Kick ass game too.

Super Mario RPG. I didn't care for it much back then, but I didn't get my taste for RPG's for awhile afterwards.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Actually, it's nowhere near as bad as most people seem to think, especially considering it's designed to be an entry level RPG.

Cystalis for NES, awesome game.
Phantasy Star I... when I was like 5 years old.
I had no idea what I was doing... and wandered about for probably 5 years killing swarms and got Alis to some ungodly level. But, even then, I knew that game was WAY better than the other Master System games I had.
Then, one day, when I was like 15, I popped the game back in again... and FINALLY found out how to move on with the game.
Even today, I still play it sometimes... it was a game far ahead of its era.

Heh, mine is an interesting story! I had Super mario 3 for my NES as a wee lad (we're talkin' maybe 5 or 6 here...). I had a subscription to Nintendo Power way back then and I sent off for the guide.
They mistakenly sent me a guide to Final Fantasy. I was absolutely FASCINATED by all the monster art, with the damned EVILEYE practically giving me nightmares. The class change system seemed really cool to me also. I'd trace all the art out of that guide...
Of course, my dad absolutely hated (still does, but I'm in college) that I played video games, so I never had the chance to aquire any more games than I already had, FF1 included. The first chance I had to actually PLAY an RPG was when my friend got his SNES and we rented Mystic Quest.
We stayed up all night playing that game, and I loved it. Must've been about 8. Later that year my mom pulled some strings (they're divorced now, heehee) and got me an SNES for christmas. Around that February I saw FF2 for $20 bucks at my local used book store. I picked it up, and played the shiat out of it. I've been an RPG player ever since.
Though I've traded in/sold most of my games through the years, I still have that copy of FF2. It's probably the only one of my games that really holds any sentimental value.

Secret of Mana for SNES, didnt really know how to play it but I did anyways. The first RPG I played and understood was Secret of Mana 2 import on a r*m (think computer) It was a fully translated version and I loved that game to death.

Cystalis for NES, awesome game.
Cystalis? What is that, some kind of game about cancer?
But seriously, Dragon Warrior free with subscription to Nintendo Power.
SPOILER**************
If you get to the end of Dragon Warrior, and the guy asks you if you want to let him live and split the wealth, SAY NO!

i didnt get a chance to play this until the gba collection was released and all i can say was it blew me away, and this was 2 years ago...the final tower is a major hassle though.
my first rpg was dragon warrior, but i got it for my 6th birthday, i had no comprehension of what in the world to do, so at the time i didnt like it much. the first rpg i really played and comprehendedwas super mario rpg. i was 12 or 13? after that i moved quickly on to chrono trigger, ff3, suikoden, wild arms, and ff7, and ive been hooked ever since.

Dragon Warrior I was my first, followed by Final Fantasy I (didn't really like it all that much). Funny thing is, I couldn't even find DW II, III, and especially IV when they freaking came out! I enjoyed DW I so much that I really wanted the others ones, so I begged for the damn things for Xmas and birthdays with no luck.
Also, I kinda think Oregon Trail kinda counts, but that's just me

The first one I ever played was Dragon Warrior I, but my cousin owned the NES and we were too young with too much energy to sit down and read.
I used to watch my neighbors play FFII all the time and that's how I got hooked.
The first one I ever owned was FFIII, and is still my favorite RPG of all times. Great story, engrossing musical score, and fascinating characters.
Shadow lovin' all the way!

Rogue on a terminal connected to an HP3000 minicomputer system in 1978. No graphics, everything depicted by text. You were an upper case letter H, for Hero. A bat would be a b, while a big bat would be a B.

I played some of the Bard's Tale games on the C=64, but I suppose they were more adventure games. I also played some of the text-based Zork games. I played Rogue as well, but never played it online in a MUD. As far as consoles go, Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System was the first, then Dragon Warriror for NES, and then Miracle Warriors for SMS.

First was Super Mario RPG, on my brother's SNES. I remember having to help him with some of the puzzle-y things (forgive me if I get the names wrong, it's been awhile):
"Hey, some guy gave me this Cricket Pie thing, and I can't figure out what I'm supposed to do with it."
"Umm... did you try taking it to Frogfucius?"
"...DUDE! I never thought of that!"

If Zelda counts then that... oddly enough I'd consider my first REAL RPG experience to be Skies of Arcadia for the DC.
I remember I got the demo for in in the ODC magazine and played the crap out of it... like 3 or 4 times over. It still holds a very very dear place in my heart.
Vyse, Aika, and Fina... will you ever get the sequel you deserve?!?!?

i believe my first rpg was Final Fantasy I, i still have it in my closet. it was so cool though. you get a ship and ride around really fast in it, and you are able to kill the enemies even though there are 2 pipes in your way.

Glad that I'm not the only one who played Zork. That game changed my life at age 6. My mom was amazed I could understand the damn thing, let alone play it. lol. I remember going to my friend Carl's house and playing Rouge and was just amazed by it, but then I got sick of the whole MUD thing for some reason when I was bout 11 or so. I think that was about the time my buddy Casey got his Super Famicon in like a week after release. That kid got everything early cause his dad had an office in Japan. I remember reading Nintendo Power in his room, reading about the SNES, and asking Casey "Hey, you know this isn't out here for another 8 months?" Ahh, nostalgia.
Thank you Casey, where ever you are, and thank your dad too, for getting me into the import game scene. ^_^
Side Note: I got online the first time at Carl's house. Black screen with Orange letters. Carl's dad worked with the Military for years and had I guess what we call the net today. All text based, Unix I believe, but damn was it fun.
God I feel old.

Dragon Warrior, then Ultima Exodus and Final fantasy 1, I think. The exact order escapes me. All on the NES.
Edit: Zelda before those, of course, but I'm not counting that as a true RPG. Also not counting numerous PC games before those...

Adventure/RPG? Zelda
Turn based? Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
PC? I can't remember. I used to play text based games by Keypunch Software but I'll be damned if I can remember the names of them. I know I still have those big ass 5 1/4 inch floppies somewhere....

My first RPG was the free copy of Dragon Warrior from Nintendo Power. I remember somehow beating it back in the day. However, the first RPG that got me really hooked on RPGs was Final Fantasy II (IV). It was the first game I bought for the SNES and the only RPG I've beaten multiple times. I'm looking forward to playing through the FF Chronicles version with the improved translation. I'll miss having classic lines like this though:

I sure hope so. Skies of Arcadia is one of my favorite games of all time. Its cheeriness was refreshing after playing Final Fantasy VII.
Skies of Arcadia... as my avatar should tell you, my favoritest game ever.
But, not because of the "good guys". They were all boring, except Aika.
I heart all the Armada.
Lord Alfonso - Dispose of them! I want babies with him.
Lord De Loco - Hearts.
And, of course, Belleza... who I'm eerily similar to. Except for the ending. I cried when that happened.

Now Ramirez was a badass... but I HATED Alfonso (in a good way of course). His character was perfectly crafted to be a slimey bastard. You gotta love the Capt. though... that guy was awesome. I want a sequel only so that I can see Fina in the pirate costume she had on in the last cutscene. Damn Sega and their taunting me!

I think my first one was Dragon Warrior, but at the time I didn't exactly know what an RPG was, nor did I play many others before the SNES hit.
Progression went something like this:
1 - Dragon Warrior (NES)
2 - Faxanadu (NES)
3 - Wanderers From Y's (SNES)
4 - Lagoon (SNES)
5 - FF 2 (SNES)
Around the time I picked up FF2, a friend clued me in to the whole "RPG" genre idea. Not that knowing what genre a game is really adds or detracts from the gameplay experience.

probably Final Fantasy. I thought the grown up characters(after you find the rats tail) were the coolest things in the the world. they all looked like they had shades on and had spiky hair.
