My computer is running about ten different forms of some program called svchost.exe. I have no idea what this is, and it's hogging a decent amount of memory. I'm trying to figure out what's taking up so much memory, cause I have a gig of RAM and a 2.6 GHz Pentium IV, so it shouldn't be this screwed up. It'll become uber-slow randomly, and I'm not really doing anything intensive. I was downloading some stuff and I was checking out the folder it was downloading into, so I don't know if that could be it. But I'm also curious about this svchost.exe program.

SVCHOST deals with processes running from DLLs. It's normal to see multiple instances of it running. However, if one is taking up a lot of CPU time, you might have a virus or some form of malware.

do a quick search and see if there are copies of svchost.exe in other directories besides /windows/system32. If there are, then you probably have some type of worm, trojan, or virus. Are you running a firewall? I had a lot of problems with this due to MacAfee Internet Suite software but none after removing it completely.
I had a similar problem after installing my Lexmark printer software. Have you intsalled anything recently?

Well, I did recently install a printer, which happened to be a Lexmark. And I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but it appears that my explorer.exe file is getting humongous as far as taking up system usage. It starts at 10,000 k, but by the time my computer gets really laggy and slow, it's up to around 121,000 k. I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware, and they apparently did nothing for this, as it happened both before and after running them.
