You open yourself up to it though, by even posting.
There are many people who by thier very natures are skeptical.
Don't hurt yourself and your chances by just blindly flailing at one, when your actions in doing so could ruin your chances in getting more people to help your cause.
Just ignore them, and let those comments roll of your back.. you're obviously getting help from the majority.
Stay happy, stay polite, and just keep saying thanks and trying to get even more people to join in.. as they say, "You catch more flies with honey".

it says that you can only vote 1 time a day but if you can vote more than once that would be cool!!!!
Id be very careful with that. I could easily jack your numbers through the roof but I didnt because I dont want there to be even the HINT of wrongdoing. Sure, its a local TV news website but Im sure if you bombed them with a ton of votes all from the same IP, it would backfire on you. As I said, relax, youre doing fine as is and your clean. :D
I'm surprised nobody has questioned the validity of this story yet.

#2 by a landslide.
Couldnt have said it better myself. :applause: Kayden
Also, even if the kid is full of :bs: (and he seems about as far from it as possible) They still must be a deserving family. You know the station had to get 100s of requests and filtered out only the most deserving of the lot. Does it mean they are the MOST deserving of the four? Who knows. But I like this kid and his family so I dont feel bad if they win because they still are deserving, maybe even the most deserving. (theres a one in 5 chance that they are, right? :D )

So Sweeny cares about an IT company's skewed poll data but is willing to help out a new CAG by 'skewing' someone else's poll data.
I wonder how big of a soup kitchen they could sponsor with the $25k that's going to be spent on someone's new remodel............?

Like he said, I'd be a little careful if it isn't already too late. Just make sure this thread isn't breaking any rules, we don't wanna ruin it for you.
Please do not vote for his family’s kitchen if you do not honestly feels it needs remodeling the most. Don’t let him make you feel sorry for him and his family and let that sway your vote. I’m sure other families in the contest have it just as bad and need to win just as much. I hesitate to say need, because no one really needs a fancy kitchen, all you really need is one that functions.
To the Topic Creator: Please don’t come here asking us to help your family win a contest. Why don’t you help your own family by using you a percentage of you income to help refund you parent’s coffers, since they have major pecuniary issues. I’m sure that would help a lot more than going on some website, using a “pity story” to rack in votes to renovate your parent’s kitchen which doesn’t even look that bad. I am considering writing to Don Norman (don.norman@walb.com), the man in charge of WALB’s Public Services Department and explaining to him why your family skyrocketed into first, because something inside me tells me what you are doing is immoral, despite it being for a good cause.

Agreed.
I just think it's funny that some kid comes here and gives you a poorly typed sob story, and you all buy into it. Just because somebody posts on CAG a few times doesn't mean you owe him anything at all.
Even if the story about the OP's sister is true, I think it's a pretty underhanded way to win a new kitchen. Instead of exploiting her condition, why don't you get help for her? You think a shiny new kitchen is going to want to make her eat more? Please.
I'm thinking about starting up a new thread saying "Omg if you have a heart, you'll listen to my sad sad story. My little brother has lymphoma, and all he wants is a new PSP. It would bring so much joy into his little life, and if you had any human decency at all, you'd all paypal me $1 to try and get him closer to his dream."
And then if anybody questioned my story, I would cuss them out.
What a bunch of rubes.

Slightly off topic but for all of you people who voted for his kitchen just because of his story and are costing three families new kitches............please don't ever..... and I mean ever..... complain about someone going to TRU and buying 5 copies of a cheap game just to resell them later. You guys are such asswipes. Have a little faith in humanity. If his story IS true and his parents are really wiped out, then let enjoy something as meaningless as a new kitchen. As the OP put it, this is being done for the parents, NOT the sister. I would probably want my parents to have the same. And by the way, if you wrote that your brother had lymphoma, I would believe you and it would be my choice to help you or not. Why be so cynical and mistrusting? Don't be so mistrustful of people, it a poor way to live.....If they do lie to you, they are the ones that look stupid not you.

You know what's funny though trust? He's been here for 5 months longer than you, but before this topic, he's only had 3 posts. 1 was a joke, 1 was asking about magazine deals, and 1 was entering a contest. Everybody's treating this guy like he's some respected CAG, but the guy is a mooch. He's been here for over a year and contributed nothing. In that year he's made 26 posts, with 23 of them being in this thread.
I don't see how somebody who lurks around could garner so much reverence from other CAGs. He's contributed nothing, and has probably gained more than his fair share.
Yet everybody wants to help somebody who doesn't deserve it. Because he's a CAG? Maybe in the strictest of terms, but I think even that could be argued.

LOL. You are a "respected" CAGer based on the number of posts. You should try something like this then. I'm sure you'll get support.
By the way, I work in the medical field and do see a ton of stories that are sad and true. Maybe that's why I do tend to have some faith in people (wether right or wrong).

You guys are all missing a lot of points.
1. Now every random person in the world will think they can come here and start click this and help me threads. All they need to win you all over is 3 previous CAG posts and a sob story.
2. Once again, those other three people might have equally compelling stories.
3. This guy could have just made you all look like a bunch of idiots and is laughing all the way to his new kitchen. No it didn't cost you anything but a second to click, but I myself have too much pride to be taken advantage of by every con artist to come through.

Please do not vote for his family’s kitchen if you do not honestly feels it needs remodeling the most.
His situation. if it does exist does have some bearing on which kitchen would most be in need of the remodel.
Don’t let him make you feel sorry for him and his family and let that sway your vote. I’m sure other families in the contest have it just as bad and need to win just as much. I hesitate to say need, because no one really needs a fancy kitchen, all you really need is one that functions.
Everyone's house will always need to be fixed. But it's the people who can't do better for themeselves or that are in the most dire need that make the most compelling stories. Don't forget this is an effort spearheaded by a television station. You don't see Extreme Makeover home edition going to some middle class schlub's house just because he has disgusting panelling on the walls and hideous carpet and wallpaper.
The story behind the people is just as important as the state of the house and the work that needs to be done.
Please don’t come here asking us to help your family win a contest.
Why not? There are no rules stating that one cannot ask for others to help.
You can bet that the other people are asking thier friends and relations to vote for them... the internet just multiplies the number of people you can contact in a short amount of time exponentially.
People shouldn't be voting multiple times... that would be cheating.
But the family's situation is just as important as the look of thier kitchen when it comes to thier need for a remodel.
Why don’t you help your own family by using you a percentage of you income to help refund you parent’s coffers, since they have major pecuniary issues.
How do you know he isn't. That's a brash assumption you're making.
I’m sure that would help a lot more than going on some website, using a “pity story” to rack in votes to renovate your parent’s kitchen which doesn’t even look that bad.
His parents were already involved in the competition. To not go out and try to rally support would be foolish... it would be a great opportunity completely squandered.
I am considering writing to Don Norman (don.norman@walb.com), the man in charge of WALB’s Public Services Department and explaining to him why your family skyrocketed into first, because something inside me tells me what you are doing is immoral, despite it being for a good cause.
If he isn't telling people to cheat.
Anyways, the poll won't have as much bearing as you or the OP think it will have on the results.
If you notice the wording, it says "But first, it's up to you to help us decide which one!"
It doesn't say that the choice of the people is binding, or even the one that will be done. This will likely serve as but one metric that will play into the choice that the station will eventually make. Unless the other families have a more compelling story that the OP's family, it's likely that his family would get the remodel anyway.

How awful it would be if someone were to contact the news channel's General Manager and let them know the contest was rigged.

I just think it's funny that some kid comes here and gives you a poorly typed sob story, and you all buy into it. Just because somebody posts on CAG a few times doesn't mean you owe him anything at all.
I fail to see where the user has given reason to distrust him.
What he asks requires a trivial effort and has no real world cost to someone who would help.
Even if the story about the OP's sister is true, I think it's a pretty underhanded way to win a new kitchen. Instead of exploiting her condition, why don't you get help for her? You think a shiny new kitchen is going to want to make her eat more? Please.
The state of one's kitchen does not have any link to the quantity of food the consume or do not consume (depending on if it was anorexia nervosa or bulemia), especially since most recognized eating disorders have a psychological component that is the focus point for all treatment methods...the disorder itself is just symptom of the underlying psychological problem.
That is an entirely different situation. To help this poster costs the person wanting to help nothing. No money changes hands, and to vote takes a trivial amount of effort. The scenario you propose is rather different, as it requires a non-trivial effort by the people who might help, and it has a real world cost attached to it as well.
And then if anybody questioned my story, I would cuss them out.
What a bunch of rubes.

Go ahead and contact him. Of course, most of you that likely will contact him will bias the conversation with your venom and seemingly illogically hatred of the OP.

Do you see anything on the site that states formal rules?
How do you know if rules are being violated if you haven't read them.
If the site is on the public internet, and it's not locked in a restricted area, it is obviously for public consumption. Heck, the site itself has been programmed with a link to inform your friend via email of the site.
Apparently, they do want people to come look at it, even if they aren't from the local viewing area.
They themselves provide a method for the rapid distribution of information regarding this promotion across the internet...
Just because someone found a better way of soliciting votes doesn't change the fact that this type of functionality was available to all of the participant families.
Of course, I'm still not certain that the votes will even determine which kitchen the station does decide to renovate.

I know, that was my point. The state of their kitchen has no bearing on the sister's condition, so why mention her at all? Because it's for sympathy, and he's hoping that it'll make you click his link.

It hurts the other contestants, and makes the playing field uneven. If the reasoning behind the action is to "help somebody in need", how do you know that the other contestants aren't more in need? It's more of a moral problem then a financial one, so it doesn't matter if any money is needed. My problem is that I don't believe the situation regarding his sister (and even if it IS true, it shouldn't have been mentioned in the first place). If I were in a contest like this, and I REALLY wanted to win, would you look down on me if I made up a story about having cancer? What if one of the other contestants really DOES have cancer, yet we don't know about it? Sure, it doesn't cost anything for anybody to vote, but in this situation the cost wouldn't matter. The consequences for my lie about cancer could be morally troublesome, as I could've theoretically weasled a PSP out of the hands of a make-a-wish patient.

Yes, but it also has a bearing on the families' financial situation.
It provides a somewhat compelling reason for why this family would deserve the help.
If the OP did just make up the story, he's the scum of the earth.
If he didn't, he and is family are just some more people in need.
If they are truly in need, and the family got included in this, it's a good oportunity for them, and his posting this is his attempt to be sure that that oportunity wasn't squandered.
It hurts the other contestants, and makes the playing field uneven.
You don't even know how much this poll even counts toward the decision that will eventually be made by the station.
This does not make the playing feild uneven... it's a open contest, and the site itself makes obvious that the station wants this information distributed.
(It has a email forwarding link built in to it for goodness sake)
Why should the OP be penalized because he's found a more efficent way?
If the reasoning behind the action is to "help somebody in need", how do you know that the other contestants aren't more in need?
They probably are. But they aren't asking for help.
One person can only do so much... considering that the OP has posted that he is in need, he's the one more likely to get the help from those he requests it of, especially since all he asks is a trivial effort.
It's more of a moral problem then a financial one, so it doesn't matter if any money is needed. Yes, I would. I'd think you're the scum of the earth, and hope that you get some sort of reciprocation for your actions, be they of divine or human origin.
The same goes for the OP. Since he hasn't given a huge reason to doubt him, I'll opperate under the assumption that he is telling the truth..
if it comes out later that he was lying, I'd rip his threads to ribbons, call the station director and tell him about this scumbag that was playing on the emotions and decency of others to try to win thier contest, and I'd be sure to provide him with copious links of the scenario.
But as of yet, the OP's story has remained fairly consistant... and some people react negatively to questioning them, so I'm even granting him a degree of latitude about the few times he lashed out earlier in the thread.
What if one of the other contestants really DOES have cancer, yet we don't know about it?
You can't save everyone. That person hasn't asked for my help, so I'm not going to not help this person on the off chance that someone may be worse of than him. However, if there were a link to the situations of the people asking for help with thier kitchens and I did see someone in more dire straigthts than the OP, I'd have voted for them. Since that data isn't available, it's foolish to not help someone who has asked for your help because someone may be in a worse shape or more deserving. If you operate like that, you're far less likely to help people that actually do need help.
Sure, it doesn't cost anything for anybody to vote, but in this situation the cost wouldn't matter. The consequences for my lie about cancer could be morally troublesome, as I could've theoretically weasled a PSP out of the hands of a make-a-wish patient.
If it's a lie, yes. You can't prove the OP is lying.
If the OP is a liar, he's the scum of the earth. I've already said that multiple times. But I've yet to see a reason to believe that he is lying.
I think you missed this (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=837922#837922)
I think you missed the first couple pages. Scorch broached the majority of your more compelling questions, and his converstation with the OP didn't degrade to the point your comments got to, or lead to a halfhearted swipe at the entire CAG userbase.

If somebody asked you to vote for them, why not?
I wouldn't have voted anybody else because I didn't even know about the site :P
Somebody has to win, might as well be CAG.
Your kitchen is still nice though. Double oven, fully wood finished. No need to remodel something that looks fully functional.
My kitchen looks like crap =/
EDIT: Also, Option 4 looks bad. Like, out of the 70s bad. :o
EDIT: He mentioned the sister with eating disorder blah blah, right? It put his family into financial problems.
Now, couldn't he have just skipped the sympathy for sister and just stated, family has financial problems? Or would it have been different?
Of course, we could have been like GameFAQs and just voted for Option 4, since it does look like it needs the most help.

I never said what he was doing was against the rules, which is why I stated he may have nothing to worry about if anyone does contact Jim Wilcox. However even if something doesn't violate the letter of the rules it can still violate the spirit of the rules which is what I think is happening.
Also for whoever said I would bias it with my illogical hatred of the OP is wrong. I do not hate the Original Poster personally, I am simply against the Original Post. Jim Wilcox I am sure is an intelligent man that would simply hear what I had to say, look into this site if he so chooses, and make a decision based on that.
The only reason I do not contact him is a fear of retaliation against this site. I don't see Jim Wilcox attempting any action against CAG for this thread itself, but he may have a problem with kids (and there are many) constantly visiting a site with ass in it's name. Like I said he is probably an intelligent, fair man. But probably doesn't mean definitely. He may be a man open to taking rash and quick action in a case like this.
Aside from the contest, it amazes me how many people out there in CAG world are mindless sheep that will just click away on any link provided to them.
How awful it would be if someone were to contact the news channel's General Manager and let them know the contest was rigged.

One last thing that I don't think was brought across good enough:
The contest is about what kitchen needs to be remodeled most, not about which family needs it most. All of the votes from this thread were curried from the OP's sob story, and not from the actual kitchen condition.
That's my problem with it, and that's why I think it makes the playfield uneven. The whole purpose of the contest is thrown out the window. Instead of winning the kitchen because, you know, they NEED a new kitchen, they will be winning it because of a story that the OP made up. The contest doesn't say "vote for whichever family you like most", it says "vote for which kitchen you most think needs remodeling." This thread "throws off the data" if you will, and if the OP wins the kitchen, it will be as ill-gotten as the people that receive the $15 BB GC from the other thread (as JSweeny put it).
Wow, I seem to have struck a nerve for so many of you... Perhaps I wouldn't have been so harsh if the OP had said something like, "My family's kitchen could be renovated if we win this contest, so please vote in the contest." Instead he went ahead and said which to vote for and provided a little anecdote, intended to mold the minds of most of you into thinking his family deserves to win more than the other families, thus gaining your votes. Unfortunately, the contest has nothing to do with, "Which family has the most problems," its, "Which kitchen needs the renovation the most." If you think his family's kitchen needs the renovation the most, then great.
Some of you also seem to be under the impression that every other family could have done this, I ask you why? What makes you think the other families have Internet access? You are making quite a "brash assumption."
And as to how contestants are supposed to win, people who are browsing the website and come across the contest and are supposed to vote for which kitchen needs it the most, very simple.
