Rockstar, Take 2, Gamestop, and Wal Mart are being sued because some 17 year old kid went crazy and shot and killed two cops. (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,147722,00.html)

Wow. I wish I had a kid. I would train him to walk in front of cars and then sue Konami for making those Frogger games.

Or maybe if games really do change your personality, I should have my son play NBA2K5... maybe he'll turn into Ben Wallace.

If the "Videogames directly influence the behavior of players" has any validity to it, than I should have already taken out entire armies, conquered the galaxy, slayed dozens of dragons, and rescued thousands upon thousands of princesses.

"What has happened in Alabama is that four companies participated in the training of Devin ... to kill three men," attorney Jack Thompson told The Tuscaloosa News, which reported the suit's filing.

Training? Fuck that guy.

There might be some truth to that. I've played at least 2,000 games of Tetris since I was 10 years old. In those 13 years, I've been arrested eight times for macliciously stacking innocent people. Think I have a lawsuit against the country of Russia?

Man, I think I'm going to make that my new quote "life is a video game; you gotta die somtime"
But seriously, as much as I dislke GTA, this is not a kid, he was 17, almost 18. He knew what he was doing and he knew it was wrong. To say a game makes you do something is just stupid.

If you do, this guy does as well. (http://videos.somethingawful.com/mega64/tetris.mpg)

What's really frustrating about shit like this is that it is often initiated by the accused in an attempt to pass the blame.

It's sad that all this focus is placed on GTA and none on teh fact that he was able to get a gun so easily. I'm sure it took the addition of GTA to get him to realize that he could point it at people.

They shouldn't blame a shitty game like GTA.
They should blame shitty parents for lack of discipline.

Damn it, someone blame True Crime already. No one's blamed that damn game yet.

The kid got a gun, shot cops. Don't blame the parents who didn't teach him right or wrong, or the school system that never taught him that people just don't disappear when they die and are replaced by chalk lines, or whoever gave him the gun...

They don't have a lawsuit for many reasons.

1. He was 17. Courts have long since established that seventeen year olds should know the difference between right and wrong. They certainly should know that guns kill and death is forever. If a 17 year old doesn't know that, he should be in a place that doesn't allow sharp objects and things that go 'pop.' I feel bad for the cops' families but the bottom line is you can't sue someone for making a product that depicts people doing bad things. If you could, John Woo would have the pants sued off of him.

2. They can't sue Wal Mart or Gamestop because I'm pretty sure that the ESRB isn't federally mandated, or at least wasn't in 2003. Even if it was, the kid was 17, not 13, so it's moot point.

3. If they really believe that GTA trained the kid to kill cops, then I hope to Christ that there isn't a kid out there trying to steal a tank or shoot helicopters out of the sky with a bazooka.

Haha, I was channelling my grandmother from the grave... but wait, she is not dead.

Maybe they should sue whoever wrote "I Shot the Sherrif"!

Well that depends. Did the kid shoot the deputy?

Rockstar, Take 2, Gamestop, and Wal Mart should be allowed to sue the kid's parents for wasting their time and tax payer's fucking money.

Why would they even sue in the first place? Every case like this I'm aware of has been tossed out of court. I guess the obvious answer is a magnitude of stupidity so large it's on the verge of collapsing in on itself.

This is why we need 'loser pays court costs' law to rein in idiotic litigation.

Because their lawyer is Jack Thompson, the shaq-fuing idiot that calls these games (including Halo and other FPS games) "murder simulators." The guy is a grade-A media whore who likes to get attention by suing videogame companies (especially Take Two). He has lost every single court case he has brought against a videogame company and yet he keeps doing this over and over.

Tetris has taught me how to efficiently store lots of stuff in limited spaces. I think this kids parents are 100% to blame for not parenting him properly. Just goes to show that some people should not be allowed to procreate. And that abortion should be legal to age 18... hehe.

I love how nobody has to take responsibility for their own actions anymore. It's not like you're an individual with the ability to think things through and make up your your own mind about anything. If you see anything violent in a movie, comic book or video game, it must be perfectly acceptable to reenact that violent act in real life, right? Maybe that little delinquent will enjoy being on the receiving end of some violence once he reaches prison.

This is going to keep going until someone wins, or until the hammer is brought down on this type of thing. I'm sure that this round of lawsuits is the least absurd comapred to what will come.

Used to be they sued metal and rock bands cause their kids were killing themselves and others... the video game industry is just the next big "cash cow" to try and pillage. Clearly, trying to make others responsible for your actions is just plain foolish!

That system has its own problems. Rich defendants can then scare off poor plaintiffs, even if the defendant might actually lose.

It's always someone else's fault! ](*,)

There are a lot of things that piss me off in this world, people blaming their actions on entertainment is just one more item on the list.

No offense to cops, but those cops in AL have to be the world's worst fucking cops. Somehow this 17 year old manage to get the jump on a cop, steal his gun kill 3 people and flee in a patrol car, while he was in a police station. First of all why wasn't he hand cuffed? Second of all what the hell were the other cops doing?

The cops in Los Angeles don't mess around. They'll beat you senseless for sneezing (at least where I live).

Some of the younger cops here play videogames also. Keeps 'em sharp.
