Why hasn't this been announced yet? The friken game was MADE for the DS. Stylus control, a microphone. I know it didn't sell well in the US, but in Japan folks went CRAZY for it. I'm pretty sure this idea has popped into the head of at least a couple Sega/Sammy executives. In fact, I'm kinda disappointed that more Sega stuff hasn't come out for the DS. It seems like the perfect systems for such a quirky developer.

Damn i was just about to post this.
The Aquirium could be on the top screen and invetory could be on the bottom. That would be AWESOME!!!

Don't forgot the other Dremacast game that used the microphone, "Alien Front Online".

Seaman would be a great game for the DS. It pretty much used all the functions the DS has.

Also, it would be really, really cool if they made it to where you could connect with a buddy and let your seamen interact with each other. Let them talk to each other and whatnot. I would imagine there could be some very interesting conversations.

It would be cool if it happened, but there would have to be added stuff in it, not just a direct port, besides I also dont think it can fit on the DS cartridge.

If they can't fit it on a DS cart, have them put it on both DS and GBA carts and put them in the DS at the same time...I'm sure there's some kinda program they can use to run data from both at the same time.

That's just beggining for a sarcastic comment. Seriously though, that's a great idea.

I tried playing with Semen on my DS and I only got a blurry touch screen... IMO it's not really that fun...

To hold everyone over, I guess the alternative is to play Nintendogs/Puppy Times... not as cool, but still awsome none the less (not to mention, I own a pug dog... wich happens to appear in the game)

DS cards are pretty much flash memory cards so I would think they could hold as much as flash memory card can.

I think Seaman could get ported pretty easly. Its all a matter of them wanting to.

I think the largest SD card out right now is about 2 gb, but they are mighty costly. But I bet they could get the game to fit if they cut out Leonard Nimoy's narration, although that would suck mightily.

DS cards hold something around 128 MB of data. I don't think that Seaman can be reduced to be that small, although it'd be great.

Also to note, the game wasn't developed by Sega, and Sega has no rights to it. It was made by Vivarium. I think either ASCII or D3 Entertainment published the PS2 version in Japan.

Seaman on the DS would be awesome! Im sure that playing in public could attract some pretty weird stares from people too. "What in the world are you doing??" "Well Im just playing with my Seaman, wanna play too?"

Yes it would be great.

And if warpipe were what everyone thinks think of having seamen of different regions looking, acting and being diferent...

Then when they "interact" their offspring would be a mix!

It could make for some sweet seamen!!

Was I the only person that played Seaman for DC and didn't like it? I found it to be quite boring.

No, DS cards are not flash memory cards. They used mask ROM with a small amount of flash for save data as needed. If they were flash cards they would be overly expensive and an engraved, gilt-edge invitation to pirates.

The physical size is not the issue. Cost is the determining factor for DS games, which currently top out at 128 MB. None of the current games use anywhere near that much space but that is the highest capacity Nintendo is currently offering publishers. Flash can also have long term usage issues that make it a bad substitute for mask ROM. They are subject to wear from read cycles that isn't a realistic issue for mask ROM. Most applications that use flash in place of ROM copy the contents to RAM for speed improvements at startup, so the read operation only occurs from the flash at each bootup rather than constantly. This has been standard in PC BIOS for many years, as the most common example.

The real question would be whatsize did the original occupy and how was the various data formatted? If anyone has an import of the PS2 version that would probably be the easiest to analyze.

IIRC the bulk of the game's data was audio files for bits of speech. For convenience's sake this was probably stored in plain WAV or Redbook format with no compression at all. For human speech you can get away with pretty major compression ratios and still have a famous actor's voice be recognizable. (Multi CD audio books reduced to justa few megabytes in WMA are good examples.) 500 MB of Redbook human voice can easily get down to 50 MB without severe loss of quality.

It would take some work, and the game would likely have to be a bit more expensive, say $5, than the average DS game but I think it's doable. Finding a sufficent market is the bigger question. If vivarium thinks they can make enough sales they could put it off for a year or so when the cost of DS cart capacity should have seen at least major drop.

And if you decide to put your Seaman to death you can pass your save data into a sushi preparation simulator that would also make good use of the stylus.

Get really good and you can take the fugu challenge!
