Okay...I've found a cartoon on Newgrounds that I want to show to some of my friends when I get back to school next week.

This one. (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/159024)

Problem is, Newgrounds is completely blocked off at school. I can, however, bring in the flash file and play it there. The problem there is that I can't find it to download. Is it possible to download the .SWF file and save it to my hard drive? I've tried everything that's come to my mind - digging through the source and so on - and nothing's worked.

Two questions, then...is it possible, and how do you do it if it is?

I just typed saving flash on Google and found a bunch of programs. Maybe one of them will work.

Can't you just go into your cache and save it from there?

I tried that...and I couldn't find it anywhere. It should've been in there, but I didn't see it.

In any case, the URL in the second post worked perfectly. Thanks. :D

i figured it out.

go here (http://download.com.com/3000-6676-10146287.html?tag=lst-0-6) and download the player. then, go to the movie and let it fully load. go to your temp internet files, and find any .swf files. the one with the 6 digit or so number is the flash movie. move that to desktop, and open with the program. instant flash.

Where are the temp internet files?

go to contol panel, then internet options, then in the middle of the window is a button that says settings. click it, and on the next window click view files. sort by type, then just find the .swf files.

If you use IE, you can forgo the control panel and just right click the blue E on your desktop (if you have it enabled to be there) and select properties. Same thing, just a tad quicker.

also, if you're using IE, just go to "Tools" in the toolbar on top, and go down to "Internet Options"

I'm still confused. What is the file ending of the flash movie in the temp files folder? I don't see any .swf's.

change the view to details, then sort by type. it usually is right above or below the cookies.

EDIT: Me bad, it doesnt say .swf, when set to details view, it will say shockwave type.

You can also usually find the URL directly from the page's source code. I haven't looked at this particular page, but if you choose view source, just search in the code for .swf or something like that, and the URL is usually hidden in there somewhere.

I'm guessing that that's how jmcc found the link.

M'yes. Quite. Open the link's pop-up window>view page source>ctrl+f>type ".swf" in the search box>enter>copy and paste the found link into your address bar.

Okay then, it's official...I'm just stupid. I tried that, but wasn't able to put two and two together to get the URL you gave me (which doesn't actually seem to be anywhere in the source. Still...)

Thanks for the help. :D

I'm really gettin' frustrated with this. How do you get it to your desktop? It's under temporary internet files? I'm using Avant Browser, but think it's drasticly different from IE.

That's just a add-on to IE, though, AFAIK. Are you using WindowsXP? If so the place the file will be listed once you view it in IE (it was for me anyway) is

C:\Documents and Settings\your user ID\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Then just click on the "type" sorting tab and pagedown until you get to the .swf files. It shouldn't be too hard to pick out the file, since it's pretty big.

you can get around your schools filter by using a proxy browser that will display the url for you

Those wont work all the time. My school closes down any site that has "Game" in the title at the top. You can get around that though. They also can flat out not allow packets from certain sites though. Its impossible to get to Newgrounds at my school. I've tried everything and its a no go.

there's a much easier way to do this people...just download this little program:

http://www.colorpilot.com/extract.html

it's under 600 kb and it does all the sifting through your cache for you...after you've loaded a flash file for the first time just run this program afterwards and you can save it to anywhere on your hardrive for later transport to say, a jumpdrive or cd...

Censorware (http://www.lightspawn.org/articles/36.html) is such a lovely thing, isn't it?
