The Tribes community is up in arms over an announcement from Sierra/Vivendi Universal Games (VUG) to drop support for multiplayer shooter Tribes: Vengeance.

There was only a brief message on the game's official message boards from associate brand marketing manager Guy Welch. "Development on the previously announced Tribes: Vengeance 1.1 update has been cancelled," he said. "No further updates to Tribes: Vengeance are planned."

Welch has not responded to requests for comment as of press time. Board member 'ipv6' had a quick explanation for the publisher's silence on the issue. "They are a business. There isn't a need to explain to their customers because well ... customer service isn't one of their priority," he said in a thread.

Frustrated gamers are taking the situation into their own hands, organizing boycotts of VUG products. "I will not ever buy any of their products again," said board user 'darkaynjil', adding he is "in the process of writing several magazines whose focus is PC gaming about their lack of support and the bugs in their programs."

Tribes: Vengeance was released last October.

Something is not all well in the jungle.. I was looking forward to picking this up when it hits $15 or under! Not a good sign if they dump support for it.

This is pathetic of Sierra and VUG to do. I remember playing Tribes 1, that game was great for multiplayer. Its just not right to drop support on a game, that was released...what 5-6 months ago? Sad...

It's really too bad when developers/publishers decide to not to release patches to a game, especially when they decided not to release even a single patch.

personally, I do not blame them. Why should Irrational go through the effort of patching a game no one bought?

seems like devoting their resources to Freedom Force would be a smarter move

The owners of VU were hoping to have sold off the various brands and assets by now. They may end up shutting down almost everything and have a fire sale to be rid of it.

Sierra hasn't been Sierra since 99. There aren't even any original Sierra offices open anymore. Sad when it happens to a company you like.

I still think of them as that little company started by a couple in a trailer park in Simi Valley. (Just a few miles away from my then home, Thousand Oaks.) Aside from the games, the company had a presence in my life because my sister lived in Coarsegold while working in Yosemite during the same period Sierra was based there, so a lot of her friends were Sierra employees. Later, a lot of people at Cinemaware were former Sierra people. I knew so many Sierra people over the years I came to feel a connection to the company even though their products didn't command any more of my attention in the 8-bit days than others like Broderbund and Synapse.

Perhaps they've given up on selling off VU piecemeal. Says here they've even recently purchased a developer for their stable.

I love this bit:
"The purchase of Radical Entertainment reinforces our commitment to strengthening VU Games' creative talent and internal console development capabilities," said Bruce Hack, CEO of VU Games. "Radical's focus will remain on entertainment-based console games for current and next generation platforms."

As opposed to those consoles focusing on boredom?

if I edited anything you said, it was not intentional, more getting used to the new boards.

anyways, Gamespot said that sales of WoW and HL2 probably changed their minds on selling off VU games
