yea, i basically have the same question, but with their game copier. i have suikoden 2 and hate using the original disc in fear that it'll get damaged.

btw, here's a random question. is it legal to copy games that you bought? i'm thinking about making a backup copy to all my games b/c i'd be a$$ed out if the real version was damaged and i paid for it.

i have both... work well, but i had some problems in the begining during installation. The customer support was decent and they walked me through it. They work well, and it is not illegal to "back up" movies and games you own... it is illegal to copy movies and things that you rent, or that are not yours.... but who would do that? ;)

hmm, you might be able to buy the live-action movie from an anime site (rightstuf.com) or try ebay. if not, some older ma & pa stores might be your answer :) i only saw a little bit of the live-action. is it any good? same storyline as the anime?

I tried to get around paying for dvd x copy, But i used a trial version and went straight to walmart and paid my 50 dollars. I would be careful because the new software, done not incude the ripper. I bought my copy 3 days before they pulled it off the shelf. PS I got flamed on here for tring to get a cd key for a bootleg version. check out this link

If you are only making copies of DVD movies, you're better off getting DVD Shrink and using Nero to burn. DVD Shrink uses Nero as a burning plugin almost, lets you rip, edit (and re-author if you want), then burn a DVD movie.

Can't speak for game backups though. Don't you need a modchip or something to play them anyways? Seems too involved.

I was wondering if Game X Copy was good too. Currently I use Nero and when I run my PS2 backups, the loadings times are loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong. So can someone please tell me if GXC is good for burning PS2 backups too?
THANKS IN ADVANCE!

From what I understand Game X Copy doesn't copy ps2/xbox games, only pc games.

I have Alcohol 120% for burning ISOs, BINs and such. I noticed that when you go to burn an image, you can select what copy protection to put on the disc. The options include Playstation and Playstation 2. Not that I'd condone such a thing...

Actually it is only legal to backup games if there is no copy protection. They just ruled that DVD X Copy is not legal because of the DCMA and the key cracking the software does.

If you want to make back-ups of your movies DO NOT go out of your way to get DVD X Copy. All you need is DVD Decrypter and DVD Shink. Both fo these programs can be found in the Dark Tips section on Tech TV's website.

As for games, Alchohol 120% works well, but I also suggest CDR-Win for PSone games and Disc Juggler for Dreamcast. Apparently, I have heard that Nero works great for PS2 games, never ventured that route though.

Uh, I don't understand most of this and failed when trying to get some bootleg Dreamcast games. I'd REALLY appreciate it if someone PM'd me or contacted me on AIM and explained alot of this stuff to me.

I have DVD xCopy Express and it doesn't work at all. I have at least 150 DVD's and it will not copy any of them.

I bought this to make backups of the kiddie movies because little hands invariably scratch, drop and abuse the discs beyond playability and it would be nice to not have to buy Shrek and Pokemon for the 3d and 4th time.

Every DVD I've tried to copy gives me the nefarious "Cannot copy this DVD....it has so-and-so- copy protection encryption.

The FREAKING BOX SHOWS SPIDERMAN THE MOVIE DVD AS THE EXAMPLE OF A BACKUP !!!!!! yet I am unable to make a backup of MY LEGALLY PURCHASED LICENSE OF SPIDERMAN!!

Am rather upset, as you may have guessed, because this stupid thing cost me $69.95. This is false advertising and I'm pissed.

Okay smartypants, name the courtcase that says owning a backup of your DVD is illegal...........?

last I checked the line in the sand is still nebulous. Although the recent ruling on selling the software to obtain a backup (made by 321 studios, called Xcopy) was ruled to be an infringement, I don't believe they actually decided that owning a backup copy of your licensed material is illegal in any and all circumstances. Certainly there are reasonable arguments for 'fair use' of a purchased license. Nobody here seems to be advocating piracy, only the protection of our interests.

I could be wrong, though, it's happened at least once before in my life. I haven't read the wording on the court decision in the Xcopy case, just the news reports of the case.

All I know is that if it were up to the industry each game or dvd would have drm and we would have to pay everytime we wanted to play or watch.

well. that's the truth. That's what will happen if the trend towards downloadable games continues.

Can you imagine being charged everytime you read your favorite book? Listened to your favorite CD?

Yeah, sorry to reiterate this Defender, but it's fairly well understood that only the copyright holders actually 'hold originals'. We hold licenses. Everything we purchase is actually a 'copy' of an original work held by the owner. So, the line again is blurred between original and copy, copy and license.

Let's say a publisher makes a bad run of DVD's and for some reason they deteriorate after 2 or 3 uses and they become unplayable. The company refuses to reimburse you or replace your copy of the work even though it may be the company's fault to begin with. Granted, nothing can be guaranteed to last forever, but there is a reasonable expectation by the consumer that this DVD should last more than 3 plays since it was not specifically stipulated in the contract ( point of purchase) that it would only play 3 times and then quit working. "Fair use" and "Reasonable" are two terms that are not as strictly defined as your statement of absolute and all encompassing certainty that "BACKUPS ARE ILLEGAL".

It's just not that simple. If it were, then there wouldn't be any need for courts at all, we'd just be mindlessly following Big Brother's diction and not question the judgement thrust upon us. In this case, the judgement of the production companies is one copy, one license, if you screw it up too bad. If this were true in all cases, then Xerox would have gone out of business a long time ago. And you would never have a scanner attatched to your computer, or a VCR to tape your favorite shows, or Tivo, or cassette tapes, or harddrives for that matter. one copy, no backups, no more, no less.
