This is pretty intresting. Wireless lan out of the box as well as developer support. Not sure what to think about the controllers. Hopefully Nintendo is dusting off the cobwebs now. Should be intresting. GO NINTENDO GO!!!

Hopefully, Nintendo themselves will have something to say about this at E3 in mid-May.

Wow. It looks like Nintendo is finally starting to pull their heads out of the sand. I'm glad to see their doing what it takes to make it friendlier for Third Parties.

"may satisfy the hardcore gamers, but they've become too difficult for more casual gamers."

That's the only thing that scares me, being a hardcore gamer and all.

But, I have faith in Nintendo. I hope they can get back on top...

I assume the other consoles are going to be wi-fi capable too, but I haven't heard anything about it yet. Anyone know? At the very least it is a big step forward for Nintendo.

New on the controller is EXTREMELY depressing.

Itawa-san did not discuss recent rumours of a DS-style touch screen controller, but did say that controllers for current consoles "may satisfy the hardcore gamers, but they've become too difficult for more casual gamers."

"For the next-generation console, we plan to introduce a friendly user interface so that, for example, a mother who's watching her child playing a game might say, 'Oh, I'd like to try that too,'" he said.

What the hell? Current controllers are too complicated? I know that Nintendo wants to go for casual gamers more than hardcores but they are really gonna shoot themselves in the foot if they "simplify" to the point that the controller is a one button affair.

I agree on the controller issue but then again with the Gamecube backwards compatibility the wavebird may still be a choice. That would be great for me as I find it to be the most comfortable and playable (for me) this generation.

you people are stupid on the controller thing. the SNES controller is the best ever and every controller after that has been screwing everything up.

games don't need 70 L and R buttons.

in the report on gamespot yesterday, the big N president was talking about how long the revolution would last, and he said 3 - 5 years...3 years is a short amount of time, are they expecting it to fail? They have been dissing microsoft for jumping out of the gate so earlier on next gen system, due to the lack of success they had this time...isn't msft system 4 years later..

Odd, I've heard at least several dozen PS2 fanboys say the exact same thing about the Dual Shock 2 over the past couple of years. Everyone's got an opinion though. . .

That is the lifespan of successful consoles in recent years, at least in term of being the company's lead platform. The PSone is still being sold but the period when it ruled the world wasn't much more than five years. During that period the rate of advancement in semiconductor technology, as illustrated by the PC, advanced at a much greater pace than previously.

So long as a competitor has the option to concede loss for their current system by preparing a new platform with the latest technology that can be delivered for the price point, none of the others competing in that range can afford to ignore it for long. Imagine how much more entrenched the Dreamcast would have been if Sony had not gon on a PR campaign to hype the PS2 long in advance of its real world demonstration and eventual release.

So long as companies have the capital any one of them can up the ante on hardwware capability.

I'd say Sony is a pretty safe bet as well since they also have a 802.11b equipped portable to crosspromote. Microsoft will unquestionably have at least an Ethernet port but they may make wireless an option to keep costs under control. Wireless client hardware has gotten very inexpensive but you still have to weigh the advantages and disadvantages before making the design commitment.
