How can i find out what type of ram i need for my system?

Go to www.crucial.com

Follow the steps to find your PC (this is assuming you don't have a custom built PC) and the site will tell you what type you need.

the cpu id program says i have

"Samsung DDR-SDRAM PC2100 - 128 MB"

so i just need PC2100 DDR Ram?

DDR and PC2100 is what you're looking for. The RAM has to be 184 pins as well. I'm no expert on these things but ram with those specs should work on your system.

You could always just print up the screen from crucial and take it with you to the store. Someone there would probably know what they have that will work.

DIMM stands for Dual Inline Memory Module. It's apparently a type of circuit board that holds memory chips. I took a look at besbuy.com and it appears that nearly all ddr pc2100 ram is dimm.

You can get any ddr speed, they are backwards compatible. I would get pc-3200. So if you upgrade in the future, you can use that ram. Althouth DDR2 is coming out....

DDR2 is already out and is insanely expensive. No use for it yet and it will take a while for DDR to phase out.

I'd also recommend getting a min of PC3200 for upgrade reasons in the future. You need it to run A64 and 800FSB P4s.

U sure about that? I guess it makes sence that you could underclock the ram, but that would require a bit of mucking about in the bios. i would just go ahead and and get the 2100. I mean no ofence to the thread creator but i think that he would be better off just buying the 2100

no tweaks in the bios are required. It will be plug and play all the way.

Even then, this really isn't the best time to be buying ram. Prices have been on the rise for a while now.

You know whats really funny, in the electronics stores the prices for SDram is about 20 bucks more than 2700 ddr.Last week they had a 512 meg stick of 2700 for $39.99 BUT a 256 meg stick of sd (cant remember the speed) for $49.99. WTF i say

If all possible, if you are adding more RAM, then get the same exact RAM that you currently have in your system. If you plan on replacing the RAM, then get what you want. Basically, don't mix and match.
