View Full Version : New campaign WWJSD?

After reading yet another article in which I knew something shady was going on from the subject line I decided there is entirely too much stupidity going on on these boards. Sure enough it was for a scam of a free year for XBox Live (see http://cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12509&highlight=live+free for further details).
Now whatever people want to scam is their own business but when you stupidly post it on these boards your just asking for a flaming by JSweeny(and just about everyone else). Now there's a simple solution on the horizon, when you get yourself a scam like this simply think to yourself, What Would JSweeney Do?(or just WWJSD?) Its not difficult, just think it over before you hit that submit button and subject us all to 50+ pages of flaming/arguing/ranting that really do nothing more than annoy us and submit CheapyD to possible negative repercussions (I can't believe I'm finally adopting this viewpoint but it is true). Simply enough don't post deals unless their legit.
Edit- Reworded original post to sound less anti-inflamatory and anti-JSweeney. Thanks for the input Whipsmartbanky and CaseyRybak.

its not that he really cares what you do IMO its that you post it like you are proud of your actions.
if you do something sketchy, keep your mouth shut

Are you saying I'm a jackass? I'm serious, I'm completely tired of people posting these stupid scams and being so proud of it when they know damn well that they are just trying to piss everyone off. I was on the other side of the issue to a certain extent at one point but now its just gone too far.

well, that guy who scammed Microsoft was from PIttsbburgh, so that sort of goes hand in hand with being shady.

It sounds like you're taking a swipe at Sweeney. If you're not, then you're not a jackass, are you? If you are...

I agree. If you are trying to defend his posts you may want to reword your post to make it sound less sarcastic

No not my intention at all actually. I will admit at times I have taken shots at him but this is 100% in support of him. A lot of the times he's right, its just taken me a little more time to get fed up with all these scams like he has.
The only reason I used him in my posting is because by far he is the most vocal of all of us when it comes to posting scams.

It may be kind of corny, but I'm sure others here have pride in being a cheapass gamer. We're not all perfect, but it ruins our reputation when a few encourage some form of stealing or scamming.
Not only that, but if an affiliate store were to catch wind of dealings that rip them off, the community as a whole will miss out on deals. In a way J is doing us all a favor by keeping the kiddies in line, so we won't have to.

After seeing the edits that were done to the orginal post, I see that the tone of the original post was not what RedvsBlue intented. Since that wasn't what he actually meant, the post that this replaces is no longer salient or germane to the topic.

This is exactly how I feel now. Sometimes there can be debate between a scam and a deal but the XBox live thing can in no way be considered just a deal, its a scam plain and simple.

Hell, since you're all dead set on crucifying me anyway, you should all probably go get yourself a cross, some spikes, and a crown of thorns while your at it.
I'm sorry that you feel that my posting is insincere. I guess if this isn't enough to convince you that I understand your point of view then I'm not sure how you want me to. All I can say is that you'll just have to wait and see what my future actions hold.

Shady deal posters and defenders,
It is clear by your insistance on defending shady deals that you are an ass who doesn't care about this site and wants people to post outright scams and thefts so you can get your grubby little hands on them.
People who post shady deals and/or scams will always get told not to post them, and probably flamed as well.
How hard is it for your little mind to understand that posting shady deals and scams will hurt this site's reputation and ruin everything for us and Cheapy?
No one is telling you not to engage in your crooked ways, we are just telling you not to engage in your crooked ways here on this site. Do you understand?

Did you read any of my postings on this thread before responding? I'm basically announcing that I support JSweeney now. I haven't defended very many shady deals in the past and now I will not at all in the future.
Also thank you Whipsmart for recognizing that I am genuine and sincere in my intentions.

The hell?? I didn't see him supporting shady deals in his post. If anything he seemed to be agreeing with JSweeny and the like by saying that posting the scams is ridiculous and stupid.

I guess what I find most amazing about people who post scams to the boards are that they're totally surprised when they're criticized for it. It's as if they're all following a specific guideline for how to post a fraudelent deal.
1: Find a deal which involves misrepresentation, returning merchandise to a different store than you purchased it from, or theft.
2: Make a post to the forums, proudly proclaiming the fact that you found a great loophole in the system.
3: Wait for replies
4: Act completely surprised at the response, and respond to the replies in one of the following ways
A) Characterize the company that you defrauded as deserving of the loss.
B) Claim that you can't get caught for the crime.
C) Personally attack the people that criticized you (Name calling works well).
D) Complain that people are wasting their time by replying.
E) Rationalize that it's not really a crime.
5: Repeat steps 3 and 4
Does that about cover it? Is there a reason why this is the prefered tactic, given that it's not really effective?

I know, this is exactly what I'm saying. I can understand how some people might think the deal is subject to interpretations but some of them are blatently scams. That's pretty much why I'm fed up of even the deals that are slightly shady. I just say if there's even a doubt as to the legitemacy of a deal then just save it and don't post it.

After coming back to the thread this morning, and rereading RedvsBlue's edited comment, I see that I overreacted. I posted after only having read his original post (before the edit), and the first few of the posts that Casey and Banky had made.
Judging by the argument that I had had with RedvsBlue in another thread on the same topic, I figured that was indeed sarcastic in nature, and intended to make me a pariah like many of the people in the other threads had done. Seeing the edits that have been done and the tone the thread has taken on, I can see more clearly that RedvsBlue was actually sincere in what he said.
I have to appologize for my overreaction. It's just that when I first saw the post it was just yet another post trying to berate me for trying to stand up for what is right, and constantly having to defend myself in threads where people were lashing out because I called thier "deals" scams was getting tiring. It just happend that the original wording and tone of this thread struck me as yet another derisive comment at my expense, so I ended up over reacting. Sorry about that. My bad.

No harm, no foul. I reread the original post and I could see how my intentions could be misconstrued so that's why I went back and reworded it a bit. Basically I am completely fed up with people who knowingly post a thread that is some kind of a scam. Granted there are some that are questionable but now I've kind of adopted a zero tolerence, if its even remotely in question just don't post it.

you forgot "deny that you did it" and say it was just an idea
remember the 'sears tool return' guy or how about yesterdays 'free live with a phone call' guy.....both gave explicit detail as to how they did it, then after being criticized said 'oh, i didnt do this, i was just thinking how great of an idea it would be'....idiots
