Memory Card Unformatted?? Pls Help

I'm new at this, so it may sound like a dumb question.

I just bought a used PS2 off someone (who is gone for a couple of weeks, so I can't ask them) and I bought a new Sony memory card 8mg and stuck it in, but it says that the memory card is unformatted.

I thought the card was bad and got a new card, same thing.

I tried in both slots and several games, same thing.

Is my system screwed up? How do I reformat this card (if possible)?? I'm not sure if the system has been modified, could that be a problem??

That's normal. There's nothing wrong with your new card.

I just bought a new PS2 and memory card yesterday, and it said the same thing to me. I was playing ICO, and it said, "Would you like to format the memory card?" I said, "Yes", and it formatted it and I was good to go. Just let the game format your card for you. It will only ask for it once, and after that you can save your games no problem.

It's normal, you have to format the memory cards when their new or you can't use them. Any game will do this for you, so don't worry.

I have a non sony PS1 memory card, which now appears to be unformatted. On removing the case it has a battery. My guess it is flat. In the process of ordering a new battery.

I would not want to depend on a battery to not lose my saves. I would buy a Sony Memory card.
