can you edit your live gamertag?

What to edit my gamer tag, is it possible. Ie change the spelling or whole name

Some games let you have a different in-game name, but you can't edit your gamertag name.

Nope, not unless you unsuscribe completely and then sign back up under a different gamertag.

Of course, you could always call XBox Live Support and see if they'd do it for you, but I've never heard of it happening on any occasion.

I think you might be able to by calling customer service, but I never tried it. When my subscription ran out, and I wanted to change my name from sj41 to STICKY WAFFLES, I just made a new account and cancelled my sj41 account.

I've only heard of people changing names if theirs is really close to someone elses or someone files a complaint about the name being offensive. In both of these cases, it's initiated by Microsoft. You could always try calling and say the name has brought you harrassment and threats from other Xbox live users and you just wanted to see if it could be changed.
