I played the first game and couldn't put it down for days! What an awesome game! Scared the crap out of me though - there was a car accident outside at 3:00am while I happened to be playing the game and the loud bang made me jump at least 3 feet in the air while sitting down! Games very rarely scare me but this is one of them that did!
I have Silent Hill 2 which I haven't gotten into yet...but I MUST pick up the third one!! :D

I bought SH3 at KBToys during the holidays and the game still scares the hell out of me. It's very disturbing, but it's great nonetheless.

Silent Hill 2 stands alone, and is a good place to start with the series. SH3 is a direct sequel to the first, and so you'll need to play SH1 to get everything out of it... but oh, is it rewarding.

SH2 is better story & gameplayed but SH3 have better graphic & gameplayed :)

How confusing would 3 be without playing the first one? I'm looking to get into this series but would prefer to pick up with 3 then play whatever comes later.

Highly recommend playing SH1 before SH3. But that shouldn't stop you from buying SH3 first ;)
You can get SH1 for a decent price (around $16 or so) on Amazon Marketplace (also known as Buy Used and New from $x.xx)
And pick up SH2, for Xbox if you have one (includes expanded gameplay, new mini-campaign), for it is the game that got me into Silent Hill and it is fucking fantastic.
