Thompson, I think, was only in the intial run. I'm pretty sure most newer ones have Samsung, so there's nothing to worry about. Samsung or Phillips, I've heard that there's even a fourth drive, but to my knowledge, no new xboxes have the Thompson.

There's two different versions of the Phillips, if that's what you're talking about.

i dont think theres 2 different versions of the phillips. the new one which i got is a hitachi drive which is pretty much looks like and runs the thompson since it can't read cd-r's but reads cd-rws, dvd+r., and dvd-r

I'm actually pretty sure the newest ones use the phillip v2. Here's the thing: if you specifically want a thompson, you can go to sites that do naughty things to xboxes and they tend to make a huge database of xboxes based on mfc. date and can usually tell you based on the mfc. date and serial number (tells you production line and location of production) what drive is in the system. Worked for me, and I got a 6-18-03 xbox that was new and sitting in some EB and it has a samsung, the best. The clerk at the EB was so nice...in fact, the clerk at another EB id visited was even nicer. He called the store I ended up getting it from and asked the clerk there to check through the slot in the back of the box and check the mfc. date.
The clerk at the store I bought it from turned out to be the manager and a stand up guy. Good times.
Samsung is by far the way to go.
