my old xbox was returned for defects about a year ago. it had all my cds on its hd. that xbox had the thompson. my new one has a samsung. i thought the samsung was supposed to recognize cd-r and mp3's.
i was trying to add some music to the xbox this afternoon, but the samsung drive xbox won't recognize some of my music that has been "backed up" onto cds. it rips the store bought cds just fine.
is the above info about samsung vs thompson drives correct or am i just a dumb ass?

No, they are correct. If you have your XBox on Live through a router you can pick up the XBox Music Mixer and transfer songs though that. Not the fastest thing in the world, but it works.

I picked mine up for $7.50 sealed with the microphone (not required) at Sears. EB sold them for fairly cheap, OOS on the site now, $10 or less B&M.
Or use CD-RWs. All Xboxes can read CD-RWs.
Samsungs should read CD-Rs, but maybe not the brand of CD-Rs you're using. I know some Xboxes do read CD-Rs but are very tempermental about the brand.
But, like I said, go CD-RW.

I have some legit CD-R's (like actual promotional discs straight from a record company, not a personally-burned backup) and the XBOX didn't read them. So I have to copy the audio from my PC back onto a CD-RW and then it works. I guess I have a Thomspson then??? It's weird, because the manufacturing date on my XBOX is July 24, 2004... I thought all the newer ones had Samsung?

that is really screwy. Ive heard of them not reading CDrw and reading Cd-r but never the other way around...

My samsung does not read CD-rs from what i can tell. i've tried a couple of different brands and none of them worked.
