I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this game. I picked it up at TRU for $3 and don't know if I should play it or trade it. Can anyone give me any insight into Gameplay, battle system, perspective etc?

Well I played a few hours of the original Morrowind for Xbox before my system died and I had to trade it in. As a result I lost my save data and decided to wait until GOTY came out to start again...the game remains untouched so far...oh well.

On to the impressions:

It's an actual RPG in that your actions are nearly limitless instead of the strict linearity of most console RPGs. You can choose the 1st or 3rd person perspective but the 1st person one doesn't help you with your aiming at all. Why you say? Because it's ALL determined by stat rolls whether you hit something or not. Some people can't get over this.

Anyway, it's a very open game that you can easily sink hours into. You can kill anyone, break into houses, take whatever isn't nailed down, become a vampire (and werewolf in the GOTY as well), join a guild, read books, craft items, etc. Think of it as a single player MMORPG.

Best game ever!

But really it isn't worth a lot so why not try it out for a few hours, it's terribly addicting.

Read some reviews (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/915084.asp?q=Morrowind) before you open it.
I think its an ok game, but not great. It has a huge world, which is fun to explore. The combat is a cross between a D&D PC game and Fable. The battles are in real time and are kind of like Fable (its you against a few monster all without going to another map), but unlike Fable your stats determine if you hit your opponent or not, like in D&D PC games.
Beware because if you get into Morrowind you could spend hundreds of hours playing it because of the size of the world and the number of quests and sidequests.

You'll either love it or hate it.

First time I played I put an good three hours into the game, and I fucking hated it. I thought the combat was stupid, and it was too big of a game for it's own good.

Later, I re-bought the GOTY for some reason, and after spending more time with the game, I loved it. I learned the combat system, and actually think it's great. It's my favorite game of all time. It's amazing, a true masterpiece.

1. Morrowind: GOTY
2. Zelda: Link to the Past
3. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Resident Evil 4
5. Super Mario World

If you're willing to spend all the effort, time, and frustration it takes to truely enjoy the title...then yes, I would play it. It's probably the deepest game I've ever played. Though, with my attention span for offline games being very short, I only got through probably less than 5%.

I played it for a dozen hours or so and then put it aside. If this was back in the day when I'd only get a new game every few months I'd have probably really gotten into it. But as it is I just couldn't deal with the knowledge that I'd never truly 'finish' it and ended up just deciding to stop.

If you do really dig it I hear you can sink well over 100 hours into the game.

One thing I didn't like so much was the running around between cities. You have to actually walk between them on foot at first. And the game has you get winded if you run/jump everywhere. So you kind of have to stop and rest every so often (or walk - which is SLOW), as if you are jumped while exhausted you get jacked a lot faster. I didn't really see how that particular mechanic = fun.

It's been a while but if I remember right there are so many different stats/etc that build up as you do stuff the game can really give you that 'just one more bit and THEN I'll stop' feel for like 3 hours straight.

I have a sealed copy of the game and the strategy guide. I haven't tried it yet because I have so many freakin' games to play.

ive put well over 400 hours into the original morrowind and the GOTY edition over the past 3 years...seriously...i got so addicted to that game

i mean, even after i beat everything, i would do different stupid things

like try to destroy entire towns (although gaurd respawns damper that..oh well)....or build a fort entirely out of pillows in the middle of balmora (complete with furniture made of cups and a roof made of books!! had to search far and wide to find enough pillows for walls!)...i mean, the list of things you can do and dungeons/caves you can find is exhaustive

thinking about it, im going to start it up again tommorow nite and make a new character..hehehehehe

Personally, I believe this is one of the best games this generation.

This is a love it or hate it game, but I think part of that are the expectations people have. Take note, this is an RPG in every sense of the word. Even though you hit an attack button, when your skills are low, your hit percentage is low. So, early on, expect to have to swing weapons a lot to kill enemies. But, after a few hours of action, you're character will improve, and hitting gets easier.

The world is huge. There is so much to do. Also, you play the game how you want to. So, you can be a thief, you can be a soldier in the guard, you can be an assassine. There is so much to do, and in GOTY, you have the new areas too.

Overall, if you have some time to put into it (I've spent hours at a time playing, its so easy to want to do one more thing, and boom, half the day is gone), I think you owe yourself a try, plus you only spent $3

One last note, I'm stealing this from a review, but its so true, this game is probably the worst game ever created for instant gratification. You really need at least an hour or two everytime you play to get into it. If your looking for a game to play in 15 minute spurts, you'll hate this one.

time for an intervention...

This game sucked me in for almost a year straight. Countless hours spent on one character. I don't think I took the game out of the xbox for 6 months +...straight. Fun game but as you said you'll either love it or hate it. If you like to read ALOT and can really get into the history of Tamriel, then you're golden. I actually sold my copy because the temptation was too great to start another character. Good news is that Oblivion will be on the next xbox at launch.

I would suggest (if you're pc is up to it) getting the pc version as you have access to mods and such which make the game all the more enjoyable.

Well, I think I'll try it, like oen poster said "it as only 3 bucks". My problem is that I don't realy play these games in a serious manner. It's more for comedic purposes. As long as there's oportunity for my own brand of comedy in it, I think I'll be ok.

This is true, but if you could beat people with pillows, it would be the best game ever.
