I found this on the-magicbox.com and found it interesting:
"Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced they will begin to release videos in UMD format on April 19, four titles will be released initially, including "XXX", "Hellboy", "Resident Evil Apocalypse" and "Once Upon A Time in Mexico". Movies on UMD will be produced in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio and encoded using advance AVC compression. Additional titles will be released thereafter."

I hated XXX and Hellboy. It seems like im the only one who doesn't like XXX too. Other than that not bad.

You did read "Resident Evil Apocalypse", didn't you? Once Upon a Time in Mexico is the only decent movie in the lot. It's not even a good movie. It's kind of fun and cool, but in no ways is it good.

You aren't the only one...

XXX sucks.

Well, the movie at least! ;)

XXX was a waste. It gave XXX a bad name. Hellboy I enjoyed. But I really like the director, who also did Blade 2.

UMDs? It is ridiculus for Sony to want people to rebuy movies. At least they started with some great ones though.... (wait, that joke was already made  )

I'll get Hellboy, OUATIM, and RE: A even though I already own the last two movie mentioned.

Yeah I thought the selection was odd. Hey maybe we can have the Lord of the Rings on UMD... of course the PSP would probably run out of battery before the movies over.
IKIK, I'm really wanting a PSP even if it's got issues. Woot for new handhelds, love em all!

any idea on the price range?

I don't know price range. But on another note, this was also on the-magicbox.com website
"Sony announced they have developed a new lithium ion battery, which has 30% power than current batteries. Sony is planning to use the new batter in most Sony products, including notebooks, handhelds, video cameras and so on. PlayStation Portable seems to be one of the product to receive the new battery as well."
I'm researching more info on the UMDs but I can't find anything.

I did not like Hellboy when I saw it in the theatres, but when I saw the Director's cut I became a fan.

Pricing in Japan has been announced as approximately identical to DVD pricing, which makes it likely they'll have a similar price here.

Bad move, Sony.

the real qustion here is- exactly how long will it take for something worth watching to be released on UMD?

I like Vin Diesel in the right role but XXX was horrible. Hellboy was alright though, nothing great.

Hellboy was good as well.

RE Sucked, and to add to the fact XXX was not good, its freakin old.

Man, Sony is going to be pissing away a lot of money for a movie format that can only be played in one device.

RE Sucked, and to add to the fact XXX was not good, its freakin old. True, but with XXX2 coming out this year it's not hard to see why they're doing it.

Here some more info on movie releases and prices link (http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=filmNews&storyID=2005-02-17T031637Z_01_N16229473_RTRIDST_0_FILM-FILM-DAGGERS-DC.XML)
It seems House of Flying Daggers will also be released on UMD for a price of about $30.

So now the question is, are these the suggested list price or the suggested retail price? I mean if you look at most other DVDs the suggested list on them is usually between $20-$30 but they rarely cost more than $20. I'm really hoping the $19.95 is the suggested list price so that we could easily see them priced around $14.95 or so.

So far, all they've done is make Memory Stick prices more acceptable.

Once Upon A Time In Mexico is a kick ass movie, at least.

Desperado was much better. Rodriguez tried to run too many different plots lines in the third flick and lost most of the character the first two films had.

Score, House of the Flying Daggers looks cool, too bad it's so high priced... but I'm sure it will be lowered.

I didn't like House of Flying Daggers as much as I liked Hero. But still I'd rather buy the dvd than have to be confined to watching it on UMD.

Has there been any word if the UMDs are even going to have extras like DVDs?

I just seems really dumb to me to spend the same amount of money on a UMD then a DVD. A DVD can play in your Computer, DVD Player, Portable DVD Player, PS2 and Xbox. While the UMD is PSP only. Also DVDs have all these cool extras, they haven't said if the UMD will have them. But I think its unlikely given how small they are.

Does anyone else think the UMD is just going to be this generations BetaMax?

I think a smarter move for Sony would have been to scrap the whole UMD movie idea and put that money twords creating a iTunes like Movie store so you could download movies for your Memory stick.

Yeah it seems like UMD = MiniDisc = Beta
