myself. I enjoy Madden more than any other games, and it is not silly to buy a new one each year. You might as well call everyone who wants the new Gran Turismo, new DDR, or new GTA moronic as well.

BTW, for the gamestop employee, don't focus too much on things that you can't change, just try to make your customer's experience better. After all, it is just a job. Go there, do what you gotta do, and go back to your real life. It's a good attitude to take to keep from being frustrated by things that you can't change.
