My family goes to several yard sales starting in the early spring and many of them have cheap games. Question is, what should I be looking for that usually sells for much more? I know Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance and Marvel vs Capcom 2, but what about others? I don't care what system or how old the game is. If it's desirable, please post it here. Thanks. Heres hoping for a sealed non-GH Final Fantasy VII.

That question will give you a very broad answer. There are many games that will be worth your $1 - $5, especially those older games. If you grew up reading magazines like GamePro and Nintendo Power, you'll know the ups and downs for most of the games released. I started out w/ SNES so I know which SNES games are good, which are crap; but I would have a hard time figuring out the games for NES and Sega Master system and even older ones. Not many current generation games out now will fetch you more than $50 if you resell them on, say, eBay. For older games, its more trial and error if you know next to nothing about them.

My advice is, if the games are non-sports under $1, get them. Otherwise use your best judgement; ie. RPG = usually a good buy.

The odds of even finding recent games at yard sales is remote, much less a game like Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

I'd recommend looking for older SNES games. As SOSTrooper said, if it's an RPG, it's probably pretty good.. A lot of people don't realize the value of some older games, so you might even run across your Final Fantasys and Earthbound and etc.. but I agree, most games are worth at least $1. Another game that the average gamer doesn't realize is rare is Harvest Moon 64, so keep an eye out for that.

You should look for games and systems you want to play.

Yeah, look for older stuff. I hate, I mean HATE garage sales.....but I might check a few out this spring and summer. My love for games overrides my hatred for garbage...i mean garage sales.

final fantasy VII SEALED at a garage sale?!?! In what sort of mystical magic place is it EVEN POSSIBLE to find such a thing at a garage sale, let alone LIKELY?!?!?

I think it's already hard trying to find an opened FFVII greatest hits at garage sale. The chances of finding rare games is next to none. But I'm sure there are plenty of Madden 2002 and Surf H3O.

Metal Gear Solid Substance is rare?

Try finding a NES top-loader, those are pretty hot.

FYI: Suburban garage sales are a good place to meet women.

It's only fitting that the guy who said Pryzm has been banned. I'm not talking "rare," I said desirable. I don't think any game is really rare, but many are desirable. How about Mega Man 6 on NES, Suikoden 1 and 2 on PS1, Disgaea on PS2, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on Xbox. A little help please.

By desirable do you mean games that will go for a high price on ebay?

I can't really help you on what to look for to make money on ebay. But, if your just looking for fun stuff to play cheap, your best bet is to do a bit of research. Look for games talked about on the classics board. Also, be willing to take a chance. If something is $3 and it has an interesting title, give it a chance. It might royally suck, but it might be fun, even if others don't like it.

I did this with my Dreamcast. I had a few extra bucks, and saw a space shooter that looked interesting. It was $7, so I bought it. The game is Armada, and it ended up being fun, and well worth the money. But, if I only got games that I knew about, I wouldn't have bought it.

I really think you're expecting too much. You probably have a better chance getting a girl's number at a yard sale than finding MvsC2 or the Suikodens. If you're trying to make a few bucks off of yard sales games and resell them back online, then I suggest you seek alternative methods for making money off games. Yard sale is good for piling games on your shelves for picture bragging purposes; it takes too much time and energy just to find 'rare' games, and the outcome is not even guaranteed. If you really want the rare games in your collection, just do eBay, at least you'll know you're getting a copy even if you have to pay more.

I hope I do get some girls' phone numbers. I'm not necessarily looking for ebay fodder because I know there are several guys on here who would take exception to that. I'm more looking for games that I would be able to trade on cag for things I want. Thanks anyway.
edit: either my emoticon didn't work or I've got them turned off. Pretend that's a picture of a laughing face after the first sentence.
