It's interesting to see his take on the MGS series and how it's done. Pretty good interview as well.

I hope he was kidding about not releasing 4 in the US.

I was hoping too when I read that, but then I thought that he had to be kidding that he wouldn't release it here. I think he was being sarcastic but the interviewer didn't put that down.

" I'm really happy with everything. In the United States I think because Halo 2 and GTA: San Andreas came out at the same time the title hasn't done as well as expected, it's still done moderately well, but it's been doing really well in Japan and Europe so we're very relieved. Maybe I won't even sell the next game in the United States."
i dont think you have to put that its sarcasm when its that blatant...though it would be funny if japanese game developers punished us for not buying their games.

They already do by not releasing all those loveable quirky Japanese titles that we want here like that Yoshinoya game and that one cooking restaurant game, etc. :(
They only tickle our taste buds with wonderful games like Katamari Damaci, Cubivore (from what I have heard as I don't own one, and can't find one), and Ribbit King.

Not to mention the fact that they give Europe and Japan awesome cover art while they go out their way to make ours look bad. :( Just look at EU's RE2 cover:

I assumed sarcasm at first, but this is Hideo Kojima... you never know what to expect.

when you look at the games american gamers worship, we deserve it.

This is Hideo, he might not be being sarcastic. He might not release 4 here, it might be called 4 Substance or something to that effect.
Don't worry, this series makes a fortune here, he'll keep releasing them in the U.S.
But, I don't think all of the lower sales has to do with San Andreas and Halo 2. Part of it has to do with Substance. Everyone is assuming that there will be another release sometime in 2005 with the game and tons of great extras. I think lots of people sat on the sidelines for that reason (it's one of the reasons I don't have it yet).

Yaeh with a Madden every year that is basically the same. :? I feel the frustation as well. At ealst some titles are starting to show up here that in the past would have just been looked over.

ultimately it's not even his decision where to sell it, it's Konami because they sign his check every week and they're going to do what ever makes them money.

MGS seems more geared towards americans. The storylines and settings seem more fit for an American audience than Japanese. I really doubt, and hope, that that statement is false. I really hate how a great game like MGS3 was over-shadowed by GTA and Halo. Those games are good too in their own aspects but IMO, MGS seems to be better in quality and it seems like MUCH more effort was put into the game that others.

Seeing how so the MGS series is based on so much American stuff, it would be crazy not to release it here. For example the scenes of New York in the credits of MGS 2.

Maybe he's saying that so when MGS4 does get released, people will buy it like crazy to prove him wrong.

Aren't the MGS games released in North America before Japan? Or am I mixing it up with Capcom's Resident Evil/Biohazard games?

MGS2 was definatly released here first but only because we liked MGS1 more than the japanese. Although I think they got MGS2:substance before we did, sorta their way of boosting japanese interest by giving them more goodies.
I really wouldnt worry about the comment guys we'll see MGS 4 whether we want to or not.
