Popular online videogame retailers Electronics Boutique and Gamestop have recently added Atlus' unusual RPG spin-off Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 to their pre-order release lists. The expected street date is late August on both sites, but no box art or further details have been provided.

The strange thing about this development is that the first installment isn't even out in North America yet. Scheduled for release later this month, Digital Devil Saga 1 follows a young "Junkyard" tribe leader named Serph who's been caught in the middle of clan war. Players will be able to kill and ingest their enemies to absorb their demonic properties, and the art style is a little more traditional than that of mainline Shin Megami Tensei series. Saga 2 keeps these same properties but continues the story from where the first game left off.

We gave Atlus representatives a call about an official Digital Devil Saga 2 announcement earlier this afternoon, but they declined to comment about its validity. Should news break that says otherwise, though, we'll be back to let you know.

This sounds unusually close if it's true. Will you still be getting the sequel in August if you're getting DDS?

I talked to Punq about this the other day. He mentioned that it's like the Outbreak series, one every three months or something to continue the story. I'd say rent 'em. I was shocked as well.. I remember saying specifically "There's a sequel to a sequal that's not even out yet?"

I think you mean .hack and I think you're both wrong. DDS 2 just came out on 1/27 in Japan and its just a sequel there is no part 3 yet.

Well Atlus did said that DDS2 would be out in summer, so a late August is possible.

I went to GameRush and asked for the availability of preorder for SMT:DDS. The girl asked me which one as there is a SMT:DDS2 coming out in August in their computer system.

Does anything extra come with preordering SMT:DDS? I was thinking of actually paying full price for it.

I think DDS2 was always expected to come out soon, it's been on the ebgames website as a preorder for quite a while. Also It is suppose to be a 2 part series.

You got a controller armour when you preorder at EB or gamestop.

The deluxe box for DDS is supposed to hold both titles so the news of a sequel isn't shocking.

I also hope they didn't just take a really long game and half it into two pieces to make a little extra cash.

Yaeh I got word of this today through my long trek when I was thinking of pre-ordering SM: DDS 1 and the employee was like which one.

Seems feasible from what I have read of the Japanese release.
