View Full Version : Dual Shock 3 or something different?

Do you think we will just get a DS3 with the PS3 or will Sony go the way of Nintendo and redesign the controller? I almost wish all three companies would standardize the controllers so ports wouldn't be so lame sometimes. I think the ideal design would be the Dual Shock 2 with Nintendo's analog stick and the D-pad and left analog stick swapped. What do you think?

I read in PSM I believe that the new controller will have at least 2 new buttons to take advantage of as of yet announced "new features".

Sony makes the best controller of all three systems, so I would be happy if it remained similar to the DS2.

Move the left analog stick and perhaps the back two triggers to somewhere more ergonomic. And tighten up those damn sticks. Horrendous.

I really like the current DS2 a lot. I hope they don't try to force two many buttons on there and ruin it.

It should be wireless

I think Sonys controllers are the best too. I have a mini controller, and with the shoulder buttons they pushed the bottom set in farter, it makes it much easier to feel where you are and nicer to hold.

Most pc devolpers are coping Sonys design as well for their controllers.

Geek note- In Men In Black II, Will Smith used a ps2 controller to fly the car =)

sony's gotta do something about that d-pad if they want decent 2d fighting game controllers. however given the fact that there aren't really gonna be too many 2d fighters for next gen, I doubt that they'd care.

I really like the DS controllers, so I hope they don't mess with it too much.

Sonys is to small.

It's not the size of your controller, it's how you use it.

Or maybe: More than a mouthful is wasted.

They need to do alot to fix it ... right now it's useless for FPSs and racing games.

Use the analog sticks, that's what I always use for most games that allow the right stick to be used for movement.

Yea... the xbox controller is marginally better... the right stick seems tighter or more accurate than on the PS2.

That's not quite right. If you have pretty big hands, it's kind of hard to hold a dual shock controller. Like when I'm holding it with my thumbs on the d-pad and the face buttons, the end of the handles are in the middle of my palms, which is not very comfortable. My hands aren't even all that large, so it's probably even harder for other people.

The Gamecube controller and Xbox controller S don't have this problem for me, though both still feel a little small.

I would probably say it's more than marginally better. the PS2 analogs aren't as responsive as xbox or gamecube.

Sony needs to switch the left joystick and the D pad for the DS3. Other then that I don't think that the DS2 is too bad for most games.

My favorite controller is the PS2, favorite analog is the XBOX, and I don't like the GCN controller at all and I have no idea what they were thinking when they designed it. It feels like they just threw something as obnoxious as possible just to be different. It looks like it was designed by a 5 year with lego blocks.

Regardless I have beaten a few games on the GCN like Mario Sunshine, ToS, and all of the RE games including 4, but I always felt uncomfortable using it :P

The sticks are horribly lose. I'd like to see how Super Monkey Ball turns out on the PS2. It's just the worst sticks of the three.

And it needs triggers, too for racing. Make two of the shoulders triggers and move the other two to be more where your middle fingers would fall naturally.

I can't understand why people don't like the GameCube controller but like the Xbox S controller, They are really similar.

The PS2 needs to swap the D-Pad and the Left stick and add triggers to the DS3. I don't need any more buttons.

2 Sticks
D Pad
L & R buttons
L & R triggers
4 Normal buttons (A, B, X, Y)
and Start & Select

Thats all I want

I think they need to be told how to hold them. Those things don't come with detailed instructions on where to put your fingers and how to hold the controller. I've seen people look at a Gamecube controller and not have any idea what to do with it.

On the other hand, an Xbox controller is pretty much as large as most people's hands, so there aren't very many ways to hold it improperly.

Exactly what I was thinking. I have this PC gamepad that has middle finger triggers and it works really well. And it's definitely good having two analog triggers for racing games, you don't even realize how useful that is until you actually play a racing game with analog triggers. Afterwards using digital buttons just doesn't feel right. 2 normal + 2 analog triggers is the way to go IMO, and throwing in 2 digital middle finger triggers is a nice addition, and really the only way to add more buttons without cluttering things up.

I can't wait to see this either. Super Monkey Ball is one of my favorite games of all time but I'm definitely passing on the PS2 version (at least until it's $20 or less) due to the controls... The GBA game was horrible...
