I would be surprised if it tookl 20-25 min. 40gigs and the drives spin slow. I say give it an hour.

Are you formatting to a PC?
If so, you might run into a small problem. When I got my regular 20 gig ipod, I let it format for like 15 minutes before I finally decided something had gone wrong during the process. But when I disconnected an rebooted, it said it was already formatted so IDK. You can take your chances like I did.

OK, I went to sleep and when I woke up my computer was rebooting itself but it was stuck at the startup screen. I hit ctrl-alt-delete to restart and it got stuck again in the same spot. Then I had to leave for work. Does anyone know what's going on?

crap. I should have tried the firewire connection instead of the USB... the instruction book that came with it sucks ass.

Yeah firewire is way faster than USB for data transfer

Firewire and USB2 are pretty close.

USB 2.0 is actually faster than firewire, that's why pretty much everything has dropped firewire now

I used usb2 (I think). I'm pretty sure the usb ports on the back of my brand new laptop are usb2... would they still put the regular usb ports back there? How can I tell?
iPods don't work with USB1... at least the normal ones don't. I don't even remember having to format my iPod... :?

If you go into device manager, and at teh bottom expand universal serial bus, it should say usb2 or something to the affect. If its new, then its got usb 2.0.

I think he means convertng the photos to a small to size to make 'em viewable... it took around 30 mins for around 700 photos for me. USB2.

Some Windows machines won't boot properly if the iPod is connected at start up. Try disconnecting the iPod, reboot, and see if that fixes your problem.
Here's an article from apple's site about the problem. Apparently there is a fix if you really want to keep your iPod connected at startup.
