I'm not sure where to put this...but I picked up 2 copies of Astro Boy on my way to Niagara Falls today, sold back one copy to FYE for $18 store credit. The cashier wouldn't let me get the $ on a gift card...so I got the slip of "merchandise credit". Anyways, after walking around the mall, we realized I should ask for a gift card for the amount on the merchandise credit...the (same) cashier asked the manager and she said "we're not SUPPOSED to..."
So I did. Got the $18 onto a gift card! The system had no problem handling the transaction, so I don't understand why they said they weren't supposed to...anyone work at FYE (or know people who do) that knows what the big deal is?
I dont get what the big deal is, I'm selling back "my" game for their store credit, not like I'm taking their $$$ coz I still gotta spend it on something in the store, which they make at least some profit off from...

well, it says on the coupon "not good with other coupons or offers" but it may be sort of like getting them to combine a price match with a best buy GGC(ive done this at least a dozen times, but some dont have that good of luck)

Hey I hate my BB for their lack of customer service but you kind of screwed the cashier. First we are cheating by making copies of copies - if BB was smart they wouldn't have done that in the first place but that's their fault. Actually, nothing is stopping BB from deciding to stop accepting the coupons since they aren't original.
Well, like I said, I don't mind the fact that they're not allowing us to use the coupon on subsequent trips-- my friend fessed up that he had used a coupon already on our first trip. My main problem was that the manager was a total bitch and left when she felt the conversation was over. It was incredibly rude. That was my problem.
Also, I had a problem with the second manager on our second trip making up nonexistent rules for the coupon. "The game had to be 19.99 and up" and all of that. That was ridiculous.
And finally, I was just posting a general hate for Best Buy. I was in no way taking offense to the fact we weren't able to use the coupon for like the fifth time, but the fact we ran into some nasty managers and it wasn't the first time.
For the people who are just using the coupon with a $5 game - Why don't you guys just buy another game along with the $5 ones???? You can just return the game afterwards, it shouldn't be that much trouble considering you're getting a free game out of it. Just have the cashier scan the $5 game first, say you want to check the price before buying, it should be that simple.
So... you're having us pick out a game that we have no plans on keeping, coming back to the store and returning it and sending them through all of that trouble? What if we picked out a 20 dollar game and the five dollar discount wasn't applied to our "Free" game, but the 20 dollar game? We'd get the fifteen some dollars back and nothing at all was accomplished.
Also, check out Best Buy Sux.org (www.bestbuysux.org) Literally about a thousand horror stories about Best Buy.

Hola,
Total newb to CAG, but u guys rock. already I'm gonna save $20 bones on GTA, and I'm trying to get the coupon thing to work. I'm still a little worried though, the clowns at my BB are total pricks and I'm guessing they won't take the printed coupon b/c it says no copies...even if they handed printed ones out...anyone have in luck in TPA, FL?
Oh yeah and for the newb, can anyone define GGC for me?
Thanks,

GGC is Gamer's Gift Card--there's an entire thread explaining it over on the Request a Deal Board :)

As I mentioned before just say you want to check the cheap game's price first, that should do the trick. Buying and returning - Consider it the price you pay for a free game without getting into an argument. And maybe I misinterpreted your first email, but it felt like you were angry that you weren't able to get the free game.
I'm not defending BB, but the employee that probably got into trouble because of the sale. If the cashier doesn't ring it up let it go because there's not much you can do at that point; don't stir things up. And I also agree that BB sucks but all store's kind of do. Don't all stores try to BS their way out of things. EB and Gamestop employee's will hide sought after games, etc. For example I tried to pick up Rez at my local Gamestop. when I asked about it they lied to me and said it was "defective". I just let it go and walked out of the store, never intending to go back to that store ever again.

Everybody, don't buy an extra game as "cover", only to return it later. Pick up your $5/Free game, and just get a Gift Card to go with it... preferably one with a coupon on the back, and one where you define the amount to go on it.
I pick the green, Xbox-themed one with the '$5 off any 29.99 or higher Xbox purchase' coupon. Just put $5 on the card, and walk out without drawing any attention that the game was actually free.

Ok, i'm a little new to the live of a CAG (but the few deals i've scored have been sweet), but for this one, let me get it straight...i print off a bunch of coupons, go to Best Buy, pick up a 4.99 PS2 game (and a gift card or something to pull attention away from the deal)...use a coupon, and, assuming the cashier doesn't care, get the game for free?

Don't bother with the excess BS. Just print off a coupon, take it in, and get the game.

While I'm also a newbie CAG, I am going to run some distraction by purchasing something else too, when I try this out tomorrow. I think that as long as you give the cashier some money, they'll be alot happier/less likely to hasstle you. Be nice too. That should help. :) And if all else fails, play dumb, and be like..."I dunno...they were just handing these out back awhile ago...something about sony's 'gameboy' or something..."
(note: i know that it's not a gameboy...i'm playing dumb)

Not sure what TPA stands for... but if it's Tampa, I've used the coupon a ton of times, at the Best Buy in Saint Petersburg, Tampa, and Clearwater.
Never had a problem.

i thought up a solution to the problem of accidentally having the coupon applied to a game you're only buying with intent to return.
Instead of buying a $5 PS2 (or PSP) game, and another PS2 game (PSP game), buy a $5 PS2 game and a $5 GBA game...or Xbox...or PC or whatever. That way, you still look like you're there to buy stuff and are just taking *normal* advantage of a coupon, but they cannot apply the coupon to the wrong item.
I'm sure somebody else must have thought of this, but I don't recall seeing it posted here...
Good luck!

Wow, I can't find any copies of anything (minus assloads of Astro Boy). I got one copy of Psi Ops...and 9 copies of Astro Boy. Which would be awesome I guess if I had an FYE or something near me, but sadly I don't. In fact, the only place I could find that would even take the damn game was EB Games, and they only offered one dollar per copy.
And I bought all of those at the same time, so I guess I have one hell of an awesome BB. The manager was there just because I guess she was talking with an employee and asked what I was doing. When I explained it, she just chuckled and didn't mind at all. I'd feel bad about raping that BB and not letting other CAGs nearby get in on it, but since I live in central Arkansas I don't see that being too big of a problem.
And I soooooo wanted copies of Tomb Raider for free pizza :(

Welcome to the world of CAG, newbie, and before you get flammed to kingdom come, let me give you one of the founding principles of CAG: don't be greedy, just cheap. Hording games like that is NOT the purpose of these boards, and just marks you as a black sheep. In the future, pick up one or two copies, but no more--leave the others for fellow cheapies who might want a free game. Or if you do pick up multiple copies, bring them here to the boards and just sell them for the cost it takes for you to ship 'em plus a small handling fee. In short, do NOT horde, unless you're buying copies for fellow members of CAG.
Megaten
06-12-2005, 07:22 AM
Wow, I'm glad I'm hording in Arkansas. Pretty sure no one else was going to grab them. I'm also glad I'm a noob just because I've recently signed up. I most assuredly haven't been here since around 2003. Nope, sure haven't.
wampa8jedi
06-12-2005, 08:52 AM
megaten--Get defensive if you'd like, but if you can't appreciate the fact that hording is a bad idea (and one that is shunned on these boards), that's your loss... although I find it ironic that you complained about there being a lack of the other titles.... Seriously, you gained what, $8 bucks of credit? And deprived up to eight other people of a free game. A far better approach is to grab one or two copies, and then go back a week later--if there are still some in stock, grab another. Or, pick them up and sell them at cost plus shipping to people on the boards who couldn't find a copy.

No, actually I still have them. Minus a few I gave to my nephew and his friend. Besides, I got in on this deal late, so I doubt a weeks grace period is needed. I don't see how you can find it hording when I'm the only one who could even use this deal in my area. Find me some other guys in the Little Rock, Arkansas area that are pissed and I'll gladly meet em and give em a couple copies. In fact, if anyone here wants some copies, I'd be happy to ship em to em. I know a lot of guys are getting good trade in value for em, so why should I not help some guys out. I think you took the whole situation in a skewed perspective. I just think it is funny how it happened, and I'm not trying to screw any fellow CAGs out of crap.
And glad you decided to chirp in Gotcha because you misunderstood what I said. Haha, and I wouldn't call Astro Boy something good in my hands :)
EDIT: Oh yea Gotcha, I tried to get a movie with one and it didn't work, but it could be a YMMV sorta thing...guess if the cashier screws up or something.

What's the big deal? Technically, this coupon is not supposed to be used with games that are on sale, and Spider-Man 2 is on sale, at the moment. They weren't being unfair or anything.
Remember, we're the ones ripping them off here. We really shouldn't complain when they don't give us sale items at the discount.

The system doesn't automatically take the $5 off of sale items (X-Men Legends was on sale for $14.99). Most of the times the cashier will perform a manual override to take $5 off, but as you see it is YMMV.

This coupon is the best, I picked up Scorpion King for PS2 on thursday, that is about the 7th Game I've got for free. It crack's me up as they are giving me discount on top of discount. And of course you can use the free game's at GR in the trade 3 get P/O 5$ deals. You can walk away with a good 30-40$ profit.

its totally ymmv, My coupons didnt go through for star ocean and norrath today, but patiently waited while she asked mgr, and then overrided. (it doesnt automatically come up on sale items. It appears, on normal items, its slow as hell, but will come through on its own, I usually tell them to wait a sec while it updates), got both for 15$ total (used one 5$ reward zone cert, as well).
If I ever get one of the made up answers of why it dont work, i tell them nicely thats not the reason, and ask to try again, if not no biggie, i got 4 other best buys, sorta close, so I am gonna get it, even of it take a few tries. Just say thanks and move on.
But ymmv---love the answer got the other day for trying to get conflict desert storm and bad boys (yeah i know, wanted to see if it really was as bad as the reviews say and figured i could trade it out later if it really blew), said at first, it will only let you use it once per sale, I told her no, done twice before together with two games. Then it was oh your reward zone is detecting the two attepmts, that must be it, nope done the rewardzone thing everytime. Nope wont take it, okay, then take one off thanks. Sale completed. Please ring it up seperate as its for a friend anyway. Okay no problem, even rewardzone carded the sucker......be persisitent, yet polite. (if she wasnt going to do it, was gonna go drop purchase off at the car, and come right back anyway, and try a dif cashier if possible.) but didnt need to.

That's not the point. I don't care about going through the effort of doing that, but rather putting THEM through the effort. I worked at Target, so I'd be pissed if people were buying merchandise they had no intention on keeping.
I wasn't angry about not getting the game. Policy is policy, but the managers were real bitches.

...I know he probably got in trouble because of that sale. Like I said. And I felt horrible he was getting in trouble because his supervisor wanted to make up rules about the coupon. That's the issue I had. We didn't stir up things as much as we talked about the situation rationally while the bitches were being bitches. =p

I find the most irritating part of being a CAG is when deals are given 8 billion extra restrictions after they've been around for a week or so.

well, it's official that in my area of all the local BBs the only $5 free games left are NCAA... probably cuz I bought everything else. SOrry to anyone living in my area... but the good news is that NCAA sells for of an average of at least $16, so that's not too bad.

Agreed. This coupon rocks. Even with the limited number of $4.99 games or $9.99 games some people have been getting free games and other (like me) have been having the equivalent of CC $5 sales whenever we find a $9.99 game.

Forgot to post, Oh yaeh love this coupon mucho mucho. Got Spy Hunter (traded it in long long ago, but GH this time. No biggie I guess) for $5 today and my friend picked up Metal Arms. The only other $9.99 games that I'm still thinking about getting are Stuntman and VF4 if I can find the time next weekend and make the money. That's one of the ironies of being cheap and a CAG, you've gotta spend money to be cheap .

Let's say I see a copy of Madden 2004, Psi-Ops and Astro Boy, can I get all of those for free in that same visit, or would I have to go to different Best Buys or come back later? Can you use the same coupon for multiple games?

Depends on the store, and the cashier. I've used the same coupon for two games before, both ended up free, no problems. Your best bet is to take three coupons, one for each game. If they say only one at a time, just go back through the line, thus starting a new transaction.

Yeah, you'll usually only be able to get one game per trip, and only one game per coupon. At least, 99% of the time, that's how it is. Some very lucky CAGs have reported using one coupon and getting $5 off on multiple items (such as clariste, above), but this is pretty rare.
Regarding getting multiple games per visit...most cashiers start getting suspicious if you come in and go out several times in a row, each time leaving with a free game, by using a coupon which you seem to have an infinite supply of. ;)
Your best bet is to plan on making separate trips, and using one coupon per visit (the 6-sheet is ideal, if you want several).

This coupon is great!! Picked up Star Ocean: Til the End of Time today for $9.99!
No hassle at all, the cashier just scanned it in and it was applied automatically.
I didn't see a whole lot else to tempt me, although I was debating Katamari Damacy for $15, but in the end I didn't get it because that's not really a "deal" since you can normally pick it up for that much with a GGC.
Anyway, thanks OP!!

----- I got rejected for the first time using the $5 coupon.
I was in a rush since the store was about to close, so I grabbed the only $4.99 game I could find (Psi-Ops) but the cashier rang it up and saw $0.00. She got all red in the face and then started reading the fine print... she told me since this was a "clearance" price, so the coupon is invalid.
No biggie though. I have one copy already and making a big scene would only increase the chances of BB cracking down on the $5 coupon... Ordinarily when I get any of these "free" games, I buy something else with it (like GTA: SA) and I never get hassled.
----- Earlier in the day at another BB, I picked up Champions of Norrath for $10... The coupon didn't lower it to $9.99... but the manager came over and typed in her password and whala! $9.99.

From the following eBay page about coupons:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/manufacturers-coupons.html
eBay permits the listing of valid coupons on its site, with some limitations. Please see ’Additional Information’ to learn more about what limits are placed on the sale of coupons. eBay is committed to working with the coupon industry to help ensure that eBay is not a venue for fraudulent coupon-related transactions and to providing its users with a safe place to trade.
Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:
Listing cancellation
Limits on account privileges
Account suspension
Additional Information
The following limits are placed on the sale of coupons on eBay:
Expired Coupons: The sale of recently expired coupons is not permitted on eBay, as such coupons serve no valid purpose and could be used in a fraudulent manner. Collectible coupons that clearly cannot be redeemed may be permitted.
Electronic "scanned" coupons: All coupons sold through eBay must be physically delivered to the buyer, and may not be delivered by electronic means for home printing. Further, to reduce the potential for coupon abuse, eBay asks that sellers refrain from placing clear, unaltered scans of coupons in their listings that could be copied, printed and redeemed in stores. The sale of scanned or photocopied coupons may violate federal copyright laws, and sellers of such unlawful items could face prosecution under federal law. eBay will not tolerate such transactions through its site.
Bulk coupon sales: Bulk coupon listings are defined as listings that contain more than 20 coupons for the same item, or more than 100 total coupons. If it is unclear how many coupons are offered, the listing will be considered in violation. Coupon inserts (packets of coupons typically found in newspapers) are limited to a maximum of 5 per listing, unless the seller indicates in the listing that the quantity of coupons for sale is under 100 total coupons.
Coupons for "free" products: Coupons for free products, with no purchase required, are limited to two per listing. Internet home printed coupons are also limited to 2 per listing.
Why does eBay have this policy?
eBay is often asked whether manufacturers' coupons, such as coupons from newspapers, booklets, mailings or magazine circulars, can be sold on its site. Generally, many coupons are issued without any valid restrictions on transfer or sale, and can be listed on eBay.
However, some coupons contain terms that explicitly forbid their transfer or sale. eBay urges sellers to read the terms on all coupons carefully before listing, and to respect the intentions of the coupon issuer by refraining from selling coupons contrary to their specific terms. eBay itself will not enforce non-transferability clauses printed on coupons, and has no information on whether the issuers of these coupons may legally enforce limitations printed on the coupons.
Since eBay does not possess the coupons or have knowledge of the coupons' terms or circumstances surrounding the issuance of those coupons, coupon sellers are encouraged to consult with the manufacturers and legal counsel before listing coupons that explicitly forbid transfer or sale on eBay. Sellers may not avoid potential issues with coupon issuers by claiming to price the value of the labor involved in clipping the coupons, rather than the coupons themselves. Under eBay rules, the coupons themselves will be treated as the item of value being sold. Buyers should also note that retailers might decline to accept coupons that have been obtained in a manner that violates the printed terms on the coupon.
eBay supports the efforts of manufacturers and retailers around the world to reduce fraud in the coupon industry, including coupon counterfeiting and redemption fraud.

where i live, cc and bb are across the street from each other, but at the same time, i got the logitech psp home theater speakers for 50 at cc, and they are awesome, i suggest you buy them if you have a psp, great for watching movies

FYI- Today I was rejected at my local Best Buy from using the $5 coupon off a $4.99 game (NBA Live 2004). Anyways, here's how the conversation went.
Cashier (Barbara): I'm sorry, I don't think we're accepting that coupon anymore.
Me: Excuse me?
Barbara: Yeah, I think I heard the managers saying we aren't taking that coupon anymore.
Me: Oh really, why's that?
Barbara: Apparently people have been printing them off of the web and bringing them in, but they don't have the price limitation of $19.99 and up that the original had.
Me: Ummmmm... are you sure about that? Cause this is the original that I picked up back in March when the PSP came out and it never said anything about a price limitation.
Barbara: Let me talk to the manager real quick.
ME: mmmm kay (*thinking fuck, now I'm getting black listed... bye bye best buy)
Barbara explains situation to dude manager. DUde manager says he doesn't know, let me go talk to my manager. Now I'm realling thinking this is fucked up. Just say no and I'll leave. It's a stupid game anyways, lol.
While dude manager is gone, me and Barbara start chatting it up about the coupon. Basically, I explained a few common sense things that she had no answer to, but still didn't want to honor the coupon. Told her that even if someone were to scan it into their computer and erase something on there that said only for games 19.99 and up, the barcode would still be the same as the original coupon. Therefore, even if the wording on the coupon said, use this coupon to buy every game in stock for free everyday, forever, when scanned into the computer, it wouldn't work cause the computer knows it's $5 off. It also knows if there are limitations. For example, I believe the GGC has a limitation of 19.99 and up. So if I tried to use it on this 4.99 game it would say screw you. However, this coupon does not. She says, "I dunno, maybe they changed the barcode too." To which I responded that even if someone knew how to change all those random lines into something comprehendable, it wouldn't matter because it's not inputted into the Best Buy computers. Therefore, the computer would just say, what the fuck is that thing? Granted, you could manually override it, but in this case, you're not. You're scanning it in and it's accepting it. And she says, "Well, I don't know, but the game is 4.99 and the coupon is for $5 so I can't do it anyways." "But ma'am, you can. It will only credit me 4.99 and print out the receipt and we can all go on with our merry lives. I promise you it will not tell you to give me a penny." She tells me she'll go get the manager since he's taking forever.
As she walks away, I see the manager making a photocopy of the coupon, hands it to some other dude (probably the other manager) and then comes over. He tells me that (1) the original coupon was actually only about half the size of the one I was turning in (I was using the full page one), (2) It did have a price limitation of 19.99 on it, and (3) I couldn't use it for a 4.99 game anyways, since 5 is not 4.99. Told him that while the original may have been half of a page, this is the coupon that I picked up in March for the PSP release. Therefore, if it was smaller and had a limitation on it, that is not what Best Buy gave to me. I then repeated everything I told Barbara to him. After he repeated that this wasn't the original, I asked him to see an original. He told me that he did not have an original as they weren't handing them out anymore. It was at this point that Barbara interjected and said she would search the registers to see if anyone else had handed one in today. She found one which looked to be one from a six-sheet (although of horrible quality). After looking it over we all saw that the wording was exactly the same as mine.
At this point it was obvious that I wasn't getting my game and making a scene would only get me black-listed or something, so I simply told them thank you for explaining the situation, sorry for any trouble, and I left (without the game or the coupon).
So what should I/we think of this? Has anyone heard this excuse before? If so, perhaps something is being issued by Corporate saying not to accept it. If not, then my BB is just full of shit and I'll take a couple months hiatus from them (they're all out except for NBA Live 2004 anyways). Should I write to complain to corporate, just the head manager of that store, or nobody cause it'll only make things worse? And who's bringing in the freakin 6-sheet coupons to the Best Buy in El Cajon, CA??? Any other comments/suggestions? Sorry this was so long.

Warner1281, that post of yours makes me think that the shit has finally hit the fan. Probably too many people (or just people that don't know how to do it inconspicuously) might have messed up the whole coupon. But before I am willing to give up on this coupon, I think I'll wait for some other confirmation that the jig is up ont he coupon, but I really can't think as to why they would do it now.
My rule of thumb with this coupon (and in generall with Best Buy Corporation) is that I try to do the transaction as inconspicous as I can. I do this by buying another game along with it, buying some movie, buying a drink, anything that'll sort of get there attention of the matter. I try to go to friendly cashier or ones that I know were checking me out in past exchanges. Generally the women tend to be the ones that are easier to deal with since they don't care about v-games or electronics or much of what BB sells in particualar. I use the big coupon (the one that was said to have been like the original), I don't go with the six sheet or any of the other ones since I don't want to fucked while at BB with them.
And my number one rule when it comes to BB is that if you have multiple BBs in your area, or at least more than one, is to try and revolve between stores as much as possible. Go one week to one store and another week to another. If you dod it this way than it's less suspicious.

It really pisses me off when a good thing is ruined by a bunch of greedy a-holes. I bet that many stores don't except them because people tried to get 20 free copies of Tomb Raider, or something like that. That's usually how it happens. The Target raincheck substitution was ended because people were getting 20 rainchecks when they had a sale on Madden. They had that policy for nearly 20 years, then a few people ruin it for everybody.

I don't think that's the problem at all.
I never had one problem getting a 4.99 game for free, and I never had a problem getting $5 dollars off any purchase, until the coupon had a problem going through for the Spider-Man 2 on sale.
I think it's because of people abusing it (though I'm not seeing how... maybe getting 5 free games at once?), and now the rampant Ebay sales of the coupon... this was bound and determined to happen sooner or later, and I'm surprised it took until June for Best Buy to figure out what the hell was going on.
But don't just blame it solely on the people getting free games.
Aww shit...the jig is up. Such an awesome coupon. But I guess it was bound to happen. It happens from one deal site to the next. The idiots get a hold of a good deal and ruin it for us all. Idiots meaning hoarders, ebayers, etc. I'm amazed it lasted this long, from March till now. Hopefully the coupon will still be good at some places for $9.99 games (those were the main ones I used it on as I couldn't find too many $4.99 games) and even as a substitition for a GGC.

I still have a few coupons that were handed out a Best Buy, and if they stop honoring it, I don't even think they will honor an original coupon. Corporate won't even care. I had a coupon for $5 off any Interact accessory coupon from a Best Buy coupon booklet and the manager wouldn't let me get a GBA case for $2.99. I complained to corporate and their answer was that MANUFACTURER'S coupons usually have restrictions (it was a Best Buy issued coupon!) and the manager's decision was final.

I don't think this coupon works in any of the Best Buys around the bay area. I have been to three different BBs here and the coupon never worked for me automatically. The only way to get it to work is having a manager to do an override (so getting those free games will be next to impossible).

I only had to have them override the computer 3 times. But on the other 3 times it went through and was fine. The last time I used a coupon was last Sunday and it went right through, all the cashier had to do was a total and then hit yes to allow the deals to go through (I was also buying a DS with the current promo).
It's sad to see these coupons being rejected now. They were enough of an incentive to buy $19.99 games like Katmari Damacy and Def Jam Fight for NY for only $15.

It's quite possible that this coupon "cancellation" is only per district/region/whatever. Before getting worked up about it I'm going to see what happens at my local store. I used a coupon on Sunday no problem. It sucks for those of you that have been turned down, but I think there's a good chance that some of us may be in the clear.

I second this. I'm going to try another BB in my area tomorrow and see what happens. Most likely this only one or 2 BB being full of shit. However, I think that the people in these areas should probably cool it with the coupon for a while and maybe things will blow over. We'll see.
Yeah, unless this all came down nation-wide just today (Tues), it is a YMMV. I used it to get Star Ocean for $10 on Monday evening. I guess we'll find out in the AM if others can still use it. There wasn't anything else I wanted to get now anyway, but it sure would be nice to get future $15 sale games (like Star Ocean) for $10, so I had definitely hoped it ran till Dec 31st as advertised (though that was probably a pretty stupid move on Best Buy's part - why make the thing last so long?).

I got Astro Boy (PS2) free in Jackson, Tn. with the coupon w/ no problems about a week ago. Also I used it to get Xmen Legends for 9.99 plus I got the "making of" dvd free in Clarksville, Tn, but the computer rang the coupon up as 0.00, so the cashier manually entered the discount. Best Buy's coupon scanning process might be another factor in this deal not working for many. The coupon is scanned prior to the item being purchased. When I got Astro Boy the coupon was scanned after the game. Don't give up on the coupon until you have tried this.

I agree--it was probably just a freak incident; this deal has been somewhat finicky since the beginning just because of the nature of it (ie, free games). And I especially agree that some people need to back off... walking out with five or six free games at a time is only going to draw attention and get this thing shut down.
I've personally seen no evidence that this deal has changed in the slightest :)

I used a coupon last night to get Astro Boy for free last night. I also grabbed a $5 NCAA Football 2005 for the Cube and some DVDs I wanted. The guy at the register scanned the coupon first then everything else and I was on my way, no hassles. Thats the important part and may save a bunch of headache, have the cashier scan the coupon FIRST, then all the other games, DVDs, etc, the register will do the rest.

Thankfully, most of the games that are either free or $5 AC don't have massive trade-in value, save Astro Boy and March Madness 2005, the folks that want tons of trade-in credit aren't jumping on this coupon, which is probably why it's still alive.
XIII, which was free AC, trades in for $7.50 at FYE. Hunter: The Reckoning - Wayward, which was $4.99 AC, also trades in for $7.50 @ FYE. Not worth a lot of hassle, as FYE isn't next door to me and like 15 minutes from my place.

Massive trade-in credit would be the $20 for March Madness 2005 or $18 for Astro Boy.
$7.50 from a $5 game wouldn't be what I call "massive". $7.50 from a free game isn't "massive", though it's pure credit profit.

I went to Best Buy to use a $5 off coupon for the first time today. The short is: they honored the coupon, but it was a slight hassle.
I was using one of the coupon from the 6-coupon sheet. I picked up 3 GGCs (to put $5 on each), Donkey Kong 3 e-Reader card ($0.99), and Champions of Norrath ($15). I went up to the register, told the woman that I wanted to put $5 on each gift card, which she did. I then said "And I'm getting these games and have a coupon for this one" and showed her the coupon.
She scanned the coupon and then the two games, and then stared at the register screen because the coupon was coming up as $0.00 and no discount was being taken from the game. She took the coupon and read it carefully. Seeing nothing wrong with it, she re-wrung up everything, this time doing the coupon before the GGCs. The coupon still came up as $0 with no discount for the game. She read the coupon carefully again and, seeing no reason why it shouldn't work, she went to talk to her manager.
She came back and said the manager told her to just manually take $5 off the game. She did this, realized she needed a password, and went to get her manager again. The manager came over, etnered the password, and then she finally finished ringing me up, but had to use a special receipt form because of the manual $5 off.
So, I eventually got my Champions of Norrath for $10, but it wasn't easy.

Well, after my little incident yesterday afternoon, I wasn't too sure what to expect from a different BB today. Went in and found a $5 game along with a penny guide. Took them up to the register and she rang it up just fine, no problems, no comments. So rather than a nation/region/citywide problem, it's most likely just one or two BB getting really abused and seeing all sorts of different sizes of the same coupon. So all is good... for now.
On a similar note, perhaps it would be a good idea to try and coordinate things so that everyone who goes to a particular best buy should use the same size coupon. Might be kinda hard to coordinate this but if it could be done, it might prevent some if these hassles.

Has anyone had a problem where they wouldn't take it because it says, "no copies"? It seems like that would be the most likely thing to come up if they don't want to take it.
Also, I noticed some people said they were picking up multiple games. Did you make more than one trip? Or did they actually take several coupons at once?

I've got a stack of about 30 of these coupons, and I didn't print a single one. I got them from my local Best Buy. They had stacks for the taking on the PSP launch and for several weeks thereafter. Each coupon takes up the entire page. It's a copy, sure, but Best Buy copied them and gave them out -- that's what I tell every cashier who seemed like they might question the coupon and I've never been denied using it (well, I have been denied using more than one per transaction, but not denied flat out). It's possible that some Best Buys printed them out in a different size, but to seem legit in Springfield, MO, at least, I'd say to print them out page size.
Which I don't.

I think those are FYE prices, not GameRush (edit - I see from the VG ad thread that you have FYE credit so you are probably well aware those are FYE prices :) - you have the best place to trade games in - I have never been able to trade at any FYE's I've tried out - sure their new game prices suck, but it is hard to beat those FYE trade-in values). The credit at GR isn't "massive" but it is nice. I've heard Astro Boy gets $8. March Madness 2005 for PS2 and NCAA Football 2005 for GC get $12.50. I looked at 8 Best Buy's in the DC area and a few in Portland and didn't find ANY Astro Boy or March Madness (the latter I wanted actually to play!). The best I did on a free game at GR was $1.50 for Tomb Raider (+ the coupon for a free package of Red Baron frozen pizza slices which my wife picked up today). Besides Astro Boy and March Madness all the other "free" Best Buy games get you $1.50 at GR, so you aren't missing much by not having one Shrike. A note to anyone that doesn't know this - you can also trade in at most regular Blockbusters and get the same prices ($8 for Astro Boy, $12.50 for March Madness, etc).
The $10 games (which you get for $5 after coupon) are far worse - the best is Midway Arcade Treasures 1 which gets $7 at GR. BG&E gets $5, and most of the rest are $1.50-$3. They are only worth using if you are doing the preorder for $30 deal, or the trade 3 get any used for $5 deal, both of which end on the 20th.

Almost exactly the same thing happened to me when I went to pick up Star Ocean today, including calling the Manager back over twice and everything. The funny thing is that I also picked up Beyond Good and Evil at the same time: We made 2 separate transactions with 2 separate coupons (they said only 1 coupon per transaction - whatever), and BGaE rang up as 9.99 and the coupon took it down to 4.99. Worked perfectly. Then Star Ocean gave the cashier problems. Maybe it's because it's on sale and we're not supposed to be able to use this coupon on on-sale games? Who knows. In any case, I got them both for 15 total, as I hoped to.

Yes, I should've clarified that in my post, so my apologies for that, it was FYE that the credit for Astro Boy & March Madness were so high.
I'm only planning to pick up right out of the gate stuff from FYE, so that way, when it's $50 everywhere, it'll be worth blowing out $50 credit for a new title. GTA:SA would've been one, had I not managed to get it for about $21 @ BB between a slightly wonky PM and a $5 RZ cert.

Listed on DDD as CASE CLOSED-STARTER SET (LTO)(UC)) and Gatchaman collection 1, the latter of which qualified me to get a $5 gc with purchase. Then, I used the $5 gc, plus the PS2/PSP coupon to knock down the price of GitS:SAC (PS2) to $10.
The sticker price of the Case Closed set was $15.99, and the Gatchaman set was $22.99, so even after tax I saved a few bucks off of DDD's sale prices.

Umm...no wrong attitude dude. Stuff comes in stock and stuff goes out of stock like any other sale. Just depends on when you come in for it. Not their fault on this one (though I'd love it if it were BB's fault all the time).

Not getting free games isn't a rip. Charging $30 for a GH or something would be. I know you're disppointed, but you're thinking about it wrong.

Hey guessed.
How did you get a 5$ gift card from gatchaman collection? was it a combo with case closed or something? I looked all thru the insider mag they have, and didnt see anything for it. I been eyeing that gatchaman set everytime I go in, waiting for a reward certificate to show up, good purchase to begin with at 22.99.........but wouldnt mind getting it witha 5$ GC. I am also tempted by the DDD deal, its something like 18 after the 20%........
they should really put anime at best buy in three categories....1)normal priced, and 2) grossly overpriced, and 3) WTF? you got to be kidding me, nobody would be dumb enough to pay that much.............

There was a shelf tag that stated the gift card deal. I don't know the valid dates, yesterday may very well have been the last day. The only requirement was buying Gatchaman collection 1, nothing else. When I told the cashier about the shelf tag, she just grabbed a gc, put $5 on it, and deducted $5 from the price of the set (since the computer charged for the gc). If the deal is over, then buying from DDD would be better, of course.
And you left of a category from BB: loss leader/misprice. I've gotten a few insane anime deals there (I still wish the Hellsing set had panned out).

I dont know how I missed that deal, as I had looked it up online last week, and been in numerous BB stores. No shelf tag at any of mine that I saw.......Ah well, saves me just five bucks and thats the same basic price on DDD right now (just have to wait til they get more stock though) I'll keep my eye out just in case though.
I just went up there and didnt see anything on the gift cards, but DID fiind a stack of GGC with the 19.99 coupon (not the crappy 29.99 one) (gonna go back for a few I think) and saw the movie ones with the two dollar coupons for movies. (worth it i think only if you already got over 14.99 in movies in your hand ready to go)(is it a minimum of 2 totalling 14.99?) or could you use it on say just case closed boxed set for 15.99?)
(after looking at the box, it looks like a decent deal for the starter set.
Well, trip entirely wasnt wasted...prince of persia warrior within, just dropped from 39.95 to 29.95 so dropped another full pager coupon to get it for 24.99, and then a reward coupon brought it to 20.00 plus tax. When I brought the stuff up, I put down two games (never try a free game on its own, YMWS (your mileage will suck, and alarms go off JK) PoPWW and madden 2004 (4.99 tag called out to me as I walked by, had to grab it.) an put them down, before i had a chance to get my reward zone card out, and ask if I needed to do sepearately because of two coupons, one pager for each.......she said nope, scanned both, hit the look for deals button, and told me twenty plus tax......I was prepared for a no, just take the cheap one, and come right back through different line if need be, but it all went smooth.
Might have been instore only the gatchaman card thing......too bad, didnt want to wait on it, but DDD will hook me up I think.
Thanks

Only problem with that logic is FYE marks up items at least $5-15 over most other stores (particularly dvds) and their game prices take a long time to drop ... so i only trade in to fye if i can get something that's on sale/rebate where the price is identical or cheaper then what i would pay at a local competitor.

What exactly happens when BB blacklists you as a "devil customer?"
Whenever i use these $5 coupons (particularly whenever I get a "free" game), I usually try to buy something along with it and use cash, so it's harder for them to track my CAG purchases.
YoshiFan1

I don't think anything happens. Unless something has changed, Best Buy doesn't have a list of devil customers like Staples has a blacklist, it's just Best Buy took the whole term devil customer to apply to people who come in the store and only buy loss leaders, fill out mail in rebates, do too many returns etc.

I've never really had any troubles with people at Best Buy; they're usually just shocked to see the price that I get. I doubt they'd bother to kick you out unless you caused a disruption, so if a cashier tells you that you can't get a game for free, just walk away quietly and come back to another cashier in a few minutes.
Not exactly an answer, I know, but preventing black-enlistment is better than dealing with it.

Just a suggestion.
Whoever is editing the master list at the beginning of this topic should add a date to the list of cheap games that would indicate when games dropped to that price. That would make it easier to see if any games have been recently lowered in price.
Thanks.

I'd go ahead and do it--the PriceGrabber 'reviews' only need to be a sentence or two (30 word minimum) so you can just copy your highlight sentences and paste them over...
