It's a warning sign, mine has been doing it for a while too.
Here's a trick that seems to work for me...
Don't load the disc in until you reach the browser screen (light gray), then put it in and it should say "reading disc", I get the clicking less often when I do this.
I believe it's just the laser failing to read the disc, and restarting quickly.

Mine does it on Ico and Ico only...which leads me to believe its the starting of DRE's...

Mine's about to break. It can't read a lot of games, or it just won't read them for a week or so. Also, you have to go to the browser a lot to start up a game. Why do the PS2's have to be so crappy?

The sound comes from the tray when closing i believe, mines has never done it however my friends does it all the time, that dosn't mean is about to break, X BOX MASTER , open it up and blow the dust away i guarantee you it will read every game perfectly, i have seen this happen as well

Every single disc you read
Takes it one step closer to the edge, and its about to break

Whenever that happens to mine, I have to open up the case and clean the lens with a little alcohol. That usually seems to stop it from happening for a few more months. Then just repeat as necessary.

That's kinda funny- mine won't play Ico either. (Which sucks, cuz I just got it :( )
As soon as I've got a little extra shipping money, I think I'm gonna try for that free repair thing.

What free repair are you referring to?
My ps2 makes sound when it is reading disc is that normal? Does the sound means that mine ps2 is dying soon? If I open my ps2 up and clean the lens will it fix the problem? And what is the best and safest way to clean up the lens for ps2?

my ps2 wont play blue discs for some reason but has no problems reading the regular ones.
I turn mine at a 170 degree angle (IE almost upside-down) and that seems to do the trick. You can turn it right side up when the disc picks up.
My friends still make fun of me, but F that.

It's probably the beginning of the dreaded DREs. It happened to mine a while back and I read from some website how to open it up and blow the dust away, realign the laser. Seems to work now but I still get the noise/problem ever so often.

just stomp it out...my mom taught me that if something or someone does something you dont like you should hit it/them and that should fix any problem.

Actually I have mine vertical because it can no longer read discs while sitting horizontally

I suggest everyone keeps their vertically since it has been tested that it catches half of less the dust, when the ps2 is horizontally the fan and the openings on the ps2 are very close to the surface which you are leaning it on and dust particles will always stick to the surface, since the fan is so close to the surface it will just easily pick up the dust , when it is standing up it's the complete oposite, it has more clean air, you dont even need a vertical adapter, it looks cooler ,and it's pretty stable, have had mines like this since the first day.

Dust is ps2's major flaw , as so was NES connector pin, and as so was n64 shitty analog stick on the controllers which would get all lose after 3 times of play , that controller was never the same after i had my first bowser battle on super mario 64.

nyone having troubles with clicking or actually having DREs should first try setting their system ti dignostic mode (supposed ti reset the lasers position) and then try starting the game form the browser window.
The clicking is the laser hitting the end of the track presumably because it's lost it's calibration and going too far in one direction to read the disk and it's usually an early indicator of DREs.
In which case it might be time to call up sony's consumer service line and tell them your problem, The rep will run you through the test I discribed above and if your system still isnth reading certain games they'll offer you a code to get your system fixed for free. get the adress, attach a message detailing the trouble and the rpair code and send it to them (should cost maybe 20 bucks) wait a few weeks and you system is returned with a new laser assembly.

my system has been opened before

ouch that sucks, so much for the free repair atleast for you anyway, but if you've opened your system you might be comfortable enough to try fixing it yourself. There are links to online tutorials in the repair thread.
