I just got a PS2 and I'm in the market for a side-scrolling space shooter. Which one of these should I get? Or is there some other game you'd recommend first?

Rtype final is awesome. I haven't played G5 yet though...

Gradius V stomps R-Types ass. Its easily the best on the system and arguably has the best graphics f a shmup ever, although that's not saying much as there's like 6 shooters on the system and I think those two and gradius 3/4 are the only side scrolling. Silpheed, MLF 2 and Shikigami 2 are your other options, and I'd highly recommend Shikigami for 9.99 :-)

Silpheed = :cry:

However, if you're looking for great shooters, I HIGHLY recommend Mars Matrix for the DreamCast.

MLF 2 ?

What is that short for ?

Been on a space shooting binge lately with Gradius V and Mars Matrix.

Also anyone know where to score a copy of Gradius 3/4 ?

Both are good, but my preference lies with Gradius. Anyhow, how is Gradius 3/4? I'm leaning towards picking it up...

R-type Final can be had for cheap at TRU, so consider getting both.

I, on the other hand, cannot recommend this game. I paid full price (which was only a measely $10) and was disappointed in it. It was just boring... However, I did enjoy R-Type Final and even Silpheed wasn't that bad. Still nothing compares to my favorite... Ikaruga.

You should also be looking at the range of PS1 shooters you can run on your PS2. That expands the field nicely with some great titles.

It's good, though it's on a cd-rom disc, so you need to apply the tape method to play it if your system has problems with them.

Mobile Light Force 2

Shikigami is the "sequel" to it. It's also pretty cheap, I've seen Fry's sell it for $12.99.

Gradius V is a better game than R Type final

but R Type has the whole replayblity / unlockables thing going on.

theyre both fun tho, so base your decision on that

I, too, prefer Gradius V over R-Type Final. But that doesn't go to say that R-Type Final isn't any fun.

Gradius V is better then R Type. It all comes down to level designs.

In R Type it seemed like the programmers spent all their time creating a entire hanger full of ships and then tacked on the levels as a afterthought. The only level I still recall is the one that changes settings depending on how you defeat the boss. The rest were pretty bland. I think the major problem was terrain wasn't utilized properly as a obstacle.

Gradius 5 OTOH has some of the best level designs I've ever seen. The slime level was great use of physics and gravity. The asteroid field level remains one of my favorites in any shooter. I remember fighting that boss at the end (with the screen completely covered in rocks and bullets) and just grinning the entire time. I still play this game every now and then but I haven't touched R Type since I beat it.

Havent play Gradius V, but R-Type Final is a joke. I think R-Type 3 is a much better game, but than again you should be able to get Final for $10-15 at TRU.

Gradius V is the better game IMO, and I have both. You might also want to try and find Gradius III/IV.
