To clarify a movie that was damn good and it took you by total surprise. For me its brotherhood of the wolf. i had a freind who had seen it push me into seeing it. He told me that it was more popular in france than the matrix. I was like sure ok but boy when i saw that film I was blown away

brotherhood ruled. i found equilibrium incredibly good. i never heard of it before penny arvade mentioned it in this comic (http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2002-12-11&res=l). i rented it and was like "wow". if it had come out before matrix, it wouldve been the most revolutionary movie ever.

i remember walking into Memento without having seen a single trailer, poster or article on it and i heard nothing about it. I worked at a theatre and just saw how packed the movie would get so i gave it a shot and its one of my favorite films. I was very surprised.

Equilibrium was hands down the biggest shock of my life. I was soo against seeing the film but my buddy insisted. I walked out of there totally blown away.

The Last Samurai was another film that managed to change my attitude towards it. When I first saw the trailers with Tom Cruise in it, I was totally disgusted. As far as I was concerned, he had no business being in a Samurai film. Fortunately for me, my lady insisted that we see it. Boy was I impressed. That scene with the Ninja's getting the shit kicked out of them. Whew!

I don't know why people hate on Tom cruise he is one of the best actors of our generation he has been in very few bad movies. last Samurai was a great flicks I love the scene where the guys rifle gets cut in half along with his head

.The Last Samurai was also very good to me as well. I thought it would be a mouth and book movie, like alot of talking and no action, the only reason I even went to see it was because it was about samurais. Boy, was I wrong, that movie rocked! It some awesome-ass samurai action as well as emotional parts, like when-oh, nevermind, don't wanna give away anything  .

Catch me if you Can. I was told by some of my peers that it sucked, but I ended up watching it when it came out on dvd, and found it really entertaining. My guess is I was told it was bad by people who hate Leonardo Dicaprio. I never really understood that either, he isn't a bad actor, Titanic was just a boring movie.

finding nemo. i didn't think it was going to be bad so much as i didn't think i wasn't going to enjoy it that much. disney movies are usually ok, but i'm not a huge fan of the computer graphics type movies, so when i absolutely loved it i was pretty surprised.

Most of the movies I think are stellar have caught me by surprise. One of the more recent ones though would have to be "O Brother, Where art thou". It was actually pretty good despite its kinda lame premise (it's a loose parallel at best).

Just shut up ya tool.

50 first dates. I thought it was going to be the usual Adam Sandler fare (which some of it was), but it had a surprising amount of heart, and they did the best ending they could have. Good movie

Oh yeah, Kill Bill derserves honorable mention. I knew it was going to be good, but I didn't expect it to be damned sweet.

The Rundown....I thought it was totally gonna suck, but I ended up really liking it in the end, even if it was cliche action stuff.

For me the best and the most surprising movie is the first Matrix. Equilibrium is also a very good and surprising movie. I love Monica Belluci in the Brotherhood of the Wolf.

i forgot one too, pleasentville. i was forced into watching that by my parents, but i actually liked it a lot. its not even my type of movie, but i thought it was great. legend of drunken master was also a suprise. me and my friend rentd it, expecting it to be a stupid kung-fu flick, but the fights were incredible.

speaking of jackie chan, what movie was it when he was wrapping the rope around himself taught, then letting it go and kicking ass? ive been dying to see it again, but i forgot what it was.

I ddnt actually enjoy the movie until DVD. Me, my then new girlfriend and 2 freinds of our went and saw it. Long story short, they got weirded out and we left during the "Like a Virgin" scene. Understandable really.

I tend to have lower expectations for movies than most people. I don't expect every move to be life-alerting, I just want to be entertainted for a couple of hours.

That said, most of the ones that take me by surprise are movies that look REALLY bad from the previews. Two recent examples are Kung Pow! and Super Troopers. I Netflixed both expecting them to be really bad, but end up enjoying them both - a LOT. :) Super Troopers is the closest anyone's come to remaking the Police Academy movies, and Kung Pow is just a hillarious take-off on kung fu flicks.

I have a stranger list of movies I've been really disappointed by, honestly. I thought Brotherhood would have been great, if it had been an hour shorter. I had low expecations for Matrix Revolutions but still expected to enjoy it since I liked the 2nd one more than most. I was wrong, it currently has the honor of being the worst movie I've seen this year. I will physically hurt anyone who tries to make me watch anything with John Travolta in it. The only exception being Pulp Fiction, but then again he does wind up deaded in that one... ;)

(Appologies for spoiling a 10-year-old movie :P)

Yeah, Return of the King woulda been great if it was about 3 days shorter. It was good, just not great. Kinda like all of those movie. Good, just not "OMG F'N AMAZING"

Field of Dreams was a movie I knew nothing about and thought I wouldn't be interested in, but is now one of my favorites.

Brazil.

i never saw it, but for some reason after watching 12 monkeys i wanted to see some of gilliam's films. the only version i could find on dvd was the $60.00
3-disc criterion collection.

i'm so glad i didn't find any other version, because this really does have the version everybody should watch. see, there were 2 versions, the 95 minute US version, and the 142 minute UK version. totally blew me away.

I was pleasantly surprised by Split Second with Rutger Hauer. It was like Predator, Alien, Blade Runner, and Seven all rolled into one.

"Wasabi" with Jean Reno as a rough and tough French cop, who finds out he has a daughter in Japan. Good action, and very funny too! ^_^

Glory. My professor made us watch it during the Civil War class I was taking. Turned out to be a damn fine movie.

I second that. I got dragged to 50 First Dates by a friend of mine for her birthday and expected it to suck hard, much like all of the recent Sandler movies (Punch Drunk Love, Mr. Deeds). I ended up really liking it.

Oh and if you get a chance, rent the movie Chopper, cool movie about the true life story of this crazy guy who's in jail then gets out and does some crazy shit.

I would say the one I was suprised by recnetly was the remake of "Freaky Friday" with Jamie Lee Curtis. You would have thought that a live-action comedy film made by Disney would be pandering, cute and irritating, but it was suprisingly smart and funny, and Curtis and Lohan really did a great job at pulling off how someone would react at their respective ages.

i second that. my parents rented it, but i decoded to watch it at like 2 and the morning, and it was suprisingly enjoyable. the new disney live flick coming out, around the world in 80 day, looks really funny too.

resident evil was better than i expected, i've seen it 3 times and the first time i thought it would be total crap like other video game based movies.

The Rundown was good too and if walking tall is anywhere near as good than i think ill start considering the rock to be a great action actor.

And last but not least Road to Perdition. it has an original storyline for a mob movie and tom hanks was kick ass.

Walking tall was pretty good IMO. Road to peredition is just awesome that one scene in the rain is one of the top scenes ever in cinema history

i'll throw in punch drunk love. since adam sandler is in it i figured it would be pretty bad, or ok at best, but it ended up being excellent.
