View Full Version : Slim PS2 - Should I get one?
I have an older PS2. I believe it is a SCPH 30001. I have never had any problems with it (knocks wood) but I am thinking of trading it in for the slim model. What do you guys think? Is it worth it? I heard a few people complain that their new slim models died rather quickly.

trade it in, the slim model is great, as long as youre not going to use the hard drive, ive heard some people say they had problems, but mine runs great, never over heats, and ive left it on for days on end. and if you have a 30001 its going to die eventually, you should trade it in while you can still get a good 75 bucks for it, at least the slim ps2 will be half off

If your PS2 still works then I would just keep it. Mine gave me DREs for CD games and I took advantage of the trade in at EB to get it for free...
I just got the slim PS2 today and its great. I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you have a lot of clutter in your entertainment center and could use the space. The thing is literally the size of a graphic novel.

Honestly, I don't see any reason why you should buy a new PS2 if you have one that works already.
I have a slim-line PS2. My experiences with it is:
1) It seems to be working reliably for PS2 games, even when left on for several hours of continuous play.
2) It is somewhat better at reading DVDs than the original PS2, but still has skipping problems.
3) It is a hell of a lot smaller than the original PS2. I could easily see packing this in a school bag or something.
So as far as features go, #3 is the only reason I would consider buying a new one. If you travel a lot, and always wanted to be able to lug your PS2 around, the slim line will let you do that. But other than that, its just a nicer looking PS2.

Online gameplay on the slim one is pretty good. Mine gets hot after a while though, and it makes scratching noises on the inside of it, like it's scratching the games or something

The newer model will eventually drop its price by at least $50, so if there is no functional need, why spend more now?

The fat PS2 in working condition will be worth a lot more than the slim version unless they add HDD support (doubtful). If you can afford to hold on to it, keep it and you can sell it for a whole lot more in the near future.

My slim PS2 loaded up a Playstation game directly, and I have never seen that in my 30001.

I could play all my PS1 games on my 30001 PS2. Yours probably needs to be repaired by Sony.
