Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at morebass4u@juno.com. Thank you all for your consideration.

If you have guides to trade or request please post here as well and of course any video game magazine deals you may find from any store.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. morebass4u@juno.com} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

nice list...

it would be better though if you categorized it if it was PC or console... kinda annoying to read for it.

also add Ratchet and Clank (Prima) to your list from TRU.

As far as magazines go too........anything 2 years old and older from Toys R US goes down to a penny...usually they still have them too.

BTW, I also saw the Chaos Legion guide in the .01 stack last night @ EB, but didn't pick it up because I already had it. I'm gonna try to go by my other local EB today and see if they have any more there.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the console is .01per previous posts as I have not been fortunate to be able to personally verify this. Though I can confirm that the PC guide is the full price as of at least a few weeks ago.

WhipSpankBanky

I understand your concern. There is so much clutter among many message boards and I assure you that is one of the last things I was trying to do. I felt that having a new concise thread might better help all CAG'ers as the old Best buy thread was great but left not much room for completeness and simplicity for newcomers. Perhaps as Mr. andrew333 suggested you or someone else could lock the previous Best buy thread with a final link to this thread. Thank you for your time and your consideration.

OK, just got back from my other local EB. I found a few new ones there & some info. All .01:

Viewtiful Joe
Enter The Matrix
Temple of Elemental Evil (pc)
Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Underentide (pc)

Now for the info. The manager told me that the head office tells them to destroy the guides when they hit the .01 mark, but he knew me so he would sell them to me anyway. No idea why they'd want them just destroyed, but there you have it. So it will probably help to know someone @ EB, or at least hope for a friendly manager/employee. ;)

I was at EB today and they had a ton of the guides stacked up at the register, including Enter the Matrix. I asked if I could buy one(just wanted to check the price, but didn't want the cashier to know), and the guy said all those guides were being sent back to headquarters. So I assume Enter the Matrix is a penny. They had about 30 of them, and one or two copies of some other guides, but he wouldn't sell any of them to me.

i got Chaos Legion, Mega Man X7, and Advance Wars 2 guides at EB, you'll have to get them scanned too, because EB usually just goes by the labeled prices.

there were more, but i felt like kind of a jackass anyway when he said they were supposed to be 'field trashed.' he sold them to me anyway.

i found fuking 6 1 cent guides at TRU and the bitch wouldn't let me buy them, some shit about sending them back to get credit or some shit. REALLY pissed me off. Bloodrayne, Xbox Football, Counter Strike, Sphinx, Mission Impossible, and something else.

i'm going to check a closer EB tomorrow, see what they have. they know what i look like at least, although i don't actually 'know' them, names and whatever.

Is it possible they ring up for $14.99 but once the cashier hits, total it will be a penny a guide?

It seems like when an item is on sale/clearance at Toys R Us, it rings up for more before the cashier hits total.

I once bought NBA 2K3 and it was supposed to be $9.99. It rang up $14.99 but after the cashier hit total, the price changed to the correct price of $9.99.

Mario Advance 3

With the guides, whatever they ring up will show up on the price scanner. When the cashier rings them if they come up as $14.99 they will still be $14.99 once the cashier hits total. The price only changes for promotional deals. The NBA game was an advertised deal and regular price was $15, so it drops it to $10 after they hit total. Guides are price drops and will automatically show up as whatever their correct price is, even if you bring it to a price checker that will be the price it will ring up for.

btantra, just out of curiosity, which TRU are you at? Most of the time TRU has standard prices nationwide, but there are a few stores they have tried tiered pricing where some popular items at that store are more expensive than other stores.

That's what happened to me at Gamestop today. I looked through the guides (noting that there were 3 Viewtiful Joes), and then asked a clerk if they keep the clearance guides with the full price guides. He said yes, and asked what I was looking for. I told him Viewtiful Joe and he looked it up on the computer. He said they didn't have any. When I said I saw some on the shelf, he said I could have it for free.

Just got back from my TRU, and no new info but a few confirmations. I checked just about every guide they had at the self-check station, and only found three that scanned for .01:

Dark Cloud 2
Sphinx
Metroid Prime/Metroid Fusion combo

I checked all their Zelda guides (TWW - Brady, Prima & offical and Four Swords official) and all of those scanned at normal prices. I found a couple of random guides that scanned for $7, but when you're paying .01 a piece for the other $7 seems like a fortune. :P

I've got a question for you Dead of Night. Are Gamestop employees allowed to buy things while they're on the clock? I was just wondering, because when the clerk saw that my guide rang up for a penny, he said he wanted one too, and grabbed the last one off the shelf. He actually left me waiting at the counter in the middle of the transaction while he hurried over to get his guide. Another time, I sold some unusual cables to them, and the clerk said something to the effect that they were never going to make it to the shelf. He has since commented to me that he really likes them. It really doesn't bother me, because I suppose that's one of the perks for working there. I'm just curious about whether Gamespot is okay with it, discourages it, or looks the other way. Thanks for the reply Dead of Night. I think the employee yesterday was worried that one of the other customers might have over heard that the guide was only a penny. Since there was only one left, he may have been worried someone else would grab it first.

On another note, when I went to EB yesterday, I saw a woman head straight to the strategy guides with a list in her hand. I bet she was a CAG too. Unfortanately, the EB clerk told me they destroy the guides when they drop to a penny. Here's what I think stores ought to do with old guides: collect them in a big bin, and when someone buys a new strategy guide, let them also pick out one or two old ones for free. It seems kind of wasteful to just destroy them.

Thanks for the reply Dead of Night. I think the employee yesterday was worried that one of the other customers might have over heard that the guide was only a penny. Since there was only one left, he may have been worried someone else would grab it first.

First off I hate it when employees hold merchandise for themselves. (This is btw off topic.)Example: when gamestop had that awesome 50% off used accessories on their memorial day sale I went to several gamestops searching for used wavebirds, one gamestop had one but wouldn't sell it to me because one of the managers was going to buy it and another one I went to an employee told me that she took the thing immediately off the shelf when she saw it so she could buy it.

Okay back on topic I think that the Lord of the Ring: Return of the King guide is now a penny at ebgames. When I was there a little while ago someone was looking to buy it because he bought the game also. I then overheared the employee say that he couldn't sell this because it's corporate policy, so i think the guide is a penny. Can anyone confirm this?

Oh btw, Dead to Night since your a gamestop employee I was wondering if you have that gamestop membership card. I was speaking to a gamestop employee a couple of days ago and i believe he said it stacks with the employee discount.

04-18-2004, 12:39 AM
When it comes to employee holds, that's just one of the perks. Sorry, magus. Retail is such a thankless job, and little things like that make it more tolerable.

The thing about employee holds, is that they have absolutely no business letting you know that they're holding the item to begin with. And, if it's within your sight/accessibility, then you should be able to purchase it. Whomever told you they had that wavebird but put it on hold anyway obviously just wanted to mess with you, be it true or not. That kind of thing pisses a customer off. I would've just said "We didn't have any.", period. A lot easier to swallow than "We have them, but not for you! Nyah!" :P But, again, you can't expect much more than that, as retail isn't a very noble profession to begin with.

Can anyone confirm what magus83 said about the Lord of the Ring: Return of the King guide possibly being a penny ? That would be a nice find

hoshi

that sounds like a nice alternative to not getting them at all and that might actually increase guide sales. So from a business stand point it could be a boost to sales or a drop if people just wated to get low priced guides to get free ones.
Also if that was adopted those with good staff at eb's and gamestop's would loose the current opportunities.
bleh so many variables back and forth of course.

First off I hate it when employees hold merchandise for themselves.

I agree completely. Or at least, as someone else said, don't let the customers know you're holding something. I was at a Gamestop a couple years back when I found a mint copy of Thousand Arms. As I was buying it, the clerk tells me the guy traded in a mint Suikoden 2 as well, but that he was buying that. I've worked in retail too, and I'll admit that I've held things for myself once or twice. But if the customer ever found it out, they got it, end of story.

Anyway, back on topic - the second EB I stopped at buying guides, the manager was selling them to me. He told me he was going to hold some of them back to use as promotional items - bundle them with games or systems. I thought this was a pretty cool idea, actually. Guide goes down to .01, bundle it with it's respecitve game. It'd be a "while supplies last" deal, but still....a lot better than just throwing them away.

Thank you for the guide additions. Much appreciated.

If everyone could post when they have either cleared a store or verified a store in there area cleared I am sure it would greatly help us all and save much inconvience. Thank you all for your contributions and your help.

Best Buy in Land Mark Center (Boston, near Fenway Park) was all out of those .01 guides.

Can someone take a .01 guide request? Toys R US had a beautiful Soul Cali 2 hardcover strategy guide but it rung up full price. Can you all keep an eye out for this one when it hits a .01 and post it asap?

That thing is just too nice to end up in the garbage (where some throw all .01 guides at).

I checked FFX-2 and NFL Street today, and both still ring up as full price. For any fellow Phoenix CAGers, the BB in Glendale pretty much sucks. The only penny guide they have is Conflict Desert Storm, and it's been that way for some time. The BB in Goodyear is much better. I just have a question/comment about places like EBgames and Gamestop....around where I am (NYC) the stores are usally pretty small and very busy....I've never seen a guide marked discounted, even crazy old ones.....and the few times I have asked if the game was on sale someone would quickly shoot back "no, it's as marked". I am going to go back when it's not too busy and force someone to scan it...... should the ones listed really come up as .01 at all EB's or Gamestops? The managers around here aren't too friendly but I would like to get Manhunt now that it's coming out for Xbox.

9 times out of 10 they're just being lazy. I had the same problems during the Circuit City secret discount, I'd take a game that was clearly marked as $40 up to the counter and ask what price it was and they'd give me a look like I just screwed their dog. If they give you flak, either tell them you heard some guides have been discounted heavily (and you know the employees aren't going to go through and constantly remark the guides to a lower price) or you can just make up some BS story about wanting the exact price as you're paying in change (always fun when you whip out the CC afterward).

as being an employee of EB, they tell us to throw away the guides once they drop to .01. Some stores are lazy and don't throw them out like they should. Some even hold them and give them away with the game they are for. I am pretty sure Gamestop is the same way.

Just got back from a GuideQuest around midtown manhattan....mixed results.

TRU times square had only a beat up copy of The Getaway, and 10 copies of NFL Fever 2004. I asked the cashier how much they were, I thought they were on clearance. She was very nice and said wow you can't go wrong with 2 cents (i had gotten one of each.) I said hang on and went back to get another copy of NFL and another guy behind the counter came and followed me to to the guides...and as soon as I moved away he grabbed the remaining NFL Fever's and took them out. Not before he gave me a NASTY look though. What a jerk (unless he's going to get in trouble if they get sold).

Next on my trip was Gamestop 6th and 44th street. They had Mario Kart Double Dash Prima and LOTR Fellowship Prima. Unfortunately both rang up at 14.99. It didn't say on the list which brand Mario Kart was but LOTR should have worked. The cashier was kind of a jerk about checking them. I did see a project gotham racing 2 prima tagged for 9.99 and I'm just getting into the game...I picked out the nicest copy, which didn't have a gamestop sticker on it. It rang up full price. I had to get the other one and even then the reduced sticker didn't scan but he sold it to me for 9.99. The store was busy as I mentioned before but he wasn't very nice about any of it.

The final stop on my initial GuideQuest was Bestbuy. They had hardly ANY guides, let alone reduced ones. I did see 2 copies of Hobbit and grabbed them each. I asked a floor person to check it and it rang up 1 cent. At the register I got the guides and a $20 GGC which I wanted to get anyway, the guy rang them up without any problems.

Thanks very much for compiling the list. I still have a few more stores to check later, but I am doubtful I will get anythings. The manager at the closest EB is a total hardass. He was pissed when people were coming in to get Chaos Bleeds for 9.99, I'm sure he'll flip out if I try to get .01 guides. Maybe I will try to pop in when he's not there.

I know the guides I got are crappy...I would really like Prince of Persia and Manhunt if anyone happened to get a lot. I was able to get my hands on the Getaway, Hobbit and NFL Fever 2004. If anyone wants to trade I'll give you 2 for 1 or pay both our shipping....

All the managers now in my area throw them out when they print out in the morning. Most of the time I can get in to get mine before he tosses them. The company doesn't want us to sell them once they hit .01. I personally give them out with the game it goes with until the end of the night then toss them. I am pretty sure it is for a writeoff; it's in a deal with the printing companies of these guides. Normally, the nintendo made ones will be tossed before the Prima and Bradys.

I finished off the day with a trip to EB Manhattan Mall and Gamestop Herald Square.

When I got into EB, I knew it was too good to be true. They had tons of great guides there, many that were on the list. I really wanted MegaMan Zero 2 and some others. Of course, they all rang up at full price. The manager, not the jerk who's usually there, this lady, was cool. She told me her store isn't connected via high speed but rather connects once a day over the modem to get updates. And that they often don't get certain updates. I don't know if she is talking out of her ass or what, but that's what she said. If there are any EB employees on here who would know why this stores prices aren't lowering on the guides with the rest i'd be interested. I tell you, that store will be a gold mine the day they actually close out the guides.

I got a little luckier at Gamestop Herald Square. They had a stack of guides priced at .01. I got 2 each of SSX3 Prima, Sword of Mana Nintendo, Viewtiful Joe Brady. I also went digging and found a beat up copy of Zelda Four Swords/Nintendo and an even more beat up copy of dot hack 1. But for once cent, not bad, and only the covers are roughed up. Again I was sort of surprised that this store had closeout guides and the nearby Gamestop had all original prices.....if anyone goes to the herald square there are like 8 or so viewtiful joe's left and some SSX.

Zelda: Wind Waker by Nintendo should have been dropped, the prima one is still at full price. I personally have been waiting for it to drop.

Viewtiful Joe - was dropped down to a penny a week or two ago. The EB is your area might try to sell it at full price (?)

F-Zero - Nintendo made one was dropped same time as Viewtiful Joe. Other brands haven't dropped it yet.

Enter the Matrix is still the full price. Warcraft have no clue on.

lordopus99

Enter the matrix still at full price ? Are you sure. It has been 7.99 locally for awhile and about a week ago it went a penny at my local EB. They gave me a dozen out of the trash they were about to take out. If you can confirm that it is still full price where you are and there has been no local manipulation then this might make EB a YMMV type store. If this is so could you please post where your store is or at least the state if you feel comfortable. This would be much appreciated. Also I was given several Warcraft III the frozen thrones for the same reason.

I look forward to both of your reply's and thank you.

Let me mention one more time it was 14.99 at the store I went to today!

It sounds to me like these don't come straight through the computer pricing system? Like a message with a suggestion comes, that they are authorized to sell them for a cent/throw them away, to save space etc? I can definately go back to the store, im sure they will all still be there. Not a single book was marked down. If you are thinking that maybe they came up as .01 and the lady lied to me....anything's possible but I've seen her there many times before, she is very nice, kind to people (not like the other jerk manager) and she was even apologizing that they weren't marked down if they should have been. I don't think she would put on a charade just to get me out of the store to clean house. I think the store may just be a rogue EB :)

I am sorry if I offended you. That was not my intention. What you said was what I was thinking though that it might have been .01 and because either by her choice, by the fact that it did not physically say .01 or by her understanding/interpertation of store policy she said it was not one cent.

perhaps it is also that I am hoping that there is something going on here because if not then at the very least there is at least one store that does not have the reduced prices making EB Games a YMMV. Boy I hope not.

I am personally striving to make the most complete and acurate list for all CAG'ers to enjoy thats another reason why I ask people for confirmations if it is within their ability so CAG'ers can be helped.

I have a feeling that some store's (probably some in major metro area's) are out of the loop because every single time a set of guides has been suggested in here I have went to the various stores and either ended up getting the guide or confirming many of them to be one cent by the employee looking it up in the computer.

I would highly suggest the use of self scanners at area's where they are available or heck try to get yourself in a position where you can see the monitor/screen they are looking at. If anyone is able to scan a .01 cent guide on this list and it comes up a different price please list the price, store name and location for us.

I would hate to have anyone attempt to purchase guides off this list and waste their time having them come up with other prices.

Please everyone keep posting anything guide related with as much information as is available to you so we may pinpoint all that is going on and eliminate as many problems as possible.

I was not offended at all floormat. I did tell her I thought they were on .01 closeout. If they were but she couldn't/wouldn't sell them to me I'm sure she would have just said so.

And although they may be 90% accurate, I think the unfortunate fact is that just about everything is YMMV. See my previous posts for guides that came up full price at Ebgames and a Gamestop. It doesn't matter if it's YMMV the list is still great and I have gotten multiple guides at .01. How can you top that.

I had a pretty good time at EB today...check this out....after going to another EB yesterday and finding everything at regular price I figured it would be the same but I gave it a shot anyway. At the first EB I had built a huge stack before realizing I had wasted my time. So this time I just grabbed a viewtiful joe and brought it to the register. I asked one guy to scan it for me, was it on clearance. He said no, not that guide. Then, he was corrected by someone I have come to know as the GuideMaster. The other employee on duty said yes it was .01, and that he was a collector of guides. I went back to the rack to go get more and had built quite a large pile when the GuideMaster came over to where I was and with BLINDING speed began pulling out guides he knew were .01 from memory and giving them to me. Those he wasn't sure of he ran and scanned for me. I got two of all this stuff:

XIII Brady
Haunted Mansion - Brady
TMNT - Prima
Brute Force - Prima
Killswitch - Brady
Starwars Clone Wars - Prima
Wario World - Prima

1 Each of this stuff:
Fzero GX - Nintendo
Warioworld - Nintendo
Donkey Kong Country - Nintendo
MegaManX7 - Brady
Beyblade - Prima
Viewtiful Joe - Brady
Wrestlemania XIX - Prima
I-Ninja - Brady
Hunter The Reckoning:Redeemer - Prima
Fugitive Hunter - Prima
Backyard Wrestling
T3- Prima

I hit the motherload! And, they didn't even charge me the .01 :) He helped me bag them all up and everything. Really nice guy. The other employee was dumbfounded, but dared not question the GuideMaster. GuideMaster asked me where I got my list and when I told him cheapassgamer he burst out laughing. He had never heard of it. I tried to recruit him to the site, but he said he didn't have internet access at home and didn't use it very much? Weird. Anyway im sure lots of EB and other employees know about the guides as well, but to me he really was the GuideMaster. I think some of the above may not have been on the list also?

Anyway it was a great find, I hope to find some more good stuff next week.

Oh and I know I have some guides in my wanted that aren't .01 cent guides...so if you have one of these that you maybe paid a bit of money for but still want to trade I'd hook you with multiple guides, pay both our shipping, maybe throw in something else, that kind of thing to even it out.

That's pretty messed up. I can even understand if they don't want it going through the system as sold for a cent, they should just demagnetize it and let it go for free. What does it matter if it's torn up or if you enjoy it....

Nope. Just take the "GUIDE" to any cashier register ask for "PRICE CHECK" if is Penny you pickup if not YOu don't need to BUY IT.

be reasonable though. A guide for something like Ninja Gaiden or Metal Gear Twin Snakes wont be discounted for at least 6 to 8 months after its release. Think Homeworld 2 and Armed and Dangerous were just discounted Friday.

So, is there a special place in Gamestop and Best Buy where they have .01 cent guides, or do you just have an employee ring them up? Or are the prices right on there?

It really varies by store. I've been to 2 Best Buys where penny guides were marked as costing $14.95, and 1 Best Buy where penny guides were actually marked as a penny. I've been to 1 Gamestop where they gave the guides to me for free, and 1 Gamestop where I had to pay the penny.

Also, all the penny guides I've seen have been mixed in with the full price guides. Look through the guides yourself instead of asking an employee if they have any, because they usually tell me they're all full price. Plus, one time I asked a Gamestop employee if they had any Viewtiful Joes, and he looked on the computer and told me no. However, I found 3 on the shelf. The employee said something to the effect that once they drop to a penny, they're removed from the computer. He's the same guy that gives me guides for free.

I do have a few suggestions, but they are pretty much common sense.....

When employees think that something weird is going on, or that someone might be trying to get over on them, they are usually suspicious and hesitant to help....this goes for .01 guides or price matches. When getting the .01 cent guides, I usually just take one book and ask if this item is on clearance or one-cented. If they say no before scanning, VERY politely say you think you saw it somewhere online that they were throwing them out and had reduced them in the system. This I think works better than just saying gee how much is this, because when it rings up as .01 the person will usually do a triple take. Walking up to the register with a HUGE stack of books that you intend to get for .01 before seeing if it's ok first will probably piss off a clerk too. If I see the one guide ring up as a cent, I usually figure this is a store that gets the guide markdowns and I'll ask if it's ok if I grab a bunch more guides before they're thrown out. More often than not the people will have no problem with it....also make sure that you don't try to do this while there's a ton of people in the store and on line....even if you are a good customer, the clerks need to pay more attention to people shelling out dough for games rather than us shelling out .30 cents for 30 guides....hope this helps someone...

I work at a Gamestop, and my boss lets me have dibs usually on any guides we're going to throw out. new guides are being posted by everyone into the thread and a couple of times a week as i have time i add them to the master list.
I asked in the main narative of the master list if anyone is an employee and can message me that day ASAP with new guides so people can can have the best chance of making it to the local EB or Gamestop ETC.. and picking them before they clear the shelves. So far no one has done that though.

Floormat, great job keeping all the guides listed and organized.

I was at Toys R Us tonight and picked up a couple of penny guides nobody's mentioned yet:

LOTR: The Two Towers - Prima
Sonic Advance/Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (2 guides in 1) - Versus Books

In addition I picked up the already mentioned Dark Cloud 2, Sonic Advance 2, The Getaway, The Sims, and Yu-Gi-Oh Duellists of the Roses.

The clerk there actually helped me search for penny guides, scanning each as we looked though the shelves. It was so refreshing to actually have someone help me for a change (she actually wanted to pick up some for her son as well).

Oh, and about CompUSA, I had no problem getting the FF Origins and ZOE2 guides. Just brought them up to the cashier, he said "Ummm, wow, 4 cents" and I was on my way :D

I am almost sure the local BB's aren't. All the guides diappear the first day they are posted here and then over about the next week various ones of the newly added ones appear a few at a time daily for about a week till they are gone. Like I said thats why I don't mind more of them making their way to Ebay. I would never have bought it from some clown who charges 8.00 for shipping.

No sweat brother, I didn't take it that way. I agree I cannot see how it was worth their time either. Reading this might make a few people think before they grab every last guide on the shelf.

I've asked 2 Gamestops and 1 EB what they do with their guides once they drop to a penny. All 3 said they trash them (although one admitted the employees take them home too). However, I have still found a few guides (few being the operative word) at all 3 stores that rang up for a penny, and the employees let me have them for free. So don't let it discourage you if a store claims to throw the guides out, look through them anyway, you might get lucky. Also, I haven't been hassled at a single store (I've been to 6) on any of my visits, so don't be shy about getting a price check. More than likely, you won't get your head bit off, especially if you go in during their slow times.

slow times thats a major key. Don't forget that they typically make zero money off these one cent guides. If they are helping you during a busy time then they are taking potential profits away from the store. The slower the more likely they are to help you. Thats how I was able to Acquire the complete list of EB guides. A slow time, courtesy and care.

ATTN Gamestop and Best Buy Employee's:

If EB has the ability to sear for all there guides based on price I would imagine Those 2 store should have the same ability. Could someone please check the computer systems and let us know if this is possible ? Thanks

Wow! Thanks for the new list!

Now are those for new or used titles?

floormat

I would imagine that they only apply to new guides. the few guides they would ever take used would likely have a used sticker invalidating the upc and likely itself from the one cent guide list.

The Disgaea guide is one cent at EB. Now to find the one EB in this country that may actually have it still.

The Arc The Lad Collection hardcover Working Designs guide is $19.99 at EB (marked down from $29.99). It'll probably be worth at least twice that in a few years.

I've had store employees say 'that penny guide is sold out, but I'll sell you mine for $5'.

see that's what I mean. They think they're so friggin' slick. Why oh why would I go looking for a penny guide and end up buying it for 500x its price?!? It's still cheaper than full retail but it's not the point.....

One question.... How does this work? Do we just find that guide that corresponds ( I assume anywhere in the country) to the store and at the price, and ask them to check the price just to confirm it? Thanks a lot.

It's a viewtiful day in the neighborhood. Thanks to the list, I was able to get the pennied out Viewtiful Joe strat guide at a local gamestop, which is good, because on a scale of 1 to 10, I am not good at VJ. They had a few MK:DD guides, but they were not pennied out. Prior to the huge EB update, I only ever checked BB for guides, but the update prompted me to print out a list and bring it with me. Ironically, I didn't check EB.

P.S. I was reaching for my money, but they didn't even make me pay for it. Pretty cool, especially considering these were clerks with whom I had not dealt with before.

99 + 1.50 media mail + 2.00 to have the auction on ebay = 4.49

hmm

so they broke even minus them actually spending the time to buy the guide host auction communicate and spending a dollar driving to the post office.

It only costs 35 cents to list things cheap.

Well, just went to a local EB and they laughed when I asked them about their .01 cent guides! They said that they dont ever sell them that low! And there was some there that were on the big list, but they were not a .01 cent! I am so fucking pissed!

So, just to let you know, it still might be YMMV, or maybe I just have bad luck!!!

Well there might be a couple on the big list that are a slightly vague...I brough up a few that rang up at full price...but the ones that I found were .01

I'd say you had some bad luck...but more importantly some bad sales people.

I'd say that's one of the stores where the employees pretty much keep the guides for themselves as soon as they drop.

One thing I've noticed with EB and Gamestop, the stores in the high-traffic malls seem to have more penny guides on the shelves than the stores that get less traffic. If they're too busy dealing with customers they have less time to remove the guides from the racks.

I just picked up over 30 guides at the Gamestop where I work for a penny. We're actually -not- supposed to leave them on the shelves when they're a penny, but "cash them out" and throw them away. As such, I've been giving a home to many guides. I don't realy know their value, but of the ones I don't want to keep are:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Prima)- 7
Metroid Prime (Brady)-1
Mario Kart DD (Official Nintendo Guide)- 1
Donkey Kong Country (Official Nintendo Guide)-1
Spawn Armageddon(Brady)-2
Nightfire(Prima)-1
Whiplash(Prima)-2
ESPN basketball(Prima)-2
Grabbed by the Ghoulies(Prima)-1
Beyblade Vforce combo guide(prma)-1
YuYu Hakusho Spirit Detective(Prima)-2
WWF Raw2 for XBox(Prima)-1
Delta Force: Blackhawk Down(Prima)-2
Ciclization 3 Play the World(Prima)-1
Lords of everquest(Prima)-1
Skies of arcadia Legends(Prima)-1

I hope to continue to get more and more until I rule the strategy guide market!!

Did you have them scan it? I've been to several different EB's and other stores and usually the first thing they say if you ask if they will be .01 is NO! And look at you like you are crazy. Then they scan it and most often it is .01 and they're stupified....if you try to stay as non-confrontational as possible they'll usually be cool once they realize they are wrong, if they don't get too embarassed.

Well, just went to a local EB and they laughed when I asked them about their .01 cent guides! They said that they dont ever sell them that low! And there was some there that were on the big list, but they were not a .01 cent! I am so shaq-fuing pissed!
