View Full Version : Great. Anyone else having PSP problems already? (got dead pixels?)

Just got back from the midnight PSP release at Gamerush, fired it up, and right away noticed 2 dead pixels on the screen. May not sound like a big deal but one of them is *directly* in the middle of the screen and is annoying as hell. Gonna bring it back tomorrow...hopefuly they won't be sold-out yet and be able replace it.
So anyone else get dead pixels on their PSP or have any other problems with it?

alot of people are getting far more dead pixels than you are, and the majority of the consumers are getting psp with dead pixels..
i doubt the stores or sony will let all these people return and exchange psps over and over again...

That's bullshit. Most people returned their dead-pixled DS's with no problems, so why should this be any different? I'm going to try to exchange it for a new one anyway. Gamerush is VERY nice about returns on stuff like this, so hopefully they'll take mine back.

Maybe it's because Nintendo has Zero Dead Pixel policy. No wait, that can't be it. Wait, it is!

I just realized what I said after I posted. Of course it's different because it's SONY, not Nintendo.
Just checked the PSP board over at GameFAQ's. Seems like there is a ton of people getting dead pixels on their PSP's. Yeay, Sony!

Dust under the screen was also widely reported.
I don't want to trash the PSP, but this is typical of a Sony console at launch. Expect issues to be resolved down the road.

you're joking right the problem is IT'S SONY! Don't get me wrong I 've owned both ps1 & ps2(fav. system this gen), but they really don't have the best track record when it comes to system not breaking down, I'm on my 2nd ps2 system, so I wait to get my psp for a while..(same with ps3)

On a side note, I drove by Walmart, and Best Buy to find only a few (10-15) people in line. Sony really should have advertised more. I seriously saw my first PSP commercial today. I can't wait to get mine at EB in the morning though.

The problem is usually out of box, and does not normally develop over time. Essentially if it's perfect out of the box it'll stay perfect.

Dead pixels are created in the process of making the lcd screen, so you won't see them appear over time.
And every place should allow you to exchange it out if you do get a dead pixel. It should be considered defective, so it should be replacable just as if a dvd didnt work, etc.
A lot of people also had dead pixels with the DS's. By a lot, I mean it seemed like a lot, because they are the ones who said anything about it. I doubt it was a big perentage in actuallity.

Yeah, I don't take that as a reliable number. I'm not saying that you should be worry free, there are probably a bunch of units with dead pixels and dust under the screen among other things ("it's a Sony product"), but there are many liars on the internet as well. I remember when the DS came out, there was a poll on this board about who had a problem with their unit (I think the options were none, fuzzy screen, dead pixel, and dead/pixel with fuzzy screen) and roughly 50% of the vote was distributed among the three problem categories. I'm not saying that's impossible, but it's very unlikely. When people on this board express great admiration for the PSP and insult the DS, then claim they own a DS, I take it with a grain of salt. I'm sure an IGN poll is even less reliable, but who knows.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesnt Sony's Manual state that Dead Pixels are Normal?

Yep the manual does say that some dead pixels are normal on an lcd screen! Screw that. They need to go with a zero dead pixel policy like Samsung has. My PSP, thankfully, has all it's pixels working like ho in an alley.

Despite my constant dissing of the PSP, I was thinking about heading out to get one (Hastings is putting out 20 this morning with no preorders whatsoever). At $250, it's something to think about. Then I looked at the game list.. the only thing out right now that i'd even consider getting is probably Metal Gear Acid.. maybe Darkstalkers.. but Wipeout, Ridge Racer, Twisted Metal, THUG2.. its all been done before.. ooh, maybe NFSRivals.. but even then, in the "coming soon" section, you get Fifa Soccer, Dynasty Warriors, Midnight Club 3, NBA Street Showdown, GTA.. all games we've seen before (aside from MC3, but its also coming out on other systems).
Where's the heavy hitters? Where are the games that make me want a PSP.. like Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry, any other RPG's? Timesplitters? Tekken? Burnout? Tenchu? Fight Night? ANYTHING besides what I can already find in the bargain bin at EB?
Have they announced any of those games for PSP!? Kingdom Hearts 2 PSP would RULE. That would DEFIANTELY make me go get a PSP. I guess I'll grab a DS with Mario, Warioware and Yoshi Touch and Go instead..

It's sad in a sense. Because people will tolerate dead pixels and other defects, sony will not move to want to make better products. Everytime something launches from them it is problem ridden. The fact that the Japanese systems had this problem along with the later released US systems is a slap in the face of all buyers. Many will go back and get another, many will tolerate it and be happy that they actually got one due to the supposed "shortages" of the systems. Meanwhile Sony will tally up all sales including returns and resales and hype these HUGE launch sale numbers for the system and act like nothing ever happened. At least Nintendo stepped up to the plate and handled business right away. Sony should have known better. I can't wait to see how Many PS3 systems get returned during that launch too.

I don't get why people put Advent Children in the PSP lineup, that Movie is coming out on DVD too. And the DVD is going to have a lot more features then the UMD version, Plus you can watch the DVD on a nice Big screen TV.
Anyway I'm with you, I'm sticking with my DS untill the PSP gets a better much lineup. There is just nothing coming out on the PSP that I want to play that I can't play all ready on one of my other home consoles. Plus I just don't trust Sony to buy 1st or 2nd rev systems. (US is 2nd rev)

I was talking to a Gamestop manager the other day, and he was saying how this one guy was trying to preorder 20 PSPs. Obviously he's not going to play all of those himself, but I just imagine on all the fun he's going to have dealing with any pixel issues that come up...
Anyways, I figure by the time the next (read actually decent, non-EA) NBA game comes out for PSP, most the hardware issues will have been dealt with so that's when I'll buy one.

Sounds like its a very widespread issue. You might have to trade it in a whole bunch.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesnt Sony's Manual state that Dead Pixels are Normal?
Edit: HAHA, there will be a shortage created because each person will have to go through 2 or 3 to find one that doesnt have dead pixels!
Shortage?
No each return will still count as a sale and therefore the user base will be million immediately. Dont you understand its inflating their sell through numbers?

Wow, I'm very happy I didn't pick mine up yet. I had one preordered at Gamestop and FYE and I'm going to find out which one has the best warranty and taking that one. I was going to pick up a 2nd for whatever reason but I think I'll cancel the preorder and use the credit on something else. Still pumped to get mine though.
On a side note there seems to be zero buzz about the PSP. Here's a summary of my long drive to work this morning.
6:45 checked out the BB close to my home...no cars, not too surprising I guess.
7:30 drove past the BB by my work and there were about 3 people waiting. (pretty sad considering the following...)
7:35 went into the Walmart across the street and they had about 25 PSP's sitting there waiting for buyers, saw one guy walking out with one.

Who will get all the psp's with the dead pixels, i don't think sony will refurbish any of these since that will mean that they have to refurbish more than half of their total units, will they lower the price on these units ?, i say they will go the easy way and not allow any returns on dead pixels !

Most likely the retailers will eat the costs of any allowed returns.
And a big one will be Walmart since they are so lax on returns.
This is kind of funny that history is repeating itself and Sony has assumed Nintendos hard headed and arrogant position.

Well crap. I was actually planning on going to the midnight release last night and decided I'd take a nap around 8:30 and get up around 11:30.
Well, 11:30 turned into 2:30 a.m.
So I get up and log onto CAG and see this thread. Now, I just don't know what to do.
I still want the PSP, but if there's this much problems with the units, I really don't want to bother with it.
On one end, I'm thinking about getting my money back and putting it towards my Wombat. On the other, I'm thinking about taking the money and buying a PSTwo and a preorder on God of War.
I have about three hours before I planned to go down to Gamestop and pick up the PSP, and now I'm really undecided as to what to do.
I think I'm gonna get my $320 back, buy a PSTwo and God of War, a few PS2 games and save the rest to put it towards my car.
I want to see what Sony plans to do about this problem. I'm not going to be one of those people who will run back and forth to Gamestop exchanging systems until I get one that works the way it was suppose to.

Two questions perhaps someone could answer...
Is there gonna be a 1-2 month shortage like the DS? Or does anyone think I'll be able to get my hands on a PSP before the end of April. I say the end of April because I'll be going down to Anaheim and would like something to do in the airport, airplane, hotel, etc.
Also, is it even reasonable to think that these problems will be resolved by then?
Anyone wanna answer my questions? Can anyone answer my questions?
Probably not, because unless there is consumer outrage, Sony doesn't see it as a problem.
you know.. one thing you can do.. is bring your PSone for the airport/hotel because it only needs to plug in the wall and you already know its going to work.. thats my suggestion though.. that or just the GBA at least it works.. has decent battery life and you can get great games for it.
but if you really really want that PSP..i don't think there will be this "shortage"..i'm not plopping down 250 for the PSP right now.. hell no.. i gotta save for xbox 2

The PSP will also have to solve some technical challenges, most notably concerns about battery life. Sony estimates that a fully charged PSP battery will be good for four to six hours of game playing.
But Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi acknowledged in a Japanese press interview last month that those estimates were for playing a simple puzzle or card game with the screen dimmed, speakers turned off, and wireless connectivity disabled. Turn on all the bells and whistles and load up a graphically complex racing game, and the battery will drain faster. Nintendo's market-leading Game Boy Advance SP, by contrast, runs for more than 10 hours between charges."
it can play solitaire for only 4 hours with no sound and a dimmed screen
this means a full 3d game with sound, bright screen, and wireless won't last long at all. that's unacceptable.

i can't believe people are thinking about getting one in spite of this widespread problem. if i paid $250 for anything, it better come out of the box shiny and new and in 100% working order. i don't care if just half the pixel is dead, its going back if its not what i expected. it just sucks that each return is a positive on Sony's books.
how can stores refuse returns on defective products out of the box (referring to the GR post above)?

Maybe within a few weeks, given the uproar in the community and the media, Sony will probably have no choice but to reverse their decision to not give a damn about dead pixels.
Not likely...it's been out in Japan for how long, and these problems are still prevalent? Sony's just sent a big fuck you to the gaming community, and told them they're going to take it and pay for it and like it.

I picked mine up at midnight from Gamerush (thanks to some credit) and after looking at the mostly green home screen, I can say that my PSP has zero dead pixels. One funny thing did happen though. Good luck to whoever got that one.

i don't believe anyone said every unit has dead pixels. do pixels die in the future? i don't know much about dead pixels other than they are not good. i think what would piss me off is that sony is basically saying tough titties if your unit has dead pixels. its not part of the warranty, and we aren't fixing it...btw be sure to buy more memory and umd movies.
on a side note, i ran up to the BB and CC which are side by side. They both had a people in the return line with psp boxes. I asked them why they were returning. They said dead pixels, but we are hoping to exchange. When I went to check out the units, it looked like several boxes had been opened to test them out.

It seems to me most of the post in this topic are from people who don't own a PSP, or they simply hate sony and trying to tell people not to buy it. Seriously, stop making a big deal out of this.
I got mine and it had no dead pixels. I'd say 20% of the people in this post who actually owns a psp has maybe 1-2 dead pixels. 1-2 dead pixels shouldn't kill you, since people are saying that its not noticeable during gameplay. If it really bothers you, go get it exchanged. I'm quite positive that any place will do it, just look on your receipt.

Of course it's not unreasonable. Nor is it unreasonable to think that not all people who have a brand new console for several hours and claim it to be perfect are entirely accurate. If, as many people have said thus far, DP are not noticable during gameplay, then there is a considerable likelihood that some people have not yet discovered their DP; what proportion? I don't know. Some? Undoubtedly.
Some people here have become rather snarky and said "Oh, hey you DP-having crybabies, shut up and exchange it already!" To you, I say that the ambiguity of Sony's willingness to repair/replace the PSP on the basis of having dead pixels is more of a problem than the dead pixels themselves. Sony Japan was not accepting returns/repairs for dead pixels, and the jury is still out in the states (though you are most likely safe if you bought an ESA through your retailer). Our problem is not that there are DP, but that Sony's attitude was (1) to release a console with a high rate of defective screens and (2) tell the consumer to go fuck themselves if they did not like it. I'm not so certain why those of you are quick to defend Sony. Is the PSP fantastic? Yes, in many ways. Is it (and by virtue, Sony) flawless? Your mother.

Our problem is not that there are DP, but that Sony's attitude was (1) to release a console with a high rate of defective screens and (2) tell the consumer to go shaq-fu themselves if they did not like it. I'm not so certain why those of you are quick to defend Sony. Is the PSP fantastic? Yes, in many ways. Is it (and by virtue, Sony) flawless? Your mother.
myke.
First of all, I didn't realize that we were in 3rd grade. Second of all, I am not defending Sony, but it seems there are people on this site that are quick to jump on Sony and the second someone says there system is fine there must be some consipiracy or they just don't know what they are talking about. or that they are some Sony fanboy.
I agree with you 100% that the problem is not really the DPs but rather the fact that Sony would release the systems if they are indeed defective. It seems though that people are more likely to come here and report a problem than to report that everything is a-ok, thus making the problem appear to be more widespread than it is. I don't think either of us has the 100% correct answer to just how big this problem is, but you seem to have already made up your mind.
I happen to agree with the notion that buying launch hardware is risky and that coupled with the price of the system and games made the decision to wait to get one easy for me.

dont dead pixels only show up when the screen is black?
Some dead pixels will not show up when the screen black, only when suppose to be colored in. Some will show when the screen is black. Read up about it, it's been a huge problem ever since LCD screens were introduced to the market.
Dead pixels really are a pain in the ass, but if you've bought a laptop or LCD monitor, you'd know how common they are. Most companies won't replace an LCD monitor unless it has 9 dead pixels. Imagine dropping 500$ and having 8 dead pixels, you're SOL. I know that was one reason I bought an Alienware laptop, they had a very good dead pixel replacement policy. (1 in the Center, or 3 on the outside)
The fact that the PSP has NO replacement on ANY amount of dead pixels is disgusting. It doesn't help that it is such a small screen, either. Not that I thought of buying one before, but now I definitely won't!

I've got 9-12 Dead Pixels.
The funny thing is, you dont even notice it when a game is on. I mean, this isnt a Gameboy...the resolution is much higher and the pixels are much smaller.
I'm taking my back to Gamestop cause I bought a PRP on the PSP and it has 9-12 dead pixels.
But if you have 1-2 dead pixels and you're still bitching....damn, you need a hug.
I wouldn't plan on picking one up on ebay. How pissed would you be to receive one with dead pixels, and no way of returning the damn thing?!
Sorry to hear some of you are having these problems. Hope everyone (eventually) gets a system without DP's.

I'm sorry, but it seems you're taking this a bit too seriously. I think the PSP is great for me, because I have no dead pixels. No poll results will change that. However, I think Sony needs to get its head out of its ass and rectify this problem, even if it turns out to not be as widespread as we originally thought it was. That said, I would be really pissed if I was stuck with dead pixels.
As for you suggesting that I will "refer back" to that statement about inaccuracy later on if the results show a majority of PSPs here with dead pixels, that's just retarded. I am not that childish, and like I said - I have no argument here. I own a DS and a PSP and am really sick of all the Fanboy BS slamming one or the other, so I figured I'd at least legitimize the arguments (on BOTH sides) by gathering some raw numbers.
And honestly, I don't give two stinky shits "who wins" this poll...to me it is not a contest the results of which I will want to refute later.

Hey man, I'll be the first to admit that Sony needs to get it together on this one. That said, you asking "To everyone who bought a PSP.. how does it feel to get shafted so bad?" does sound a bit shitty. You keep saying things like "everyone" is having problems, when that is simply not true. There are many of us who are enjoying perfect PSPs, and most of us feel genuine sympathy (not a desire to ridicule) for those who got DPs. Also, while there are a worrisome number of CAGs having problems, it is very likely that there are tons of CAGs with perfect systems who are too busy playing them to be on this board right now. Hell, I only put the thing down because I had to come to class!
As for me not "doing my research" on which particular consoles you and your brother own - I'm sorry, but I couldn't care less what you do/don't own when you make an ass comment like the one you made. It was the principle, especially since you aren't really known for your *ahem* nice comments toward the PSP...
And yes, Sony did give some people one hell of a shaft.

By that I don't mean anything too noticeable but enough to where I notice it. Then again I'm anal about my stuff so it might be something only I would see. Does anyone else's psp have this "problem"?

On the majority of screens being ok:
Yeah, that's fine. If 51% of the screens are A-ok, and 49% of screens have a DP, the majority are still fine.
That's still not acceptable at all. There have been a surprising amount of reports of people getting broken PSPs. Are the majority broken? No. Does that matter? No.
One person gets killed, thats 0.00000000014285% of the world's population. Thats a very, very insignificant percentage.... but don't people still get bothered by it?
That's the point. Maybe I worded it poorly. People are saying that "the majority of screens are fine, so what's the big deal?" Well we've already gotten reports into the double digits of people who got PSPs with DPs. This is very troubling, regardless of what the percentages are.
It doesn't matter if the majority of screens are fine. There are enough reports of faulty screens to make it unacceptable. Let's assume that 20% of PSPs have DPs. That's only 20% compared to 80%, but at the same time, GOD DAMN that's 20%!

If the damn thing scratches it, why is that my fault?

I'm just like you. I want my system to be perfect, and if I notice something wrong with it, it will bother me to no end.
I didn't notce anything like that with my disc cover, but I thought it seemed really fragile. It just doesn't seem very sturdy at all.

Why's it matter so much to you though? You've got a better chance at getting a system that is perfectly fine than getting one that has dead pixels. If you get one with dead pixels, exchange it for one without dead pixels.

...the company pulled all the strings it could to make sure there were 1 million PSPs ready for the North American launch.
i guess we know now which strings were pulled as well as corners cut. sub contract a cheapass company to provide a third party screen, and pack the boxes in dirt to save on packing material. j/k
I got mine. One dead pixel. It isn't too bad since it is in the right corner. I don't know if I will return it or not...it's not really noticeable and I got the EB warranty so I may wait to see how the system holds up over the year.
For all the defects aside.....I was pretty hesitant about this system...but after playing and watching spider-man 2 it is truly a site to see. The screen is gorgeous. Thanks TRU\EB for making mine free!

What's worse is that I think a lot of people have had horendous problems with Sony products upon launch.....but as eager gamers we continue to rush out and buy their products as soon as we can. All that does is show them how great a success it is....arrogance persists and we as gamers lose.
It's not fair to the current buyer of the product and it's not fair to future buyers as the product is not corrected. Sony got me twice in the past when I rushed out to get a PS1 and a PS2....they won't be getting my business on the PSP for a while...I want that fucker pristine if I'm dropping $200+. Anyway....at least some people are getting good units.

I'm curious if any of the people with the japanese version are suffering the DP problem, I mean there's technically no difference in the units.
But then again with the frequency of how often DPs can show up in LCD screens and the huge number of LCD devices they have there (phones, tvs, random public ad screens) maybe they;re just more used to it.
As to whether or not SOny has given anyone they shaft, if the japanese didnt care so much they probably assumed we wouldnt either but with all the complaints that seem to be getting flung around maybe they still will make some consession now that their production rate is better than it was in the first couple of months. Who can tell? I mean it is still just the first 14 hours of the thing's existance in american hands.

The first one I got had a dead pixel on the left. The 2nd one had a dead pixel in the very center that was far worse than the first one I had. The third one seems to have no dead pixels but it has a lot of dust under the screen. Plus, even though it was supposed to be new (don't trust store employees) it has scratches across the front! I don't know about you guys but dropping $250 on a toy is a lot of money for me. And the whole damn thing is giving me an ulcer. Really. I am not here to talk crap about Sony, I don't love them but I have never had a prob with any of their products. That is, until now.

add me to the crowd where i was sitting on the fence, and am now running far away from buying this thing.
forget about just the dead pixels and the screens. if im paying 50 bucks a portable game, i better be damn well enjoying all of it, and that includes seeing all it has to offer ( NO DEAD PIXELS)

As I understand it any electronic device with a screen will catch dust in it if it;s not an airtight seal. Dust and lint are attracted to electromagnetic forces so if air can get there so can dust.

If the product is worth it =p. you just have to approach it smartly. I MADE sure to check it before I left BB and ensure ther are no dead pixels.

the question : is anyone gonna feel the need, who gets shafted by sony's BS policy on replacing "normally dead pixel included" screens, going to file a class action lawsuit anytime soon?

What urks me is the arrogance of Sony. As stated above people still flock after getting burned 2 & 3 times by them.
The other thing is just like Microsoft and the whole intergration thing. This is a game machine and should be looked after as such. Sony cliams its the walkaman of the 21st century but all the walkman did was play tapes or later cd's?
It didnt do anything else.
Now looking at the comments made last night at the New York Party when they didnt even sell through their 500 stock supply!
C-Daly talking up SCEA prez Kaz Hirai about the PSP. Hirai’s money quote: “If someone told you that the PSP is a portable gaming device, shoot these people. The PSP is not a portable gaming device, it is really a convergent portable entertainment device.” You have your orders, people; shoot anyone on sight who calls the PSP a gaming device."
Now what the hell is that all about. We have these blindly rabid fanboys running out and touting the PSP chant and Sony isnt even acknowledging it as a gaming device.

That's part of what I'm talking about. Should you have to check a product that you $250 for before you leave?? Why can't you just pay for it and leave without a problem?? For $250, Sony should be providing a bit higher quality in their product. It's obviously not happening to everyone, but if more than 15-20% of people are leaving the stores with dead pixels in their PSPs...that's a serious problem. It ceases to be a random occurance.....fuck, cars are recalled with lower percentages of a problem.
I feel waiting is the best policy for people that are on the fence about the PSP. If you're not sure....wait for revisions....they'll come if enough people bitch about the PSP's shortcomings.

There are "Dead Pixels" and there are "Stuck Pixels".
Dead Pixels do not turn on. They look black on all colors.
Stuck Pixels are stuck
