Seeing how I've had an xbox for 2 whole days, thats not really info I should be expected to know, is it? I didn't know live was the only way you could get online because you could get online for free with the DC. I didn't know if just the game matching service cost money or if it was everything....

Well tecnically it's not, there's things like XBox Connect that are tunnel software and allow you to emulate being sytem linked. Not every game supports this though, and even then you won't have all the feautures you get on Live. It's also really laggy if both parties don't have outstanding connections, so I'd stick with Live.
